2 2 Calendar The calendar listings are an attempt to keep you up to date on upcoming PRW events, as well as other events of particular interest to woodturners. Next PRW meeting will be on January 3, 2012 Norm Desjardins will give a talk and discussion on photographing your work. February meeting will feature Shop Safety Cultural Center ).Donations for the Cultural Center are needed. These donations of turned items are sold in the CCCC Gift shop to offset the cost of our rent for the meeting room. PRW members donated a total retail value of $1,600 in The 2012 total will be available next month. This helps to keep our annual rent in the $660 range for the use of the room in our monthly meetings. Every member should try to donate several items throughout the year...no matter how large or small, each item will make a difference. THANKS Dues Florida Annual Woodturning Symposium The Florida Woodturning Symposium will be coming up this February 1-3, 2013 in Lake Yale Florida. Registrations are now being accepted. New Member A big welcome goes out to new PRW member Don Luttrell. At the January meeting please introduce yourself to Don and make him feel welcome. If you have digital photo s that you would like to have considered for use in the newsletter, please send them to the editor at: Club dues are due by December 31. If you haven t paid them, please bring them to the January 3rd meeting. If you can t make the meeting, please mail them to George Hutton our newly elected treasurer. Tool Exchange Brendan Imes Tree Service will be cutting down NIP and Ficus in the next week. Call to let him know if you are interested in obtaining some of this wood. Also fresh cut Cypress is available.call Bob Brunner for more information. Meetings: Are held from 6:30-9:30 p.m. on the first Thursday of the month at the Charlotte County Cultural Center, Rm Aaron St. Port Charlotte, Fl NEXT MEETING January 3, 2012 A Tool/Supply exchange/sale will be held starting as a part of the January meeting. All members are invited to bring any tools or tool/workshop related items they would like to sell. Please make sure ALL items are tagged clearly with a price and owners name. Any items that do not sell must be removed from the Cultural Center that night. The club does not have room to store items. 2

9 9 From the Prez From the Board and myself, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and Best Wishes for a Healthy, Happy and Prosperous New Year. The Christmas party for 2012 is now history but memories of a great time linger on. Thirty two members, spouses and significant others enjoyed an evening of good food and great fellowship at Twin Isles Country Club in Punta Gorda. As usual the Chinese Auction of member turnings was a big success as there were very handsome pieces brought in and exchanged and sometime exchanged and exchanged again. You can mark your calendars now for next year s party on Thursday, December 12, is now in the books and it seems to the writer it was a very successful year. We had two professional turners in for multiday demonstrations, we finally accomplished acquiring a substantial lathe for use both in club demonstrations and also for visiting professionals, we had a very enjoyable, though a bit chilly, picnic at Bayshore Park in Port Charlotte, we acquired and placed two exhibition cases to accommodate our members showing off their works to the public, we sponsored a series of classes for five or six aspiring wood turners, we again participated in two community events, Hands Across America and ArtSensation. In addition to those activities we had a full agenda of monthly club demonstrations and a couple of Home Shop demonstrations, made a few Wood Runs and most important of all added a few members. At the end of the day in spite of some substantial expenditures we ended up in the black. The disappointment of the year was being rejected for the AAW Grant which we very much needed to complete our audio visual components. For 2013 we plan to again have a couple of multiday workshops but the BIG event will be the AAW National Symposium slated for Tampa, June 27 to 30. Hopefully all of our members will get to spend at least one day at the show as the various demonstrations are incomparable, a valuable learning experience and enjoyable, to boot! At this writing we do not see any major purchases on the horizon so 2013 should be a year of accumulation in terms of funding. And, of course, we will continue to do the normal events club and home demos, teaching opportunities, a spring picnic, etc., etc. Have a Great Holiday Season and Keep on Turning, Jim P.S. Be Sure to attend the January 3, 2013 meeting as we have a surprise awaiting you that you just plain don t want to miss out on. Normand s demonstration on photographing your work will be a thing of splendor, I am sure, but that s not the real treat. Be sure to be there for the Grand Unveiling!! 9
