M I C R O S O F T Central Coast Woodturners. A U G U S T Chapter Officers Bill Kandler Pres. bkandler@verisof.com Gordon Rowland V Pres and Programs rowlago@att.net Terry Cohen Treasurer ctcohen59@gmail.com Don Barr Librarian donald-barr@att.net President Bill Kandler called the monthly meeting to order at the scheduled time at 9:00AM. Introduced were two guests, Don Finley of Las Vegas and Mike Frost of Morro Bay. More on these gents later in newsletter. George Paes was asked to report on the past AAW Symposium held in Hartford, CT. Reported that the symposium was very informative and well run and that it\ showed a lot of cooperation between AAW and the Hartford Convention Bureau. George Paes Editor gngpaes@sbcglobal.net A brief meeting was held between George, Al Geller and Jim Rinde of Channel Islands and with Bill Clark of Bakersfield which formed a possible link set up from which these people will contact the others in the event a Pro turner will be in the area and arrange for multiple demos with the least amount of traveling and possibly a saving in expenses. Other California chapters will be contacted to seek their involvement. Discussion was held on the troubling topic of the unrest in AAW with the firing of Mary Lacer. It is suggested that if interested, members should read up on the forums being sent to the AAW web site. Treasurer Terry Cohen reported that our treasury is in good condition and that more demo s will be affordable. He also reminded the group that our regular picnic will be on Sunday October3rd in the Pine section of the Nipomo Community Park and the Holiday luncheon will be on Sunday, December 12th at Steamers in Pismo Beach. Both affairs will be starting at Noon. More on these in weeks to
Notices Continued The CCW will be at the August 1st version of ARROYO GRANDE Concert in the park. We ll be represented by Bill Kandler, Bill Peterson and George Paes and if anyone wishes to join us, please do, Our club lathe will set up for turning demos. Look for us under the White Canopy. Challenge project is twofold, 1st it s a pen or pencil holder and second it should NOT be finished and it is to be swapped with another s turners unfinished holder, Attention: It should show some design, not just a block of wood with a hole in it. Gordon Rowland introduced the suggestion that CCW members compile a list of shop hints that they have created or learned from outside sources. Ken Ray Gave us a presentation on finishing with types of Lacquers. A product that he Likes is KEN AQUA which is a Water Based product. He went on to say that he would welcome anyone who seeks more info and would like to see a demo he can be contacted at Ken lives in Los Osos and can be located very easily. Challenge Project for July Spiral Turning Joe Mansfield started it off with his Spiral Candle holder made of Purple Heart and Mahogany. Sorry for the photo of Joe, he s really a good looking guy Terry Cohen showed his attempt, after a bit of adjustment he ended up with the Spiral
Spiral Continued Gerald Davis Showed his attempt at spiraling and said he had better luck cutting with a Chainsaw type of cutter, He also ended up with a piece much smaller than designed. Rick Haseman used his Legacy machine to achieve his spiral of Yellow Heart and Bloodwood. The final product at this time is unknown Show & Tell Terry Cohen presented a bowl turned from a recently cut Birch tree in his yard. Note: Some of the pieces will be used in demo at Arroyo Grande Concert on Aug 1st. Bill Winchell started this portion of the meeting with his Black Walnut Fruit Bowl that he made for his daughter in Washington. Also a bowl of segmented staves of Lyptus, Walnut, Maple andpurpleheart. Sorry, no space for other bowl.
Bill Kandler showed what he learned and turned under the teachings of Jimmy Clewes in Las Vegas. Several colors mixed in give the grain patterns of Ash lots of highlights. He also showed his (I Think he said) 1st Bark edge bowl of Cherry. Don Finley, Bob Gleason s brother in law entertained us with some of his magic. He started off with a strange Ball that he couldn t get to roll straight, he even showed a track on which a ball would roll down and continue on a straight line, Not his, matter of fact it got stuck at the top???? He was very proud to show a plate turned from a piece of HIGHLY quilted Maple. Ernie Miller two small (for animals) Urns turned from Black Acacia with screw in covers Gordon Rowland offered his piece as a Spiraled Finial tapered turned from Ebony. Sorry No Photo To wrap this up I want to thank Don Finley and Mike Frost for visiting us today. I wish that Don will visit The Gleason s more often and for Mike Frost, the brief chat at break time has some interest. We d like to see and learn about the Carbide tools that you employ, Do come back
How I made the Holey Dodecahedron 1: Gluing the two pieces of wood together. 2: Marked up Sphere Drilling the thing --- Everett T. Eiselen Everett, I apologize for not using all that you sent, must get back to computer school
