1 PBCW News Volume 8, Issue 7: July 2010 Minutes From The June Meeting Inside This Issue: Scholarships 2 Events Schedule 7 Gallery 2-6 AAW Challenge 7 Wordturnings 8 About 25 members and guests were present at Okeeheelee Nature Center for the June meeting of the PBCW. President Tim Rowe called the meeting to order shortly after 9AM. The first order of business was the demonstration by Carl Schneider. In anticipation of the July meeting challenge, Carl demonstrated turning a goblet. After the demonstration there was some discussion of the AAW symposium and some future events. Tim announced that there would be no board meeting after the regular meeting but that one would be held at a date to be announced before the next regular meeting. The 50/50 raffle drawing was won by Al Gruntwagin who generously donated his winnings to the club. The bring back raffle was won by Ed Taylor. Ed won a box turned by last month s winner John Buso. The meeting finished with the presentation of the gallery. Goblet Challenge At July Meeting Our July meeting will feature a Goblet Challenge. Members who bring a turned goblet to the meeting will receive a ticket for a prize drawing. Rules: Your goblet should have a cup and a stem. It must be at least partly made on the lathe. It should have been turned between May 22 and July 23, We ve had a demonstration and a lot of goblets were brought to the June meeting as examples. Now let s see what you ve got! THANKS FOR THE GALLERY I would like to thank the members who brought turnings to the June gallery. The response to the appeal in the June newsletter was tremendous. As you can see from this month s five pages of photos the gallery at the June meeting was the largest and most diverse we ve had in a long time. We had some outstanding pieces presented including, Tim Carter s Manzanita burl hollowform, Sig Schwartz Wild Tamarind/Ebonized Maple vessel and the boxes and bowls turned by Ed McDonnell and decorated both on his CNC router and later by hand with a burning pen. And then there were goblets of every description from seriously beautiful to just plain wacky. I received a lot of comments about there being too much to photograph. Believe me, there is never too much to shoot and it was a real pleasure to view and photograph all of your turnings. Please bring more this month. 7 Woodturning Scholarships Available Anyone interested in receiving financial assistance from the PBCW to attend a recognized woodturning course may apply for a grant in the amount of $250 or $500 to assist with expenses. To apply for a grant simply complete a grant application and give it to a member of the education committee. The education committee members are: Bill Jones, Brian Rosencrantz and Al Gruntwagin. In return for the aid the scholarship winner must agree to provide one or two demonstrations for the club at regular meetings during the year following attendance at the course. Eligibility for the scholarships will be judged by the club s education committee. AAW Chapter Challenge Entry The American Association of Woodturners will celebrate its 25-year anniversary in 2011 at the St. Paul symposium. One of the events there will be an exhibition, Turning 25 A Celebration. Each chapter is encouraged to enter this exhibit. The goal is for each chapter to enter a lathe-turned work that exemplifies and represents that chapter. The chapter can choose its own process for selecting a piece for the show, whether it is collaborative effort, or a chapter juried selection from members work. Entries for the show will be submitted online on the AAW website. Ground rules for each piece are: One piece per chapter Piece must fit in an 8 cube Weight limit is 3 pounds Entry fee is $40 Entry deadline is February 28, 2011 All entered work must be for sale All pieces must remain with the exhibit for any traveled venues after the symposium Sales will be shared 70% with the chapter/or artist and 30% with the AAW Sold work will be shipped to the buyer at the end of all exhibits, and unsold work will be returned to the chapter The entry fee will help defray the expense of a special display setup, return shipping to the buyer or the chapter, plus a very nice exhibit catalog for each participating chapter that will have a picture and description of each exhibit piece. The exhibit will be displayed in a prominent area at the symposium and each participating chapter will be clearly recognized for their contribution. With over 325 AAW chapters, this exhibition will be quite large, very unique, and a powerful display of the skills and talent in our chapters. It would be awesome to see all chapters represented. Any questions should be addressed to Bill Haskell or Warren Carpenter, Exhibitions Committee Co-Chairs. The club must decide how to choose an entry for the gallery. Should it be a collaboration or a competition? If a collaboration is chosen how should the design be selected? Should there be a collaboration competition? Be prepared to discuss these subjects at this month s meeting. 8 Wordturning I enjoy writing about woodturning almost as much as turning itself. I guess that s why I ve continued as editor of the PBCW newsletter as long as I have. (Maybe the fact that nobody else wants the job has something to do with it as well.) I appreciate the fact that the membership has continued to support my efforts. Though at times I m not sure anyone is reading, I am grateful for the feedback I get. I guess Carl must read every word because he never fails to let me know when I get a meeting date wrong, or send out last month s newsletter as the new one. So I ve decided to see how far I can push the idea with this new column I ve titled Wordturning. It s where I intend to publish my occasional literary wanderings. It won t be in every newsletter, I m not that prolific or egotistical. But there it is, you ve been warned. If you see the column titled Woordturning this is the kind of stuff you can expect to see. I ll try and keep it to the last page so it s easy to avoid. My Grandmother s Cherry Tree The Story Of an Intensely Personal Piece Of Woodturning I turned this piece for my father s 92nd birthday. My father gave me the last of the wood from the tree over twenty years ago. Unfortunately, by the time the tree was cut and sent to the mill, carpenter ants had destroyed most of the center of the tree. What was left was mostly cut into thin slabs. I ve kept that wood for years trying to decide what to do with it. I began writing the poem several years ago and it has seen several revisions before arriving at its present form. I finally decided that a platter be the best use for this piece of wood and a fitting home for the poem as well. I stopped the cracks in the cherry with butterflies made of walnut. (Also from one of my father s trees.) The lettering I transferred from a computer printout using carbon paper. I then traced over the letters with an archival quality fine line marker. I finished the piece with wipe on poly. The text of the poem is as follows: I don t remember my Grandmother, But I remember her Cherry tree. My Grandmother died when I was three. My Father came and woke my older brother and me. It was early in the morning when he told us. I did not understand. I remember because I d never seen my Father so sad. They tell me she was a pretty woman of elfin proportion, And pixyish demeanor. That she loved her garden, her flowers and her trees. That she loved to laugh. I imagine her beneath her Cherry tree in the Spring, Laughing as the pink petals fell, Cherry blossom snowflakes caught in her flowing hair. Later in the Summer baking pies, Filled with love and black sweet cherries. Rescued by her sons from greedy birds, Who thought the tree was theirs. She taught her sons to love the garden, The flowers and the trees. My father taught me too, And I remember climbing the rough black bark, Of my Grandmother s Cherry tree, To rescue the ripe black cherries for my Mother. The tree died too in its time, And was cut down when it became a danger, To the home where she raised her sons. But they saved a piece of the tree s wooden heart, In memory of their youth.
