The iris blooms were the size of a baby s head and the peonies as big as cabbages. Of course all the rain and warm weather was also a haven for lots of pollen and mold, so my allergies flared endlessly. Guess the clouds can have both a silver lining and a watering eye. Disregarding the unpleasant symptoms of allergies, I spent a lot of time walking around in the garden telling it how lovely it was. Wonder if speaking to your plants actually makes them healthier? We are coming to the close of our quilting year for At the June luncheon the new board will take over. It has been a glorious year. Lots of interesting programs, charity opportunities, learning classes, great food and best of all time spent with charming, talented and just generally lovely fellow quilters. I cannot express properly my gratitude to my board of officers. They made my tenure as president a very pleasant experience. They really made me look good! Seriously, everyone completed their tasks with efficiency, professionalism and best of all with a wonderful attitude of sharing their time and knowledge. It was a wonderful year and best of all I get to do it again. Besides the board members, so many of you worked hard at making the year a huge success. The chair heads continuously performed tirelessly and everyone helped and made everything work smoothly at the meetings, bees and outside activities. To all of you that did jobs that had names and to all who just worked

2 hard at setting up, taking down, cleaning up, cooking, etc. a huge hug and an endless thank you from your grateful president. The new board, with some returning members, will start our programs and activities in June. Already plans are in the works for programs, charity projects, quilt-in, a bus trip and much more. Our last program of the year was a great success. Thank you, Dianne and Jim for planning the Fashion Show event and thank you to all who took time to share their knowledge and experiences in other countries and nationalities. The more we learn about each other, the more we know ourselves. Knowledge can bind us together in very positive ways. I am looking forward to seeing everyone at the June Luncheon. Looking forward to another great year with MVQU. Fondly, Rickie Pedal to the Metal Quilt Tops Sewn in Less than an Hour! A fun time was had by all who participated in the Jelly Roll Race on May 29. Four teams competed to represent MVQU at the QU Show Jelly Roll Race on June 3. Team Dianne, with Libby and Sandra, were the winners, completing the race in 53 minutes. Team Ginny, with Inez and JoAn finished in 55 minutes, and Team Ro, with Mary D. and Carol finished in 57 minutes. One minute later, Team Zoe Ann, with Mary S. and Sonia finished their quilt top. Thanks to Susan and Jeanne for organizing, T for officiating, Mary D. for delicious scones, and members for cheering the teams. The quilt tops will be used for charity quilts. 3 June 12 Luncheon TGIS- THANK GOODNESS IT S SUMMER! This is the theme for the June luncheon this year. Please come and enjoy wonderful dishes prepared by our members along with ham provided by the chapter. For those who have signed up to help set-up, please arrive by 11:45pm. The feast will commence shortly after 12:30. See you all there. Joan Oelschlager, Featherweight Raffle Last chance to buy a raffle ticket to win the featherweight, generously donated by Blanche Ammon s husband. Drawing will be at the June luncheon. June Fat Quarter Giveaway! Blue! When you bring a fat quarter to the June luncheon you will be given a ticket. You can bring as many fat quarters as you would like, and you will be given a ticket for each fat quarter. There will be a drawing and the owner of the winning ticket will be given the fat quarters. For June, members are asked to bring a blue fabric. The winner will get to choose next month s color. Membership Renewal It s time to renew your membership for Memberships expire on June 30. Attached is the membership form, or you can access it on the blog, Bring the completed form to the June Luncheon and give it to Sandra Kennedy. On the back of the form please include your emergency contact information. July 10 Ice Cream Social Our annual ice cream social will take place the second Tuesday in July at 12:30 pm. As always, we will have regular and sugar free ice cream, root beer for floats, and wonderful toppings. Please join us for this sweet event. 4 Member News Minnesota Memories by T Carter Congratulations to T Carter who is exhibiting 30 works of art at the Remick Gallery in Windom, Minnesota. In collaboration with The Cottonwood Historical Society, the exhibit continues through September 1, Through quilting, T Carter expresses her love of the Minnesota prairie and woodlands as well as telling stories about hidden histories and ordinary people. Charity Quilt News Recent donations include: 5/2-7 fidget quilts were delivered to the Agape Reservoir for challenged families through the monthly Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church dinner. 5/10-20 Blankets and 3 knit shawls were donated to the Fairfax County visiting nurse program. She was very happy to have something to bring to the young families. Mount Vernon Quilters Unlimited Business Meeting May 8, 2018 Hollin Hall Senior Center Call to Order: President Rickie Frost called the meeting to order. There were 23 in attendance. The minutes were approved, as published in the May newsletter. President s Report: The 2018/2019 budget will be voted on at the June luncheon. Let Rickie know if you have any concerns or changes.

5 QU has made another change to their bylaws. Since they initiated the change, our membership isn t required to approve it. A date in the MVQU bylaws was corrected, and the QU Secretary will be sending new copies of the bylaws to the President for signatures A copy of the liability insurance certificate from QU has been provided and is in the President s file. QU Quilt Show Representative: Jeanne Farmer reported that more volunteers are needed at the QU show, especially for classes. Sign up on the QU website. Treasurer s Report: Veronica Abrams reported that our total income for this year is $3, and total disbursements are $5, Vice President s Report: If you have signed up for the September workshop, please send a check to Nancy Barkume or Ruth Roush by the June luncheon. Dianne Tippins and Jim Melton talked about the May 22 program, the International Fashion Show. An eblast will be sent out describing the program. Volunteers are needed for set up at 11:30 am, and to sit at tables with displays. A gift will be given to each member who wears clothing from another country. There will be music and traditional foods will be served. Announcements: There are tickets available for the Singer Featherweight raffle. The drawing will be held at the June luncheon. On May 29 (Charity Workshop date) there will be an in-house Jelly Roll contest. Details to follow. A sign-up sheet was passed for the June luncheon. A meat dish will be provided by MVQU. Help is needed for set up and clean up. Joan Oelschlager is chairing the event. Quilts will be collected for the QU show on these dates: May 15, starting at noon, at the Bee, Room 216 May 22, at the program meeting May 29, at the charity workshop Contact Ginny Mayes if you are not able to bring your quilt on these dates. Each quilt must be in a zippered bag that is labeled. Mary Mazzuchi announced that there will be a Storybook Quilt activity on August 1, 2018 at the Falls Church Library. If anyone is interested in working with teens on a clothing project, contact her. Zoe Ann Brown won the fat quarter give-away. The color for June is blue. There were many show and tells.
