1 April 2018 Newsletter Mount Vernon Chapter Officers President Rickie Frost Vice Presidents Committee Nancy Barkume, Jim Melton, Ruth Roush Secretary Cynthia Johnson Treasurers Veronica Abrams and Sandra Kennedy Nominating Chair Libby Dudley President s Message Is Spring finally here??? Sure hope so, my blooming bulbs are suffering from snow shock and don t really know what to do. The little rabbits in my yard are having a grand time eating all the tender shoots and they better not be eating the buds as well.. of course, what could I do anyway, I did try to speak reasonably to them, but somehow, I don t believe they get it. Our MVQU Chapter has been doing wonderful things under the leadership of Susan Crowe, our Charity Chair. Make sure you read her report listing the donations that have been recently made. She also has ambitious plans for the future. Susan reminds us all that we are raffling off a gorgeous Feather Weight Sewing Machine and that the drawing will be held at the June Luncheon. Jeanne Farmer and I attended the QU meeting last night and I want to pass on a couple of updates to the agenda. Discussion is continuing on the amount increase of the insurance policy that is presently in effect. The board will make a final decision and then it will be presented to the chapters.

2 Plan for the Quilt show are progressing. The quilt displays should be glorious. The challenges interesting (We have the FIDGET challenge display). The vendors will be well stocked and the classes and the presentation by Jinny Beyer will be inspiring. It appears there will be over 500 quilts for display. Amazing! Lots of talent in our Chapters. Jeanne has done and is doing an incredible job for MVQU. Classes are on line ready for you to sign up. So, get with it, and perhaps learn a new skill and have lot of fun doing it. She also has the Quilt Show Totes for sale. Thank you so much to all of you who have volunteered to provide the snacks at the end of our meetings. I know I look forward to all those wonderful treats. Please give Jeanne all the support she needs. I m asking all of you to think WARM thoughts. Nothing better than sunshine, lovely breezes, blooming fragrant flowers and pale green buds and grasses. It is a truly gorgeous world we have been given. Enjoy every moment. Happy Spring! Fondly, Rickie Nominating Committee Report The Elections Are Coming! Business Meeting - Tuesday, April 10-12:30 pm. The list of candidates was published in the March Newsletter and is presented again below. The following are willing to serve as MVQU Officers for the year: MVQU Candidates for President: Rickie Frost Co-VPs: Susan Crowe and Carolyn Paden Secretary: Barbara Zygiel Co-Treasurers: Veronica Abrams and Sandra Kennedy Nominating Chair: Zoe Ann Brown MVQU Committees Thanks also to all those who have stepped up to fill committee positions for There are still a few openings. They offer an opportunity to get to know fellow members and to support everyone in enjoying their membership. Still open: Community Displays, December Luncheon, President's Quilt, and MVQU Representative for Big QU Show Also available for consideration are Bee Enhancement, Block Exchange, Challenge, and Quilt Camp. The last four are extra activities that can further enrich our year. If you or a team would like to take on any of these committees, let an officer know. Libby Dudley, Nominating Chair

Featherweight Raffle Blanche Ammon's husband kindly donated her Featherweight Sewing Machine to MVQU. Raffle tickets will be available at the business meeting for $10 each. Quilters Carnival (MVQU members and associate members only) Tuesday, April 24, 12:30 pm to 2 pm This event was first held two years ago and is back by popular demand. We provide lunch and you get to visit the booths featuring a hand and neck masseuse, scissors sharpener (no knives please), and verbal quilt appraiser. Bring in a treasured family quilt or two and our appraiser will tell you when they were made and give an approximate value. Our guild photographer Sally Barber will be there to photograph any quilt you bring in. Door prizes will be awarded. We will have a UFO Swap at the carnival. Check the back of your closet for that old UFO that you no longer like and will never finish. You bring a UFO and you can trade it for someone else's. You must bring one to participate. You never know - someone else s discard may be your new treasure. You can sign up at the April business meeting to help with set up and clean up at the Carnival. Plan on being there at least one of the three days. The sewing machine give-away is at 3:30pm on Sunday and you must be present to win. Volunteering to help will allow you to purchase a three-day pass for the price of a one-day. You can shop till you drop on Friday and/or Saturday and return on Sunday for the Chapters Jelly Roll Contest, and the big drawing. Don t miss it! On Your Mark, Get Set Go! As reported last month, Big QU is sponsoring a jellyroll race during this year s show. It will take place on Sunday afternoon, June 3, in the demo area of the east hall. Each chapter is being asked to provide a team of three people. (note: Only one sewing machine is allowed per team.) Big QU will provide the jellyrolls for the race. The team who finishes first wins $100 for their chapter. A Missouri Star Quilt tutorial on how to make the quilt top can be found on YouTube. The finished quilt top should be used for a charity quilt. MVQU needs to put together a team of three and also have a team of supporters to cheer them on. Jeanne Farmer is making scarves for team members to wear. At the May 29 charity workshop, Susan Crowe would like to put together at least two teams to race each other, finishing a jelly roll quilt per Jeanne's instruction. The winner goes to the QU finals at the show. No cost to you - gather three friends & go for it if you can! Bragging rights!! Cheering/jeering will be encouraged. Please name your team with something linked to Mount Vernon. If you are interested in participating, contact Jeanne at jlfarmer54@hotmail.com. Would you like to volunteer at the QU Show?
