1 GSQA Meeting Minutes 4/28/18 Pensacola, FL The quarterly general meeting of the Gulf States Quilting Association was held on Saturday, April 28, The meeting was called to order at 10:05 a.m. by President Roberta Wilson. President Roberta Wilson welcomed and recognized The Pensacola Guild for hosting the meeting and thanked all who travelled to the meeting. Recognized members, guests, and first time attendees. Abbreviated minutes of the meeting was read by Connie Day. A motion was made to accept the minutes by Angie Madden and seconded by Tommie Morden. Gaye Smith read the Treasurer s report. A discussion of investments followed. President Elect - Alesia Williams The 2018 Opportunity Quilt activities are now over. The 2020 Opportunity Quilt committee has been meeting on a regular schedule and has a design nearly ready to recommend to the Board. Plans are to have block kits available to meet most quilting skill levels. There will be pieced blocks as well as appliqué blocks. The sale of the kits are planned for the October 2018 General Meeting. Alesia thanked the committee for their dedication, knowledge and time to this project. Committee members are Paula McKenna, Laura Robertson, Pat Schabla, and Mary Girardi. Quilt Show Director Laura Broders Laura thanked all those who participated in the 2018 Quilt Show held at the Northshore Harbor Center in Slidell; quilt entrants, chairing and/or volunteering their time, talent and support that it takes to make the show successful. Entries increased from the 2016 show. There were a few glitches in moving to the electronic registration, however, help was offered and was overall welcomed. There were 16 vendors, including a few on-line and specialty vendors, and one blade sharpener at the Show. Judy Walker did a wonderful job on the publicity as well as GSQA members marketing the show in their communities. Elizabeth Townsend of Just Wanna Quilt prepared a podcast of the show. GSQA made a presentation of 102 quilts made and donated by members to the St. Tammany Parish Fire and Sheriff departments, Slidell Police Department and Safe Harbor, a shelter for women and children. Those public responders noted their appreciation for the generous donations. The NQA certified judges were wowed by the entries. They clearly noticed and remarked that GSQA members had stepped up their game. They were impressed with the designs executed, skilled workmanship and challenges taken by the quilters to push themselves to the next level. Some were recommended to entry into national shows and exhibits. All winner information can be found on the website. Viewers Choice was Cleo Breaux for Woodland Creatures. The Opportunity Quilt was won by Nancy Habisreiting of the Queen Bees Guild of Franklinton.
2 Stormy weather the Saturday of the show and the previous weekend of the Rosebud luncheon impacted attendance at both events. Approximately 1150 quilters, family members, and friends were treated to a colorful display of beauty, talent, perseverance and joy! Pursuit of Excellence-Paula Matthews The February 17 th POE was held in Hattiesburg, MS and was hosted by the Stitch n Post Quilt Shop. The turnout was great with 20 quilters sewing that day with 5 first time attending a POE. 2 members were attending from a newly organized quilt guild. The next scheduled POE is May 19 th, hosted by the Quilting Fans in LaPlace, LA at the St. John Parish Library, 2920 New Highway 51. Please get all applications in to attend. There are a few spots open at this time. Locations are still needed for the 2018/19 POE s. All that is needed is a room large enough to sit 20 sewers comfortably, and tables and chairs. On October 27th, we have a teacher coming but the location is still up in the air. Nancy Prince who does thread painting will be our speaker. We hope to have a class the day before. On January 26, 2019, we have Lola Jenkins coming. Again, we need a place to hold the meeting! Lola s speciality is portraitures. We also want to hold a class the day before the meeting. Please, please go home and talk to your guild about hosting a meeting. Historian-Angie Madden Angie proposed a change to the by-laws to add a new board position to coordinate the Travelling Teacher. The job description for the position has been written and the position will be filled by a recommendation of the President with board approval at the board meeting.
