Exchange, Nov. 1st Shawnee County 4-H Achievement Night, Nov. 3rd Bunny Bunch, Nov. 5th S.T.A.L.K-Jr. Leaders, Nov. 8th Office Closed/Veterans Day, Nov. 12th Mark Your Calendar! Office Closed/Thanksgiving, Nov. 22nd -23rd Paw Prints, Nov. 26th Fair Board, Nov. 27th Clothing Cares, Nov. 29th Livestock Committee, Nov. 14th Shooting Sports, Nov.15th KYLF, Nov. 17th-18th Officer Leader Training Did you attend Officer Leader Training? The theme this year was Incredibles. The training started out with a game of Kahoot! which everyone seemed to enjoy. Later, the youth were broken up according to their offices and attended classes to learn more about their duties as an officer. After that, teams were challenged to build the tallest freestanding tower possible from uncooked spaghetti, string, and masking tape. Each team needed to work together to come up with a plan and build the tower. The results ranged from no tower at all, to some amazing structures. During the training, the 4-Hers were able to participate in mock meetings and practice the skills they had just learned during the officer breakout. Before Officer Leader Training wrapped up, the teams completed a fun scavenger hunt both inside and outside the Kansas National Air Guard Museum looking for objects or areas in the museum based on clues such as Seek a place that is similar to what Syndrome worked out of where hot lava flowed around! It had been raining when Officer Leader Training got started, but thankfully by the time the scavenger hunt began the rain had mostly stopped. A big thank you should go to the Kansas National Air Guard Museum as they let us use the museum free of charge. Thank you to the volunteers that made this event possible! ~ Calista Covel, Events Council Reporter 2

Pick A Date and Join the Fun on December 20th Kansas Day is just around the corner and you know what that means.. we need your help in making bread in a bag kits. We will be putting together bread in a bag kit for School Enrichment on December 20th, Thursday at 1:00 pm in the upstairs meeting room. We are looking for about 12 volunteers. This is a great opportunity to spend time with your fellow 4-H friends, and add community service to your record book. So come and join the fun! The School Enrichment program is an opportunity to reach school-age children that may not have had any other 4-H experience. This is not a fundraiser for the Extension Office. The schools pay a nominal fee per student to cover the cost of the supplies. The bread in a bag Wheat Science program is one of the most popular programs offered to the elementary teachers in Shawnee County. Please call Kim Seeley at x112 or kjseeley@ksu.edu by December 9th so we will know how many helpers to count on. January Jamboree It is that time of year to start thinking about a super cool craft to share at January Jamboree! January Jamboree will take place at Countryside United Methodist Church on January 5th from 1:00pm- 3:00pm. More detail to come in next months Chatterbox! 3

H Horse Panorama The H Horse Panorama has been scheduled for January at Rock Springs 4-H Center. Registration and contest rules for Horse Panorama will be posted to the Kansas 4-H web site soon on the Horse Events page Kansas 4-H Dog Judges Certification and Training Coming The Kansas 4-H Dog Judges Certification and Training will be January 26-27, 2019, in South Hutchinson, Kansas, at the Hutchinson Kennel Club. Beginning the training on Friday evening has allowed participants in one weekend to learn about the four dog phases of showmanship, obedience, agility and rally obedience of the Kansas 4-H Dog Care and Training Project. Those attending (16 and older) to become judges or to re-certify as judges, experience judging classes to practice the skills necessary to effectively judge local 4-H dog shows. This is also a good opportunity for local project leaders and older 4-H members to observe the training to learn new knowledge and to better understand how they will be judged at invitational and the Kansas State Fair 4-H Dog Show. Participants may attend the judges certification and judges training without being certified to judge. 5

The Marilyn & Jerry Dudley Scholarship encourages the Joy of Sewing Marilyn Dudley was an accomplished seamstress and shared her passion for sewing with many 4-Hers through the years. When Marilyn passed away in May, her family established the Marilyn & Jerry Dudley Scholarship with the intent to provide opportunities to promote the interest and skills related to clothing/sewing craft construction and style review. These opportunities will be available for Shawnee County 4-H youth. As you select projects for the next 4-H year, now is a great time to learn to sew or enhance your skills! The Topeka Sewing Guild will be involved in helping host an educational event and mentor young sewers. All youth who use a sewing machine or serger to construct a garment or article, have it judged for the Shawnee County Fair, and who model it in the fashion review, will be eligible for a partial reimbursement of the cost of fabric and notions. Those enrolled in the Clothing and Textiles project will be notified of opportunities as they develop throughout the year. Further guidelines and applications for reimbursement will be provided to those participating in the project. The Dudley family plans to support enhanced educational activities and awards identified in the scholarship for the next five years. They hope to see enrollment in the Clothing and Textiles project increase and to instill the love of sewing into many of our 4-Hers. Junior Swine Producer Day Scheduled The 2019 Kansas Junior Swine Producer Day will be held on Saturday, March 9 in Weber Arena. Mark your calendar! This is a family-friendly educational event dedicated to youth, parents, project leaders, and agents with interest in the swine project. A detailed agenda and registration information will be released later this fall. This event has been added to the K-State Pulse Calendar. 6

Deer Trail 48-4H: Making a Difference at Cornerstone and Ronald McDonald House The Deer Trail Club organized two events for 48 Hours of 4-H. The first was on Saturday, October 13 volunteering at Ronald McDonald House Topeka. We cleaned cabinets and other areas around the house to make it a more pleasant for the families served there during difficult times. The second was delayed a week due to weather and occurred on Sunday, October 21. We had 11 volunteers from two clubs. We picked up trash for and improved landscaping for a whole block of housing managed by Cornerstone Topeka. We filled a truck with garbage and made a noticeable difference in the neighborhood. Deer Trail looks forward to helping Cornerstone again in the future! Auburn Club By Ethan Jackson Officer Leader Training was held on October 7 th at the National Guard Museum. The Auburn and Silver Lake clubs planned the event. The theme was Incredible Leadership. At the training, 4-H youth learned more about their offices and how to be good leaders and were given information and supplies to support their new officer role. Everyone had a good time and door prizes were given away. Auburn club participated in the Auburn Days parade by designing and decorating a float. The theme for the float was Under the Sea in 4-H. 7

4-H Sport Fishing Project Club Again, for the H year there will be a Sport Fishing project club! Youth will be taught the safety and skills needed to be successful fishers by 4-H volunteers Brett Fox and Dan VanHoozier.
