1 January 2017 District-wide Cloverbuds The Sunshine Makers Cloverbud Club will meet January 12th (Always the 2nd Thursday of the month) at the Paola Office from 5:30-6:30pm. Any Cloverbud is welcome to come. Cloverbuds must be 5-6 years old by Jan. 1, Bring a family photo to use in our session. Jr. Leaders Meetings The next Miami County Jr. Leader Meeting will be January 9th at 7pm at the Paola Office. The next Linn County Jr. Leader Meeting will be January 15th at 4:00 pm at the Linn County 4-H Bldg. MARAIS DES CYGNES EXTENSION DISTRICT 4-H Newsletter 4-H Councils The next Miami County 4-H Council Meeting will be January 9th at 8pm at the Paola Office. The next Linn County 4-H Council Meeting will be January 25th at 7pm at Linn County 4-H Building. 4-H Enrollment All Returning 4-H ers need to enroll online by January 3, May 1st will be add/drop deadline and New Member enrollment deadline. Reminder: You must be 7 before January 1, 2017 to enroll as a 4-H Member. If you are 5-6 years old before January 1, 2017, you can enroll as a Cloverbud. Enroll Online at Participation Forms are online this year and must be completed before your enrollment is official and before the Jan. 3 deadline. Volunteers Must Enroll All Screened Volunteers need to enroll in the 4-H Online system as well. Just enroll as if you are enrolling a 4-H er and then mark yourself as a volunteer. This is the way that we are tracking screened volunteers. Volunteers Enroll Online at Club Leader Meetings The next club leader meeting will be January 31st at 7:30pm at Labette Bank Meeting Room in LaCygne. It will be a joint meeting with leaders from both counties. We will be discussing possible changes from the State at this meeting. Area KAP Screening Volunteers Needed I need 2-3 volunteers to screen KAPs in Eureka, KS on Friday, Jan 20th. Karla will be driving so you can ride with her. Let Karla know by January 6th. Area KAPs Due Is you were selected as a Senior County Project Champion, you are eligible to send your KAP to area judging. You should have received an about it. 2 District-wide Events Important Upcoming Dates 4-H Club Day February 18th 4-H Regional Day March 25th Discovery Days May 30th-June 2nd 4-H Camp June 14th-17th Livestock Quality Assurance (LQA) Dates All Miami County Fair Exhibitors in Beef, Sheep, Swine, and Goats must attend one of the following LQA classes to show at the 2017 Miami County Fair. All Linn County Fair Swine Exhibitors must attend one of the following LQA Classes to show swine at the 2017 Linn County Fair. Classes will be held: January 3 2:00pm Paola Office March 21 2:00pm Paola Office March 22 6:30pm Mound City Fair Grounds May 10 6:30pm Paola Office Do not wait until the last minute! These are the only classes we will offer this year! 4-H Club Day 4-H Club Day will be February 18th at Prairie View Middle School. Event Guidelines are available online at Register at due by February 3rd at midnight. Senior Scholarships Scholarship Letter went out to seniors in both counties. They are due by Jan 9th to your local office. Although current college students are not eligible for our county scholarships you, can apply for state scholarships using the Kansas 4-H Scholarship Form available online at The state scholarships are due in a Marais des Cygnes Office by Jan 9th. Membership Pins Application Reminder! Look over your member Achievement Pin Application so that you know what activities and events you need to participate in. Horse Judging practice at the Mound City Office February 7, 16 & 21 all dates at 6:30pm Contest February 24 - EquiFest in Topeka Horse Level Testing April 4 at the Paola Office April 18 at the Mound City Office Both dates will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will cover Level 1 at 6:30 p.m. and Level 2 at 7:30 p.m. Each level will cost $10 so please bring payment with you. 3 State Events 2017 Kansas 4-H Ambassador Training The 2017 Kansas 4-H Ambassador Training will be February at the Rock Springs 4-H Center near Junction City. It is open to all county/district 4-H ambassadors, ambassador advisors and Extension staff. The theme is Ambassadors Growing 4-H. There will be six youth workshops, three adult workshops, two speakers, with lots of fun and fellowship. Full details will be posted on the Kansas 4-H web site by December 15th. Registration will be on the CVent system, and will close on February 1 st. The Kansas 4-H Ambassador Action Team accepts members (teens, volunteers and Extension staff) year-round. Registration for Horse Panorama will be posted to the Kansas 4-H web site soon. Check the following link for information and rules for 4-H Horse Panorama: 4-H Day with the Lady Cats The Kansas Association of Extension 4-H Agents is excited to inform you that the 9 th Annual 4-H Day with the Wildcat Women s Basketball team has been scheduled for Saturday, February 11, 2017, when the Wildcats take on the Iowa State Cyclones. Tip-off will be at 1:00 p.m. For $20, each individual will receive a ticket into the game, a game day t- shirt, and a $7 meal voucher to use at the main concession stands. Registration will be online again this year with a January 17, 2017, deadline. National Festival of Breads 2017 The National Festival of Breads will take place June 17, 2017 in Manhattan, KS. Do you enjoy baking bread? Or do you know someone who does? Develop an original recipe and enter now! This is for amateur bakers and the eight finalists come to Manhattan to bake their breads and learn about the wheat industry from farm to table. The contest is open to youth and adults. This would a great opportunity for 4-H youth to show off their baking skills and creativity! Entries are due January 16, The contest title sponsors are Kansas Wheat, King Arthur Flour, and Red Star Yeast. Kansas Junior Producer Days Specie producer days are held to provide educational material and hands-on experiences for youth, parents, leaders, and extension agents. Various speakers share information on topics such as selection, nutrition, showmanship, fitting, reproduction, feeding, and disease control. Talks, demonstrations, hands-on activities, and door prizes are present at all events. Beef and Sheep days are held in the even years and Swine and Goat days are held in the odd years.
