2 Page 2 JUNE 2017 EXECUTIVE TEAM MEETING: Tuesday, June 20, 6:00 pm Upstairs in the conference room of the Extension Office. All 4-H Council Officers are required to attend. 4-H COUNCIL DATE June 26, Downstairs in the west meeting room JUNIOR LEADERS: June 26, 2017 Following the council meeting downstairs in the west meeting room Remember to check out our website: Announcements, rules and entry forms for upcoming events may be found on the website. For county shows throughout the state stop by the office and look at our notebook. Check out the State 4-H website for information on Upcoming State 4-H Events. LOST TAGS If your animal loses a tag you are required to do the following: Call Donna at the Extension Office (620) Hang on to the tag that came out of the animal s ear if the tag is found for identification. State Livestock Nomination Deadline Approaching All small animal state livestock nominations (non-market beef) are due June 15th. This is a postmark deadline, but families are encouraged to submit their nominations early to avoid missing the deadline! Market and commercial female livestock projects that will be shown at the Kansas State Fair or Kansas Junior Livestock Show must be nominated in order to enter and exhibit in the state shows this fall. This includes commercial heifers, market swine, commercial gilts, market lambs, commercial ewes, and ALL meat goats. There is not a separate division for registered breeding does at either state show, so all meat goats must be nominated in order to be eligible to show. The 2017 nomination information has been distributed to county offices and may be found on the Youth Livestock Program website. The 2017 Declaration and Specie Nomination Forms MUST be used for nominations to be accepted. All families are encouraged to use the specie checklist as a guide to ensure their nominations are complete upon submission. This resource may be found on the Youth Livestock Program website, or through the local county office. The Rookie Guide is also a great resource for families who are nominating animals for the first time. Please double check that there are not any blank fields or questions on the Declaration and Nomination Forms before placing them in the mail. As a reminder, ear notches are required for swine nominations and scrapie tag numbers are required for sheep and goats. This year, the full scrapie tag number is required, which includes the flock/premise ID and individual animal number. Nominations received without this information will be considered incomplete and returned to the family for completion. Confirmation letters will be sent to families once their nominations have been processed, and reports will regularly be posted on the Youth Livestock Program website. Families are encouraged to use one of these options to verify their nominations. A complete nomination does NOT constitute show entry. The Kansas State Fair and KJLS will release entry information to agents and through their respective websites as entry season draws near. State Fair Grand Drive entries will be due July 15th, and KJLS entries will be due August 15th. Animals that are nominated, but do not follow the appropriate entry processes set forth by each show, will not be permitted to show. State Horse Judging Contest The State Horse Judging Contest will be held on June 22nd in Salina at the fairgrounds. The contest will be individual only, with the top four senior individuals representing Kansas as a composite team at a national event. Contest rules and registration info will be posted soon.

While much of Kansas is green and lush now, we know the situation can change very rapidly in Kansas. The 2017 Kansas State Fair rules state if a fire burn ban is in effect for any county in Kansas, exhibitors in any Kansas county are not required to launch their rocket(s). All requirements for the launching of rockets for the state fair and the documenting of the launching are suspended for the duration of the ban. We advise all counties to be cautious and use good judgment in planning and conducting county rocket launches, and consider cancelling them if dry conditions warrant.

Join us and others around the nation, promoting 4-H through fair season by using and encouraging our 4-H families to use #ShareattheFair when posting fair photos on social media (i.e., Facebook, twitter, Instagram, etc.) Another great opportunity to engage in the conversation - encourage alumni in your community to use #ShareattheFair to share photos of their fair experiences back in the day. What a great way for alumni to take a walk down memory lane and share how 4-H has impacted them. Hashtags allow us to unify across the state and nation and allow us to join the larger conversation. But, to be effective, hashtags have to be used and used consistently. Help us in this effort! We are asking all 4-H members, parents, volunteers and 4-H alumni to use #ShareattheFair in addition to #4HGrowsHere and #KS4H.
