2 Page 2 JUNE 2016 State Livestock Nominations due d June 15th All small animal state livestock nominations (non-market beef) are due June 15th. This includes commercial heifers, market swine, commercial gilts, market lambs, commercial ewes, and ALL meat goats. There is not a separate division for registered breeding does at either state show, so all meat goats must be nominated in order to be eligible to show. Any 4-H or FFA youth who would like to exhibit in the Kansas State Fair Grand Drive or KJLS is required to nominate their livestock projects. The 2016 nomination information has been distributed to county offices and may be found on the Youth Livestock Program website. The 2016 Declaration and Specie Nomination Forms MUST be used for nominations to be accepted. All families are encouraged to use the specie checklist as a guide to ensure their nominations are complete upon submission. This resource may be found on the Youth Livestock Program website, or through the local county office. Please double check that there are not any blank fields or questions on the Declaration and Nomination Forms before placing them in the mail. As a reminder, ear notches are required for swine nominations and scrapie tag numbers are required for sheep and goats. Nominations received without this information will be considered incomplete and returned to the family for completion. Confirmation letters will be sent to families once their nominations have been processed, and reports will regularly be posted on the Youth Livestock Program website. Families are encouraged to use one of these options to verify their nominations. A complete nomination does NOT constitute show entry. The Kansas State Fair and KJLS will release entry information to agents and through their respective websites as entry season draws near. State Fair Grand Drive entries will be due July 15th, and KJLS entries will be due August 15th. Animals who are nominated, but do not follow the appropriate entry processes set forth by each show, will not be permitted to show. USDA POULTRY TESTING Poultry projects require pullorum testing for County and State Fair. Testing time falls within the time limits set for both fairs. PLEASE be sure to get your poultry there on this date as it is the only date set for Reno County. Beth Graham will provide poultry testing at the Extension Office on June 18, from 10 to 1pm. Cost: 50 per animal plus the price of the band.

CLOVERBUD CONNECTS CLOVERBUDS HAS BEEN CANCELLED FOR JUNE 4 TH WE WILL MEET AGAIN IN AUGUST!!!! IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS YOU CAN CALL H Campference H Campference is for youth ages (before January 1, 2016), and will be held June 24-27, 2016 at Rock Springs 4-H Center. Participants will experience the feel of a conference, while enjoying the 'camp' activities Rock Springs 4-H Center has to offer. This is a great transitional opportunity, as these tweens go from being a camper to attending educational conferences. 4-H Campference will feature workshops about opportunities in the 4-H program and how to better interact with others. Participants will meet other youth from around the state of Kansas. Remember to check out our website: Announcements, rules and entry forms for upcoming events may be found on the website. For county shows throughout the state stop by the office and look at our notebook. Check out the State 4-H website for information on Upcoming State 4-H Events. ************************************* Kansas All Breeds Junior Dairy Show The Kansas All Breeds Junior Dairy Show - Salina, is scheduled for August Registrations will be due in August for the Judging, Quiz Bowl and Skill-a-thon contests. Register early as the space will fill on a first come basis, and Campference was full in 2014 and 2015! Registration and detailed information will be on the State 4-H. ATTENTION ALL RABBIT PARTICIPANTS The next rabbit meeting will be Tuesday June 14 th at 7pm in the west meeting room at the Reno County Extension Office. Piper Schlatter will be doing a showmanship clinic for all those wanting to attend. Tammy Brown will also be doing tattoos for any of the rabbits that are needing them. There will also be a meeting Tuesday July 7pm in the west meeting room at the Extension Office.

Please contact Tammy Brown (620) for questions about the rabbit project Horticulture Judging Contest The State 4-H Horticulture Judging Contest will be held Saturday, August 20, 2016 on the campus of Kansas State University, Manhattan. The study material for the years 2015 & 2016 is taken from The Kansas Garden Guide, KSRE publication S-51 (Rev.) March This publication is available for purchase at local Extension offices or can be downloaded The Kansas Garden Guide. The written exam selections from The Kansas Garden Guide include pp (Introduction, Planning a Garden, Composting, Soil Improvement, Seeding and Planting and pp (Herbs). Be sure to use the 2010 version of the garden guide. This information is available on the Kansas 4-H Website on the Horticulture Judging Contest page. Contest specifics will be available this summer. Effective January 1, 2015, contestants who have judged as an official team member at the National Junior Horticulture Association Judging Contest are not eligible to compete as a team or as an individual at the State Kansas 4-H Horticulture Judging Contest. Make a difference in your life and someone else s!!! 4-H Entomology Insect Spectacular, June 24 & 25 The 24th annual Insect Spectacular is set for June 24 & 25 at the Genesis Center, 123 N. Oak, Pratt, Kansas. Classes include beginning and advanced insect identification, pinning, and many others. There is also a session for Project Leaders. Information and registration can be found at Registration is due by May 25. Along with entomology project educational sessions, a 4-H Entomology Judges Training session is set for June 24, 9 am to 11 am prior to the start of the Insect Spectacular. Pam VanHorn, State 4-H Specialist, offered these clarifications based on learning and risk management. 4-H Horseless Horse 4-H member does not own or lease a horse Project intended to offer a 4-H member opportunity to learn about horses 4-H member may participate in judging contests, quiz bowl, hippology and give presentations 4-H member may volunteer to assist another 4-H member at horse show and trails rides Project member may exhibit at local fair with a borrowed 4-H Identified horse in the showmanship class only. No riding.

If you mark them in a notebook or calendar, you will have them readily available so that you can complete your record book and KAP this fall. 10 AROUND THE COUNTY NEWS A New page we are starting is news from around the county. If you participate in a livestock show, do well in sports, are in a dance recital or are in the play at your school send me information and pictures then we will try and get it into the newsletter. It is always fun to see what our 4-H kiddos are doing on their down time. Here are a few things that happened this last month. Job well done 4-Her s It s prom night for our Reno County Home School 4-Hers Back row Becca Paine, Grace Zongker, Rylie Meyers and Toni Young Front Row Maddison Kauffman, Jared Tremaine, Simeon Hayes, Haley Kauffman and Alice Hayes all from the Royal Clovers 4-H Club except Grace Zongker who is from the Buhler Club

11 Congratulations to Jacob Grinstead from the Thomadora 4-H Club. Monday May 9 th Jacob signed his letter of intent to become a member of the KSU Rodeo Team. He is pictured here with Coach Casey Winn. Jacob is the son of Jerry and Sheri Grinstead. Nickerson High School has started a Trap Shooting Club. Katlin Colle of the Nickerson Clovers is a team member along with her brother Kevin and Katie Graham of the Mitchell 4-H club. All of their hard work from their 4-H shooting sports project should come in handy. Good luck to the 3 K s in all of your school competitions. Congratulations to the Haven Wildcats for taking 2 nd at the 4A State Softball Tournament. Two of those team members are 4-H members Haley Harner of the Western Reno County 4-H Club and Bailey Brawner of the Haven 4-H Club. Can t wait to see what is in store for next year. Great job ladies!!!!
