5 HORSE NEWS FROM THE STATE OFFICE Horse Rules Review Horse deadlines are quickly approaching let s review a few frequently asked questions. Horse Ownership: Youth may own the horse themselves, or use a family-owned horse (immediate family: mother, father, stepparent, brother, sister, grandparent, or legal guardian). Leasing: The leasing option is intended for youth who are unable to participate fully in the 4-H horse project because they do not have access to family-owned horse, provided that they manage the horse at least 75 percent of the time from May 1 through September 30. Sharing project horses: Siblings may show the same horse provided they are not in the same class. If both are in the same age classification, they must decide what classes each will show in. 2 year and 3-year old Snaffle-bit: No one is allowed to ride this nominated horse except you from May 1 until the conclusion of the Kansas State Fair. This includes a trainer, parents, horseless horse member, another 4-H member, sibling, potential buyer, etc. ********************************************************************************************** Kansas 4-H Horseless Horse Questions have come concerning the Horseless Horse project below are clarifications based on learning and risk management. 4-H member does not own or lease a horse Project intended to offer a 4-H member opportunity to learn about horses 4-H member may participate in judging contests, quiz bowl, hippology and give presentations 4-H member may volunteer to assist another 4-H member at horse show and trails rides Project member may exhibit at local fair with a borrowed 4-H Identified horse in the showmanship class only No riding Snaffle Bit Nominations Horse snaffle bit projects are due into the local Extension Office by May 1. 7 Page 7 APRIL AKC EUROPEAN OPEN JUNIORS (EOJ) AGILITY TEAM USA LOCAL HUTCHINSON, KS YOUTH RYAN KLAMM SELECTED AS ONE OF 19 JUNIORS WITH THEIR K-9 PARTNERS TO REPRESENT THE USA - IN THE NETHERLANDS JUNIOR AGILITY OLYMPICS On March 1st, Coach Susan Cochran announced the American Kennel Club s 2018 European Open Junior (EOJ) Agility Team USA. Currently there is no such thing as dog agility at the Olympics but to the 19 junior handers, three alternates and their K-9 companions who have been selected to represent the USA in the Netherlands July 13-15, this is just as spectacular! Training and traveling the world to compete at the highest level of junior dog agility takes the same amount of commitment and dedication. The EOJ is an agility competition is officially recognized by the Federation Cynologique Internationale (English: World Canine Organization), the largest international federation of kennel clubs. The competition is open to all dogs (min 18 months), children (born 2004 and younger) and juniors (born ). The individual dog competition categories are held in Large (shoulder height over 16 7/8 ) Medium (shoulder height 16 7/8 or less) and Small (shoulder height 13 3/4 or less). This year TEAM USA has eleven Large dog teams: nine Border Collies, one Dutch Shepard and a Mix Breed; seven Medium: one Miniature Poodle, one Nederlandse Kooikerhondje, one Border Collie, two Keeshonds and two Shelties; and three Small: two Shelties and a Miniature Poodle. The three alternates are coincidentally three large mixed breed dogs handled by young women. The handlers consist of three young men and 16 young women, from 11 states across the U.S., who are between the ages of 13 and 17. Ryan Klamm became interested in dog training in 2006 after receiving his first dog, a miniature Australian Shepherd he named Captain Patch, as a Christmas gift. Ryan was 6 years old. He started training with the Reno County 4-H dog club. In the summer of 2011, Ryan got his second dog, Bandit, a Border Collie. Bandit is a purebred dog but has no pedigree or papers. Both of his parents were working cattle dogs at a feedlot near Council Grove, KS. Ryan s interest in dog showing peaked in 2012 when he and Captain Patch won the UKC National Top Jr Handler in Obedience at Kalamazoo, MI. From there, Ryan began taking lessons with some of the best trainers in the area. He has since won several UKC Junior Championships and All Star Championships in Agility, Obedience, and Rally Obedience. Ryan competes in multiple statewide AKC trials including the AKC Junior Classic in Orlando, FL. Bandit has become Ryan s main agility dog. Ryan assists and teaches obedience and agility for the local 4-H Dog Club and the Hutchinson Kennel Club. Congratulations to all the teens selected to represent the USA: Anna Gigstad, Anneka Dahle, Avery Adams, Brie Schaff, Claire O Neil, Dynah Woodman, Elsje McDonald, Emma Hughes, Finley Richgels, Gabriella Kabakchieva, Hope Hindenach (Alt), Isabel Tagtow, Kai McCauley, Katie Doane (Alt), Kylie Doherty (Alt), Madison Edmunds, McKenzie Minto, Morgan Vance, Natalie Spinsby, Radence Tsow, Ryan Klamm and Sasha Zitter. Monetary donations can be made one of three ways: through Ryan s GoFundMe page ( eoj-team-usa), gofundme.com 2018 AKC EOJ Agility Team USA, or paypal.me/akceoj18. ALL MONIES WILL GO TO THE TEAM. You may specifically designate your money to a person or a breed. Once team expenses are paid, the money will be divided among the team members. 10 Look what s new for the county fair This is not necessarily a new class for the fair but the fairboard is trying a new approach. This year instead of the cookie jar being only an individual event it is also a club event. So get together with other club members and see what amazing ways you can to create a winning cookie jar. Fair is not that far away so put on your thinking hat. There may be more than one entry per club with different club members. The rules are listed below. 1. This contest is open to the general public. 2. Exhibitors may make one entry per division in this contest. 3. Recipe for each product must be on a 3"x5" card stapled to the entry form and taped, stapled or twist tied to the product. 4. Exhibits should be in clear plastic food bags, confectionary/bakery boxes, or disposable containers. 5. Each entry must be accompanied by an official entry form. Entry forms are available at the Reno County Extension Office. 6. All entries become the property of the Reno County Fair Board and will be sold following the judging. Commissioners Cookie Jar Getting Wild with 4-H is the theme for the 2018 Commissioners Cookie Jar. This is not only an individual event but a club/group entry. You do not need to be enrolled in foods to compete in this class. A group of 2 or more can compete. Use an assortment of cookies in a clear glass, wide mouth attractively decorated jar of 1 gallon capacity. The decorations and jar are not to exceed a height of 15 & width of 15. Cookies should be visible through at least a total of 50% of the jar and each cookie should be wrapped separately in clear plastic wrap. Jar must be filled with not less than 5 varieties of cookies using all of the following types at least once, Drop Cookies - dough is dropped by rounded or heaping teaspoonful onto baking sheet. Bar Cookies - spread dough in pan, bake and cut. Refrigerator Cookies - dough must be chilled in the refrigerator before baking. Rolled Cookies - dough must be rolled and cut into desired shapes with cookie cutter. Molded Cookies - formed into desired shapes with your hands. Bring a labeled sample cookie wrapped together with plastic wrap of each recipe made. Place all samples in a covered flat box (no need to decorate), so the judges will not need to open the decorated jar. Boxes and sample cookies will not be returned. Remember you need recipes for each type of cookie in your jar. Cookie jar will count 40%, cookies 60%. This year s winner will present the cookie jar to Reno County Commissioners at the Blue Ribbon BBQ night. $50 cash prize Sponsored by the Reno County Fairboard Class - OC1600 Commissioners Club Cookie Jar Donkey Class Here is another new class that was added last year for county fair that a lot of youth were unaware we had.
