4 Page 4 MARCH 2018 Discovery Days 2018: Tell Your Story Discovery Days is one of the largest events that is put on by the Kansas 4-H program and it would not be able to happen without the help and time that you put into it! This year Discovery Days will be held May 29-June 1, 2018 and classes will be held on May 30 and May 31. We are currently soliciting volunteers to teach classes while they are at Discovery Days. We offer class sessions that are 75 minutes in length, 3 hours in length and all day classes. If you have a hobby, passion or enjoy teaching a specific topic, we encourage you to sign up to teach at Discovery Days! Many of our instructors find their time rewarding and enjoy interacting with the delegates that attend Discovery Days. If you are interested in teaching a class, please sign up by clicking Feel free to share this information with youth and volunteers in your Local Extension Units who you think would be interested in teaching as well. The deadline to sign up to teach a class at Discovery Days is February 1. NEW for All classes will be asked to align their classes with the Content Priorities of STEM & Agriculture, Communication and the Arts, Healthy Living and Community Vitality (leadership & citizenship). Also, we will no longer be offering 90 minute sessions; they have been shortened to be 75 minute sessions to allow youth a little more flexibility with their schedules. Campference H Campference is for youth ages (before January 1, 2018), and will be held June 26-29, 2018 at Rock Springs 4-H Center. Participants will experience the feel of a conference, while enjoying the 'camp' activities Rock Springs 4-H Center has to offer. This is a great transitional opportunity, as these tweens go from being a camper to attending educational conferences. 4-H Campference will feature workshops about opportunities in the 4-H program and how to better interact with others. Participants will meet other youth from around the state of Kansas. Register early as the space will fill on a first come basis, and Campference was full with waiting lists for the last 5 years! Put is on your calendar now. Registration and detailed information will be the State 4-H Website in early spring. ******************************************************************** 2-Year Old & 3-Year Old Rule Changes There will be a new edition of the 4-H Horse Show Rule Book coming out this spring. Coming with the new edition will be some major changes to the 2-Year Old Snafflebit and 3-Year Old Projects. Those 4-Hers in the 2-Year Old Project should expect to show in two rail phases and be prepared for the interview phase. However, please let them know that the 2-Year Old Project will discontinued after the 2019 State Fair Horse Show. The 3-Year Old Project has been expanded. It will also have three total phases - Phase 1 is rail work, Phase 2 is a pattern, and Phase 3 is an interview. 4-Hers involved in the 3-Year Old Project should plan to participate in all three phases at this year's state fair. We will accept applications until April 25, Applications are on the Reno County 4-H page OR drop by the office and pick one up!

7 2018 Kansas 4-H SpaceTech Changes for the Kansas State Fair This is the second year for Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) at the Kansas State Fair. Last year only posters, displays and notebooks were exhibited. In 2018, additional exhibits will be accepted at the Kansas State Fair. Posters, display boards and notebook classes have all been renumbered in the 5700 series of classes in order to allow for consecutive numbers classes. New SpaceTech Classes: Division A Junior, 9-13 years old 5701 Unmanned Aerial System designed and constructed by exhibitor that is operated by a remote controlled device. This includes the UAS, plus one or more of the following: video, notebook, poster, display board, etc. This class is separate from educational exhibits. 9 Sirius Dog Club The Sirius, Reno County Dog Club members, accompanied by their dogs, visited the residents of the Sunshine Nursing Home in Buhler on February 17, Each member introduced themselves and their dog. They told residents their favorite thing about the project and the hardest thing about the project. Jonah Morgan explained Agility for the residents and his brother Calum helped explain Rally. All of the members were able to show the residents how their dogs performed in Obedience, Rally and Agility. Best of all, members were able to share their dogs and enjoy the residents. Several members were also able to watch the herding demonstration and Dr. Temple Grandin s presentation on animal handling at the Kansas Cattle Drive, held in Buhler on the same day.

11 Look what s new for the county fair This is not necessarily a new class for the fair but the fairboard is trying a new approach. This year instead of the cookie jar being an individual event it is now a club event. So get together with other club members and see what amazing ways you can to create a winning cookie jar. Fair is not that far away so put on your thinking hats. There may be more than one entry per club with different club members. The rules are listed below. 1. This contest is open to the general public. 2. Exhibitors may make one entry per division in this contest. 3. Recipe for each product must be on a 3"x5" card stapled to the entry form and taped, stapled or twist tied to the product. 4. Exhibits should be in clear plastic food bags, confectionary/bakery boxes, or disposable containers. 5. Each entry must be accompanied by an official entry form. Entry forms are available at the Reno County Extension Office. 6. All entries become the property of the Reno County Fair Board and will be sold following the judging. Club Commissioners Club Cookie Jar Getting Wild with 4-H is the theme for the 2018 Commissioners Club Cookie Jar. This is now a club/group entry. You do not need to be enrolled in foods to compete in this class. A group of 2 or more can compete. Use an assortment of cookies in a clear glass, wide mouth attractively decorated jar of 1 gallon capacity. The decorations and jar are not to exceed a height of 15 & width of 15. Cookies should be visible through at least a total of 50% of the jar and each cookie should be wrapped separately in clear plastic wrap. Jar must be filled with not less than 5 varieties of cookies using all of the following types at least once, Drop Cookies - dough is dropped by rounded or heaping teaspoonful onto baking sheet. Bar Cookies - spread dough in pan, bake and cut. Refrigerator Cookies - dough must be chilled in the refrigerator before baking. Rolled Cookies - dough must be rolled and cut into desired shapes with cookie cutter. Molded Cookies - formed into desired shapes with your hands. Bring a labeled sample cookie wrapped together with plastic wrap of each recipe made. Place all samples in a covered flat box (no need to decorate), so the judges will not need to open the decorated jar. Boxes and sample cookies will not be returned. Remember you need recipes for each type of cookie in your jar. Cookie jar will count 40%, cookies 60%. This year s winner will present the cookie jar to Reno County Commissioners at the Blue Ribbon BBQ night. $50 cash prize Sponsored by the Reno County Fairboard Class - OC1600 Commissioners Club Cookie Jar Donkey Class Here is another new class that was added last year for county fair that a lot of youth were unaware we had.
