Fair Survey 4-H Enrollment Process How to Enroll -We will be using the 4-H Online Database for the new 4-H Year 4-H families can enroll by visiting -Enrollment will not be available until October 1 -Returning families should use the address they used for 2016 enrollment for their username -Passwords can be retrieved by clicking the "I forgot my password button" on the home page Timeline -October 1- enrollment for H Year will be open -December 1- enrollment deadline for returning 4-H families -May 1- project add deadline to be eligible to exhibit at the county fair Cloverbud Enrollment -Youth must be five or turn five by January 1, 2017 Full 4-H Membership Enrollment -Youth must be seven or turn seven by January 1, 2017 Questions about Enrollment? -Contact the Extension office National 4-H Week is October 3-9! Let us showcase the great things 4-H has to offer including all the incredible 4-H youth in the community who work each day to make a positive impact in their communities! Record Books, KAP forms and Membership Pin Applications All pin applications and KAPs must be turned into community leaders for signatures and are due to the Extension office by 5:00 pm October 3. If you have questions about completing these forms, contact your community leader or the Extension office for assistance. County Achievement Celebration Save the date! The County Achievement Celebration will be November 6 in Building 21 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. There will be a barbecue luncheon beginning at 12:30 pm with the awards ceremony to follow at 1:30 pm. Everyone is invited to attend. Watch for more details in the October newsletter.

2 4-H Ambassador Program Are you at least a freshman in high school and have been in 4-H for a minimum of two years? Do you enjoy sharing your 4-H story with others? Are you committed to growing our 4-H program? If you answered yes to the previous questions, you should consider applying to become a Douglas County 4-H Ambassador. The application process includes a written application, a written recommendation letter, an interview and a short speech. The application and recommendation are due to the Extension office by 5:00 pm on October 3. Kansas 4-H Youth Leadership Council Application Process Any Kansas 4-H member between the ages of 14 and 18 before January 1, 2017 may apply. This year's KYLF delegation will elect representatives from the four extension program areas (NE, NW, SE, SW). Youth Council members work to involve youth with K-State Research and Extension in promoting, developing, implementing and evaluating Kansas Extension 4-H Youth Development programs in order to reflect the needs and interests of youth in the state. Council members will also plan and conduct the Kansas Youth Leadership Forum, Citizenship in Action, Campference and other events. Information about the application process can be found here on the right hand side of the screen. Application and photos are due on an online form on October 1 before 5 p.m. CST and 2 letters of reference must be postmarked on or before October 1 or they may be uploaded on the application site by October 1 at 5 p.m. The signature page should be postmarked by October 1. This year the elections will include the application process detailed above, and from those applications up to 12 young people per area will be invited to interview with a panel at the beginning of KYLF. From those that interview, up to 6 candidates will be selected to be in the election. Douglas County 4-H Council Scholarship Program The Douglas County 4-H Council is excited to announce a scholarship program. The Douglas County 4-H Council Scholarship Program was established to provide financial assistance to encourage 4-H ers and adult volunteers to attend 4-H related conferences. Conference opportunities include but are not limited to: 4-H Camp, Campference, Discovery Days, KYLF, Kansas 4-H Volunteer Forum, adult trainings, etc. The funds used for this program are raised through the annual county fair 4-H concessions stand. The scholarship application is posted at under the Scholarship Application heading. Return the completed form to the Extension office at least 14 days prior to the event registration deadline. 3 Kansas 4-H Leadership Weekend -KYLF and KVF The Kansas Youth Leadership Forum and the Kansas 4-H Volunteer Forum will be held November at Rock Springs 4-H Center. KYLF is for youth ages before January 1, 2017 and KVF is for all Kansas 4-H Volunteers. KYLF will feature leadership workshops, Youth Council Elections, and opportunities to learn and have fun. The Kansas Volunteer Forum will include a workshop with the Kansas Leadership Center, opportunities for networking and sharing resources. Online Registration is available at Registration deadline is October 15 for the early bird price or by November 1 for the regular price. Payment is due to the Extension office by November 1. Checks can be made payable to the Douglas County Extension Council. A $25 processing fee will be assessed if you cancel on or before November 1. After November 1, cancellations will be assessed the full amount. **Douglas County 4-H Council Scholarships may be applied to this event.** 2016 Space Exploration and the Mars Habitat Experience The Kansas 4-H SpaceTech Program and the Kansas Cosmosphere located in Hutchinson are teaming up to provide fun, hands-on and science-based programming for Kansas 4-H Youth Development. This inaugural program will feature "Space Exploration and the Mars Habitat." The experience begins September 30, at 4 pm., and will end on October 1, 4 pm. Cost will be $100 for youth between 9-18-years old and adult participants. All youth must have a designated chaperone to attend. Registration includes three meals, two breaks, and an overnight stay. Program topics include: a tour of the Cosmosphere, "Journey to Space" movie, creating a Martian habitat, geocaching items that you will need to live on Mars, robotics design challenge with building an item you will need to survive on Mars, a star observation experience outside (weather permitting), plus much more. To register, visit: Registration will close September 18th. There will be a minimum number required or the Mars Habitat experience will be cancelled. **Douglas County 4-H Council Scholarships may be applied to this event.** Geology Fair Members of the Topeka Gem & Mineral Society invites all 4-H youth who are working on their Geology Project cases to enter their displays in a Geology Fair at the 60th Topeka Gem & Mineral Show on October 15th & 16th in the Agricultural Hall, Kansas Expocentre, 17th & Topeka Blvd, Topeka, Kansas. Judging of these displays will be done in accordance with the 4-H rules used at 4-H Fairs. Ribbons will be awarded and a trophy given to the highest scoring case in each Class. 4 2016 Kansas 4-H Dog Conference and Quiz Bowl The Kansas 4-H Dog Conference and Quiz Bowl will be October at Rock Springs 4-H Center. The theme is May the 4-H Dog Be with You. Educational sessions will include: Showmanship Dog Issues and Obedience Dog Issues, Keeping Your Dogs Safe All Year Long, Parachute Cord Lead-Making, Dog Sled Race Information, and Puppy Raisers Program. Keynote speaker s Rachel Wedel and Andy Conser will give a presentation on, What Kansas State Fair 4-H Dog Show Judges Look For. The conference will have a costume and dog talent contest, a dog job, dog skill-a-thon, quiz bowl, plus s'mores and much more. All youth must be chaperoned by a parent or 4-H leader. County groups will be housed in the same cottage and all dogs must be on leash or kenneled in your room. Owners must pick up and bag after dogs. Cost is $ for full-time participants, $65.00 for Saturday only and $45.00 for Sunday only. T-shirts and hoodies may be ordered on-line for an additional cost. No refunds will be given beginning October H Club Officer Training The Douglas County 4-H Council is hosting an Officer Training for all 4-H Club Officers on Sunday, October 23 at 4:00 pm in the Dreher Family 4-H Building. 4-H ers will further develop their leadership skills and gain knowledge about their role as a club officer and role model. Pizza will be served at the conclusion of the meeting. Please RSVP by Wednesday, October 19 to kpeine@ksu.edu or H Youth Leadership Spin Club Attention all middle school and high school 4-H ers: You are invited to join us for an 8-week Youth Leadership Program facilitated by the Lawrence Toastmaster s club. This will serve as our 4-H communication project. It will be geared for middle and high school kids and will include learning to: organize thoughts (usually with 3 points) speak sufficiently eliminate words that diminish communication listen evaluate with constructive suggestions serve in various roles rotating each meeting to allow all members to shine. Our weekly meetings will begin on Thursday, September 22nd at the Dreher Family 4-H building on the Douglas County fairgrounds. The meetings will begin at 4:00pm to be concluded shortly after 5:00pm. 5 Douglas County 4-H Council Soap Drive for the Douglas Co. Truancy Program Douglas County Youth Service (DCYS) is a Department of Douglas County, Kansas. The Truancy Program works with youth from youth in Eudora, Baldwin, Lawrence, and Perry Lecompton. DCYS partners with the University of Kansas to provide role models and mentors to encourage and support school attendance and education. Many of the youth and families that are served are in need of basic resources to assist them in being successful. We are asking for your support to help provide them with basic hygiene supplies. Please consider donating shampoo, conditioner, body wash/soap, deodorant, combs, brushes, tooth brushes, tooth paste and hair ties. We will happily accept both full-size and travel-size items. You may go to and download a flyer. Please deliver supplies to your regular monthly 4-H meeting and give them to your 4-H Council Representative. Council Representatives will deliver them to bi-monthly Council meetings to be delivered to Youth Services. The National 4-H Week Committee needs your help! Shawnee County 4-H Fall Rabbit Show The Shawnee County 4-H Bunny Bunch will be sponsoring a fall rabbit show on October 15th at Gage Park Baptist Church in Topeka.
