1 April 2017 District-wide Cloverbuds The Sunshine Makers Cloverbud Club will meet April 13th (Always the 2nd Thursday of the month) at the Paola Office from 5:30-6:30pm. Any Cloverbud is welcome to come. Cloverbuds must be 5-6 years old by Jan. 1, Jr. Leaders Meetings The next Miami County Jr. Leader Meeting will be April 10th at 7pm at the Paola Office. The next Linn County Jr. Leader Meeting will be April 16th at 4:00 pm at the Linn County 4- H Bldg. 4-H Councils The next Miami County 4-H Council Meeting will be May 8th at 8pm at the Paola Office. MARAIS DES CYGNES EXTENSION DISTRICT 4-H Newsletter 4-H Enrollment May 1st will be add/drop deadline and New Member enrollment deadline. Reminder: You must be 7 before January 1, 2017 to enroll as a 4-H Member. If you are 5-6 years old before January 1, 2017, you can enroll as a Cloverbud. Enroll Online at Participation Forms are online this year and must be completed before your enrollment is official. Volunteers Must Enroll All Screened Volunteers need to enroll in the 4-H Online system as well. Just enroll as if you are enrolling a 4-H er and then mark yourself as a volunteer. This is the way that we are tracking screened volunteers. Volunteers Enroll Online at Club Leader Meeting The next club leader meeting will be April 27th at 7:30pm. At Paola Office with conference call to Mound City Office. The program will include Financial Guidelines and picking your financial review committee. Horse Identification Certificates All Horse Identification Certificates must be in your local office on May 1st. Market Goat, Sheep, & Swine Deadlines and Tagging Dates Miami County Must be tagged by May 5th. Weigh-in and tagging will be May 5th 5:30pm- 8pm at Miami County Fairgrounds. Linn County must be tagged by May 12th. Weigh-in and tagging will be May 12th 5pm- 8pm at Linn County Fairgrounds. 3 Miami County Kansas State Fair/KJLS Nominations must be signed by an Extension Agent. You must have them signed before June 13th as we will be gone to camp. Nominations for goats, sheep and swine are due to the State by June 15th. State Events Horse: 2- and 3-Year-Old Projects Horse snaffle bit projects are due into the local Extension Office by May 1. Along with the nomination, the 4-H member must submit the Horse ID and a $10 fee. The nomination form, a copy of the horse ID (including a color picture of the horse) and fee should to be forwarded to the State 4-H Office as soon as possible, within the May 1-5 week for 2-yearold-snaffle and 3-year-olds. Three-year old snaffle bit projects must have been nominated the previous year but did not have to be shown to be renominated. State Fair entries for these projects are due August 1 in the State 4-H Office. For more information concerning the Snaffle bit project check the 4-H Horse Show Rule Book. Also note, that after May 1 the nominated horse can only be shown and ridden by the 4-H member Kansas 4-H Dog Care and Training Project Changes Periodically the Kansas 4-H Dog Care and Training Project shares changes as they affect 4-H dog shows including the Kansas State Fair 4-H Dog Show. Waldren, or dwaldren@ksu.edu Kansas State Fair 4-H Dog Show fee A $5.00 entry fee per class with a maximum of $30.00 per 4-H member will be due to the Kansas State 4-H Office with all Kansas State Fair 4-H Dog Show entries by August 15, County 4-H-sponsored dog show flyers may be posted to the Kansas 4-H web site. For directions on how to post dog show flyers and information, visit: -To see a posting of upcoming county 4-H dog shows, visit: Kansas State Fair 4-H SpaceTech Changes -GPS/GIS have been suspended for this 4-H program year due to low participation numbers. A final decision about the future of the project will be decided by October 1, Extension units may still include GPS/GIS classes in local fairs, but there will be no classes at the Kansas State Fair this year, and all references to GPS/GIS have been removed. -Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) have been added to Kansas 4-H SpaceTech for The roll out will be over a twoyear period. For , only posters, display boards and notebooks will be allowed. -There has been a major reorganization of information in the Kansas 4-H SpaceTech department. It will make the organization of SpaceTech much more readable. Previously for each project section in astronomy, computers, rockets, robotics and now unmanned aerial systems, the class numbers and information for posters, displays and notebooks were repeated in each section. To streamline the text, all of the information about posters, displays and notebooks has been pulled and inserted into a new section near of bottom of the SpaceTech with the rules and guidelines along with the specific class numbers for each section added in posters, displays and notebooks. -For more information, please contact Deryl Waldren, , or dwaldren@ksu.edu. 5 Fantastic 4-H Camp June 14-17, 2017 Rock Springs 4-H Center Junction City, KS Youth ages 8-12 Join us at Rock Springs for our four day, three night adventure. During camp you will make new friends and try new activities such as canoeing, rifles, archery, outdoor education, and arts and crafts. You ll sing songs by the campfire and make new friends. Join your friends for a fantastic summer experience!! Camp Activities: Leadership Activities Campfire Canoeing Swimming Horseback Riding Archery Environmental Education Available for 4-H ers and friends of 4-H ers who are 8-12 by Jan 1, Registration is due April 17, 2017 by midnight. 6 Position Description Position: 4 H Adult and Teen Fantastic 4 H Camp Counselors Location: Rock Spring Ranch 4 H Center (near Junction City) Date: June 14 17, 2017 Counties/Districts involved: Douglas, Frontier District, Johnson, Marais des Cygnes District, and Wyandotte Purpose: Serve as a leader, teacher, and friend for 8 youth in a small family living unit for the 4 days, 3 nights of 4 H camp. A counselor will be responsible for the overall welfare and maintenance of their group with specific concern given to the social, emotional, and physical growth of each camper. Duties and Responsibilities: Must have successfully completed the volunteer screening application process. Participate in the training at the Johnson County Extension Office on Thursday, June 8 at 6:30 p.m. Know where your campers are at all times and be present at critical times. Make sure that your campers enjoy the entire Rock Springs Experience by attending all scheduled activities and sessions. Promote a helping relationship by interacting with your living group at meal time, during camp activities and at bedtime. Create a spirit of teamwork and responsibility within the living group. Be aware of where your campers are during free time. Be aware of health, safety, and well being of your campers. Check for illness or injury. Report health problems to the camp nurses and the county agent. See that you, your living group, and fellow counselors know and observe camp rules. Help your living group follow the daily camp schedule. More specific duties of adult and teen counselors will be given at Counselor Training. Benefits of Position: All camping fees paid while at camp, excluding snacks and crafts. Counselor leadership training provided. Opportunity to work closely with other counselors and to develop lasting friendships. Be a role model for youth. Application Process: The application process includes an electronic application ( and a current volunteer screening application on file with your local Extension office by April 17, Selection: Two counselors will be selected for every 8 campers. Parents may not necessarily be placed in camp groups with their own children.

8 Chopped Clover Edition June 22, 2017 Miami County Fairgrounds Paola, KS Its time to start thinking about Chopped Clover Edition again. It is going to be like last year but with a few minor changes. For those that this is new, it is an event closely designed after the TV show chopped. We will have secret ingredients that teams will be required to use plus a pantry of about 15 items for the teams to choose from to come up with their own recipe. Then give a short presentation about their dish. This year each round will have different secret ingredients so will be able to watch other groups. Juniors will have two secret ingredients and seniors will have four. There is also going to be a contest for who can recruit the most teams/participants. Cost this year will be $15. Teams will consist of 2-4 youth and one adult helper. Not all youth need to be in 4-H.
