Be ready to roll up your sleeves and be prepared to fully immerse yourself into our three day Field to Fork Day Camp series. Campers will explore food production, harvesting, preparation, all while meeting new friends. Mark the Calendar June 28-30, 2016 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Dreher Family 4-H Building on the Douglas County Fairgrounds. On June 30 participants will be traveling on a bus to visit a local producer and a food retailer. Registration Youth ages 9-13 are welcome! Registration is only $30 for all three days. The registration fee includes all program materials, snacks and lunch. Registration is due June 15. Space is limited, sign up today by clicking HERE or visit Douglas County Fair Entries Fair entry packets have been mailed. If you have not received a packet, contact the Extension office as soon as possible. A computer is available at the Extension office for families without access to a computer. Contact the Extension office at to schedule an appointment to use the computer. Fair entries are due by 11:59 pm on June 30. Keep in mind the office closes at 5:00 p.m. on June 30. We strongly discourage families from waiting until the last minute of the last day to do their fair entries. 2 2016 County Fair Livestock Health Requirements The Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) has released the 2016 County Fair Livestock Health Requirements. These requirements are mandated by the KDA. All 4-H ers exhibiting livestock at the 2016 county fair should review the requirements prior to the fair. The document is posted at under the livestock heading. Questions regarding the requirements may be directed to Roberta Wyckoff. 4-H ers with Market Livestock- Beef, Goats, Sheep, Swine, Rabbits and Poultry All 4-H ers with market beef, goats, sheep, swine, rabbits and poultry will be required to complete detailed treatment records. The record should include administration of any dewormer, antibiotic, medicated feed, etc. The treatment record form can be found at under the livestock heading. There is an Excel spreadsheet available. The forms will be due in the fair office by 1:00 p.m., Friday, July 29 for all livestock sold through the premium auction and livestock that is shipped. Poultry Pullorum Testing All 4-H ers exhibiting Poultry at the Douglas County and/or Kansas State Fair (except for water fowl) are required to have a negative pullorum test within 90 days of the county fair. Pullorum testing will be offered Saturday, July 16 in the Poultry Barn from 7:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Please call Pam at the Extension office, , to schedule your preferred time. If you are unable to test your poultry at this time or have any questions, you may contact Kaitlyn Peine, 4-H Youth Development Agent at kpeine@ksu.edu or East Central District Horse Show The East Central District 4-H Horse Show is scheduled for July 5 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. 4-H ers who are at least 9 years old as of January 1, 2016 and have horse ID papers on file are eligible to show at the district show. 4-H ers earning a blue or purple ribbon in their respective classes will qualify to show at the Kansas State Fair 4-H Horse Show. Entry deadline for the district show is June 15. Additional information about the entry process and requirements can be found at under the horse heading. 4-H ers showing at the District Horse Show are required to complete Horse Level testing by June 15. 3 Photo Mats, Entomology Pins and Labels for County Fair Available at the Douglas County Extension Office: Photo mats $3 each; Entomology pins $4.25 Labels: Food Preservation, Food Preparation, Geology and Entomology Photo Mounting for County Fair Spray mounting of photos for the county fair will be on Monday, July 18 from 10:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Extension office. Photo mats will be available for purchase at that time. If you would like to spray mount your photos and are unable to come on July 18, please contact Nickie at or prior to that date. State Fair Entries 4-H ers who are at least 9 years old as of January 1, 2016 and who have earned a purple ribbon on their fair project(s) are eligible to enter at the Kansas State Fair. 4-H ers may make entries for all qualified projects. However, the Extension office can transport no more than two exhibits per 4-H er. Because of space limitations projects may be no larger than an entomology box. Entries can be made at the Douglas County Extension Office throughout the fair from 8 a.m. to 5:00 pm. The Extension office will also be open on Saturday, July 30 from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. to accept entries All entries must be made by 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 30. Meet and Eat Healthy Snack Distribution This year we are partnering with Harvesters to distribute free healthy snacks during the county fair. All youth, ages 18 and younger, may come to the new Meeting Hall from 3:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 26 through Friday, July 29 to receive a snack bag. *Don t forget, each club is asked to provide two (2) members to assist on their assigned day. 4-H Cloverbuds Douglas County 4-H Cloverbuds meet the third Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the Dreher Family 4-H Building located on the Douglas County Fairgrounds. Cloverbuds is an introductory program to 4-H for youth ages 5 and 6. Make sure to come check out the fun on Wednesday, June 15!

4 READING CLUB The book for the Reading Contest at the county fair was announced at the last county reading club meeting. The book is Old Yeller by Fred Gipson. Free copies are available to 4-H members on a first-come first-serve basis while supplies last at the Extension office. The Summer Space Reading program held in conjunction with the Lawrence Public Library was also announced and includes many hands-on activities and space related reading. The program will culminate with an amazing opportunity to "talk" with the International Space Station in September. A detailed flyer is on the county website along with a flyer about the Douglas County Fair Reading Contest. The next bi-annual meeting of the county-wide reading club will be September 20, at 6:30 p.m. in the Dreher Family 4-H Building. DOUGLAS COUNTY 4-H STEM TEAM A county-wide team focused on STEM is forming now that will allow you to use your leadership, communication, and science skills while working together to produce a solution to a challenge at the annual Destination Imagination competition. Fun, interactive and engaging monthly STEM activities will begin in September. In this awesome month are some special national days like National Trails Day, National Fishing and Boating Week, the Great American Backyard Campout, and National Get Outdoors Day. For more information go to is also the centennial year celebration of the National Park Service. Join me in the celebration as we enjoy our local, state and national parks, forests, lakeshores, and wildlife areas by taking a picture of yourself and/or your family enjoying the great outdoors and posting it on Instagram with the #Kansas4Hersgetoutdoors. Whether you are working on the farm, doing a 4-H project, or enjoying time with your family on vacation, join me in the fun and get outdoors! If you have any questions contact Aaron Mullen, Junior Forestry Project Leader, on Instagram LAWRENCE SUMMER FOOD PROGRAM The Lawrence Summer Food Program provides free meals Monday-Friday to all children between the ages of These meals provide essential nutrients for active, growing kids. To participate in the program all kids have to do is show up at a site. Anyone under the age of 4 must be accompanied by an adult. Adults can purchase lunch for $3.45 and breakfast for $2.15. Lunch and breakfast sites include: Hillcrest Elementary, New York Elementary and Woodlawn Elementary Schools. Lunch only sites include Broken Arrow Park, East Lawrence Recreation Center, Lawrence Public Library and South Park Gazebo.
