2 County Fair Info & Upcoming Events Fair is Upon Us As summer quickly rolls along many of us are already starting to plan for vacations and other fun activities. Don t forget to include the 2014 Riley County Fair in those plans. This year our fair theme is Party on the Prairie and is sure to capture and showcase all the exciting happenings in our portion of the state. Be a part of something wonderful taking place right here in your back yard! This year we will be hosting The Amazing Fair Race on July 26th, starting at 2:15 p.m. in Hulburt Arena. This event is designed to challenge the minds of all who participate. The race will consist of different clues, each leading to a new location around the fair grounds. The first three teams to complete the challenge will receive prizes. Teams can be made of 2-3 people, with children under the age of seven needing at least one team-member over the age of sixteen. Pre-register online at Check out all the different dates and events on the Riley County Fair website. Tuesday July 8, 12:30-2:30 p.m.: Clover Pottorf Hall/ Workshop This will be a meeting to help our youth finish up their projects before the 2014 Riley County Fair. At this meeting we will not start any new projects, but simply put the focus into completing those that are already started. Please contact Marjorie Devlin with any questions about these opportunities or to inform her that your 4-Her will be in attendance marj@ksu.edu 2

3 Four-leaf Spotlight "Forget yourself for others, and others will never forget you." Name: Marjorie Devlin Career/ Past Career: Programmer at KSU Hail Library Hobbies/ Talents: Sewing, Knitting, Gardening How long have you been involved in 4-H programming: 21 years Why do you volunteer with 4-H: I find 4-H to be a wonderful organization. It includes both boys and girls of all ages starting as early as 5 (Clover Buds) and allows a lot of mentoring between the older and younger members. There aren t many youth organizations that have this kind of participation. I volunteer because I really do believe in 4-H and it s goals for youth and I want as many kids as possible to have the 4-H experience. What do you think is the most important component to positive youth development: In my experience most important component of positive youth development is to give youth self-confidence. If a youth has confidence in themselves their opportunity for success is great. And I believe that 4-H program does help youth develop self-confidence. What has been your most rewarding or proud moment as a 4-H volunteer: I have many rewarding moments in 4-Hand and it isn't restricted to my own children's success. I loved watching the younger kids in our 4-H club give their first talk or participate in their first 4-H Gavel Games. To watch a child get up and give their first talk is so special. If you had to give advice to a new 4-H volunteer, who is just starting out, what would it be: Find your passion and don't be afraid to share it with the youth!! The rewards you get from volunteering is tremendous. If you aren t sure of where to start there are so many resources to help you out Extension publications, other 4-H volunteers and of course the Extension staff. Additional comments: 4-H includes both boys and girls of all ages starting as early as 5 (Clover Buds) and allows a lot of mentoring between the older and younger members. There aren t many youth organizations that have this kind of participation. I love one of the national 4-H slogans, The Power of YOUth. To me that slogan describes 4-H so well, despite the fact that you are a youth you have the ability to do wonderful things and that is what 4-h is all about. 3
