1 Green and Growing Jay County 4-H Newsletter June/July 2016 FAIR IS ON THE WAY! ARE YOU READY? July 9th 15th, 2016 A WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT Ding Dong the bell is tolling!!! Reminding us that the Jay County 4-H Fair is fast approaching. I hope everyone is preparing their projects. I am sure by now that you have heard that we will not have a youth extension educator at the fair this year, but rest assured that Purdue will have very capable representation at the fair to assist everyone. Local Extension educators Cheri Brown and Larry Temple will be available and have a presence at the fair as well as Extension Educators from surrounding counties will be available to answer questions that may come forth during the fair. The 4-H Fair Entry is now up and running and it will help all the volunteers and especially Della and Deb by completing your 4-H Fair Entry as soon as possible. In these times, just about everything we do, technology is taking the forefront on how we do everyday tasks. 4-H is no different in this use of technology. Almost every form of communication with 4-H is through or texting. So, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE check your for information from "4-H Online". Save 4-H Online in your IN box so that s from 4-H do not go into your spam or junk boxes. I cannot stress enough the importance of checking your s. If you still have problems receiving , please call Della for assistance. The office personnel will help you with this and in return it will help them do their tasks easier. I, along with the First Lady, look forward to seeing you all at the fair. Let's make it a Great Fair!!! Please carefully read your H Animal and non-animal Project Handbook for all exhibition rules and requirements. You and your animals well being are important! If the weather during our 4-H fair is typical, we ll be covered in heat waves. Please be sure to properly care for yourself and your animals. Be sure to have fresh water on hand, and think of ways to keep your animals cool. Several 4 -Hers will be auctioning their animal and it s a good idea to also be familiar with medication withdrawal times to insure a safe food product for consumers. While you may be aiming for a certain weight for your animal, please don t overfeed or underfeed it just to achieve your goal. A healthy animal will be more appealing to a judge any day! It s important to treat your animals in a humane way and many times that simply means having patience instead of forcefully making your animals go where you want them to go. 1:30 pm Rabbit Show East Arena Sunday, July 10 1:00 pm Beef & Beef Feeder Show Arena 1:30 pm Poultry Show East Arena 3:00 pm Horse & Pony Horse Arena Monday, July 11 8:00 am Swine Show Show Arena 3:00 pm Horse & Pony Horse Arena 4:30 pm Sheep Show Show Arena 8-10 pm Swine and Poultry released Tuesday, July 12 8:00 am Dairy Goat Show Show Arena 11:30 am Meat Goat Show Show Arena 3:00 pm Horse & Pony Horse Arena Wednesday, July 13 8:30 am Dairy Show Show Arena 9:00 am Cat Show Exhibit Hall Important Information! 6 Exploring More 4-H Information SWINE INFORMATION All swine will be tagged at check-in with RFID tags this year. These tags will cost $2 per tag. Payment will be needed when the swine is tagged. All swine loaded onto the market truck MUST have at least 1/2 inch of hair and ALL show oils washed off. If a pig is shaved that pig will go to a different packer and they will NOT be paying the market bid price. It will be a lot lower. With the new RFID tags those pigs can be tracked to the 4-H member. We did get compliments on the oils being washed off but now the packers are requiring more hair.
