3 **** Check**** Please check your that you used to set up your family profile when you joined 4-H through the 4-H Online System. If your has changed, please update this in your family profile in 4-H Online. Mini 4-H Round Up A special afternoon just for Mini 4-H members is being planned for Thursday, May 26, 1 4:30 PM. Details and registration form will be mailed to all of the Mini 4-H members. Drop / Add Date The date to drop projects or add projects is Monday, May 15th. You will need to go into your family profile in 4-H Online and add or drop the projects you wish to take. If you add a project, stop by the Extension Office to pick up any manuals or record sheets you will need. Foods Manuals Food Project Manuals Levels C and D arrived late last year. All Foods Manuals are now available and they have been distributed to 2016 Foods members. A foods workshop is being planned. Watch for details in upcoming newsletters. 4-H Foundation The Wells County 4-H Foundation will meet Tuesday, April 12, 6:30 PM at the Wells County 4-H Park. The group will begin to plan their fair activities. 4-H Association The Wells County 4-H Association will be working on fair plans and rodeo details at their future meetings on April 18 and May H Council The officers will set a date for their spring meeting. Details will be mailed to Council members. 4-H Club Reports 4-H Club financial reports were due April 1 from leaders. Forms and details were mailed out to leaders. Questions contact the Extension Office. 4-H Leaders Wells County 4-H Leaders will meet Thursday, May 12, 7 PM at the Community Center, 4-H Park, Bluffton. Updates on summer events, fair and judging events will be discussed. Rule Book The 2016 Wells County 4-H Rule Book is available at the Extension Office for $5.00. It is also on the web page at:

4 Shot Gun Club х Safety Orientation meeting on Saturday, April 16, 9 11 AM at the Wells County Gun Club, 2555 E. 400 N., Ossian.. х Meetings will continue on April 23, 30, May 7, 14, 21, 28 and June 4. х Supplies fee This project uses many clay targets and shot gun shells. This fee is $25. х Scholarships are available for membership fees and supply fees. Talk to one of the leaders or the Extension Office, х All equipment and ammo will be provided. If you have a gun, it must pass a safety inspection. х Forms to have your gun inspected can be picked up at the Extension Office or at the first meeting. х Leaders are certified to teach important safety skills. х Questions call Kevin Springer, for details. х See club flyer at wells Visit our Web Page: 4-H Camp This year s 4-H Camp will be June 6 8, 2016 at Camp Mack near Milford (north of Warsaw). Lots of fun and educational activities are being planned for youth in grades 3 6. For our Facebook search: Wells County 4-H Feel free to comment, post or like at any time! Archery Club Orientation will be held April 11, 7 8 PM at the Wells County Community Center, 4-H Park. Safety Meeting & Archery Skills Beginners April 18, 6:30 8:30 PM Advanced April 19, 6:30 8:30 PM Tentative plans are to divide the members into two groups. Beginners would meet on Monday nights and Advanced will meet Tuesday nights. We will be flexible for families with youth that might be in both. Meetings will continue through May and June and finish with the award night, June 27th. Supply fee for arrows, safety guards, etc. is $15. Scholarships are available for supply fees and membership. Talk to one of the 4-H Leaders. Leaders are certified and teach important safety skills. 5 Fair Theme Jr. Leader Happenings Fair theme ideas are still being accepted until April 25th. Submit your idea to the Extension Office. State Road 1 Construction Due to construction on State Road 1, it is recommended that you use the Spring Street (north) entrance to the 4-H Park. The construction will continue through the summer months. 4-H Project Supplies х х х х Jr. Leader Meeting Our next meeting will be Wednesday, April 27, 6:30 8 PM at the 4-H Park. Bring a box of cereal or can of fruit to donate to the backpack program. We will discuss summer plans and the Mini 4-H Round-Up. Some Jr. Leaders are needed to stuff goodie bags on Tuesday, April 12, 4 5 PM at the Community Center, 4-H Park, Bluffton. The bags will be for the 450 4th grade students that will attend the April 13 Ag Day event at the 4-H Park. Thank you to the Jr. Leaders who helped teach dental health to 1st grades at the Kids Health Fair. Thank you to the Jr. Leaders who helped at the Pork Chop Dinner to help raise funds for the new restroom building. We have the following items for sale in the Extension Office: Foam Core Boards (22 x 28 ) $ Poster Sleeves (plastic covers) $ 1 Salon Print Sleeves $ 1 Electric Kits Troublelight $ 30 Shake lights $ 15 Extension Cord $ 13 What is Junior Leaders? Jr. Leaders is a County 4-H Club which helps with various county 4-H events and builds leadership in teen members. The club did several community service projects last year that included: adopted Christmas Family; sponsored the 4-H Poland Exchange; provided food for the 4-H Fair Clean Up Day; packed food for the Kids Weekend Backpack; provided 4-H pencils to Mini 4-H members and Ag Day 4th graders. Members volunteer to work in the Jr. Leader Food Booth at the Fair. You can still add Jr. Leaders by going to your profile on 4-H Online. 6 4-H Purdue This educational trip was formerly known as 4-H Science Workshops. The event will be held June 8 10 at Purdue. Youth in grades 9 and above may sign up for one of these options: Food Animal 1 (beef, dairy, sheep, goat) Food Animal 2 (swine, poultry, rabbit) Horse & Companion Animal (horse, dog, cat, llama, zoo animals) Animal Products Animal Health Animal Bio-Science Citizenship in 4-H: Start Local.Go Global Exploring Health Careers Food Science & Nutrition Plant Sciences Renewable Energy Show Me the Money consumerism, financial Management Spread the News journalism, photography Computer Science Electric Engineering Robotics Science of Flight aerospace Wells County youth pay $65 towards the cost of the trip. The remainder is sponsored by Wells County 4-H. Contact the Extension Office, if interested. Details and link for more information is located at: Youth Choral Workshop 2016 Youth Choral Music Workshop is a four day workshop which concludes with a performance at 4-H Youth Round-Up, June 22nd, Loeb Center Purdue University campus. This year s event will be held June at Purdue and the group will also meet August at the Indiana State Fair for a performance. Wells County 4-H members interested in participating should pay $75. The remainder of the registration will be sponsored. To sign up, log into 4-H Online and register in the event section. Contact the Extension Office after you have enrolled. Registration is due April 15. Visit the Indiana 4-H Web page for more details. 4-H Band Workshop Youth entering high school through your final year in 4-H may participate. The dates are June at Purdue University with a public performance at Loeb Playhouse at 4-H Round- Up, June 20 at 6:30 PM. To sign up for the workshop, log into 4-H Online and register in the event section. Wells County 4-H will pay a portion of your fee. Members pay $50. Contact the Extension Office after you have enrolled. Registration is due April 15th. Visit the Indiana 4-H web page for more details.

7 Animal Project News Animal Lease Forms Animal lease forms are allowed in Horse & Pony, Dairy, Alpaca & Llama. These forms should be turned in at the County Extension Office by May 15th. Lease forms are available at the Extension Office or on the web page at Dairy Feeder ID Day April :30 AM Multi-Purpose Building 4-H Park, Bluffton х Enter the park off of Spring Street, х Calves can weigh up to 235 lbs. at the ID Day. х We will have a veterinarian at the event if you wish to take care of health needs of your animal. х Remember to identify your animals in 4-H Online. Beef & Dairy Beef Members Thank you for coming to the 4-H Beef / Dairy Beef ID Days in February and March. Also, thanks for entering your animal ID info into the 4-H Online system. Port-A-Pit Chicken BBQ Fund Raiser Support the 4-H Horse & Pony Club at this event on Saturday, April 16, 11 AM 2 PM at Bluffton Wal-Mart parking lot. Sheep and Goat ID Day April AM Multi-Purpose Building 4-H Park, Bluffton Complete details will be mailed to members. Rabbit Workshop Monday, May 9 7 8:30 PM Wells County Community Center, 4-H Park Next Workshop: June 6th Premise ID Number The animal identification with the 4-H Online system requests a Premise ID number for all cattle, swine, sheep, and goats. This number is assigned to a farm location almost like an address. If your form does not have an ID you can get the number from the Indiana Board of Animal Health at or by at If you house your animals at another location, check with the property owner for the Premise ID number. The numbers are only needed for cattle, swine, sheep and goats.

8 Animal Project News Born & Raised in Wells County Wells County will again offer classes or recognition at shows of livestock that are born and raised in Wells County. These projects include: Beef, Goat, Sheep, and Swine. When you enter your animal ID information into the 4-H Online system, be sure to mark born and raised. If you do not have internet access, stop by the Extension Office by the May 15th deadline and bring all your animal information. Horse & Pony Vaccination Day Required vaccinations are being offered to 4-H members by a local equine vet. The event will be Saturday, April 9, 9:30 11:30 AM at the Horse Barn. Cost is $40 per animal. Rabies vaccinations are also available for $5.50. Please make your reservations at: http// wellsco4hhorseandpony PQA for Swine Members 4-H Swine members must be PQA (Pork Quality Assurance) certified in order to sell your project through 4-H. Details about workshops in Wells and surrounding counties will be finalized soon. You can become certified by attending a workshop. Watch for details in the next newsletter. Poultry & Rabbit Members Poultry and Rabbit will again be using paper forms to indicate animals and birds that you plan to exhibit. (The 4-H Online system does not haven an ID option for these two projects.) Your Poultry & Rabbit enrollment forms will be mailed to you in April and are due May 15th at the Extension Office. Your Livestock Record Sheet will also be mailed to you at the same time. If you are having your vaccinations done by another vet, make sure that you complete the 4-H Horse & Pony Vaccination Form (4-H 1031w). Vaccinations and the vaccination form are needed before you can bring your animal to the 4-H Park for your first meeting. Poultry Workshops A 4-H Poultry Workshop will be held Thursday, April 7 and Thursday, May 12 at 7 PM at the Community Center at the 4-H Park in Bluffton. Topics will include: when to order your chicks to have the right size of broilers and roasters; breed classification what makes chickens a specific breed, feeding tips for your birds.

9 Animal Project News Livestock Arena Repair Repairs are being made this spring to the 4-H Livestock Show Arena. Some of the posts have become unstable due to moisture and age. Animal Resource Books If you are enrolled in Beef, Dairy, Sheep, Swine, Goat, Rabbit, or Horse & Pony, you will want to purchase one of these books. Each member in your family does NOT need a book. We suggest one book per family. Local libraries also have these for loan or a resource at the library. Answers to the questions on your project sheet will come from the book. Cost of the books are: Alpaca / Llama $ 17 Beef: $ 14 Cat $ 16 Dairy $ 11 Dog $ 20 Goat: $ 17 Horse & Pony $ 20 Rabbit $ 12 Sheep: $ 15 Swine: $ 14 Stop by the Extension Office Monday through Friday from 8 AM 4:30 PM to purchase your copy. We will also have them for sale at the ID Day and workshops. Swine Exhibitors for State Fair State Fair 4-H swine exhibitors are once again required to collect hair (DNA) samples from their animals and turn them into the Extension Office by May 15th in the special envelope that will be provided. Part of this process is that you must also record the animal s RFID tag on the envelope. The Extension Office now has the envelopes and tags for you to pick up. Online entry for the State Fair is open and swine are due June 1st. Meat Processing If you are planning to take an animal to Lengerich s or Manley s for processing after the 4-H Fair, please give them a call to schedule a time. With all the area fairs happening at approximately the same time, they need to plan accordingly. Horse & Pony Members Remember to identify your animals in the 4-H Online system. You will need to include a digital photo. If you have questions, contact your leaders.

All pigs in the same litter must have the same ear notches in this ear. The right ear is on the pigs own right. Individual Pig Mark (Left Ear) The left ear is used for notches to show individual pig number in the litter. Each pig will have different notches in this ear When listing (or reading) ear notches, the litter number is listed first and the individual pig number is listed second. This pig is out of litter #28. You will need to enter Swine ID into 4-H Online at wells
