2 Weather Cancellation Policy All county-wide 4-H meetings will be cancelled any time Norwell, Bluffton and / or Southern Wells School Corporations close due to weather. If schools are closed due to fog in the morning but it burns off during the day, you should check with your leader and find out the status of your meeting. Lots of fun and educational activities are being planned for youth in grades 3 6. Application and details will be mailed in April to all 4-H members in grades 3 6. Space is limited so apply early. Volunteers Opportunities In order to have a 4-H Program, we need caring and interested adults that are willing to volunteer their time and talents. Contact the Extension Office, if you would like to volunteer. Here are some positions where we need assistance. Shooting Sports Leaders The next State Training to become certified is March 31 April 2 at Ross Camp near Lafayette. This would be for BB & Rifle; Shot Gun; Archery and Outdoor Pursuits. 4-H Association Volunteers to help plan and organize the annual 4-H Fair. Several open positions. Group meets monthly on the 3rd Monday at 7 PM. 4-H Foundation Volunteers assist with the Bounce House, Face Painting, and Kids Games at the Fair. Proceeds help to fund 4-H scholarships. 4-H 5K Fun Run / Walk will be held on Saturday, July 15. Helpers are needed along the route and to collect tags and hand out water. 4-H Foundation The Wells County 4-H Foundation will meet Tuesday, April 18, 6:30 PM at the Wells County 4-H Park. The group will begin to plan their fair activities. Purdue Spring Fest April 8 & 9 Horticulture Show Vet School Open House Bug Bowl Boiler Barnyard Science Outreach Showcase Purdue Engineering: Envision Events 10 AM 4 PM each day For complete details, go to: springfest or call 888-EXT-INFO. 4-H Association The Wells County 4-H Association will be working on fair plans and schedule at their upcoming meetings on March 20 & April H Club Reports 4-H Club Leaders are reminded that your 2016 Club Financial Reports are due April 3rd. Complete details will be mailed to all club leaders. 4-H Club Leaders The Wells County 4-H Club Leaders will meet Tuesday, May 2, 7 PM at the Extension Office Conference Room 4-H Council Our next meeting will be March 16, 7 PM at the Wells County Public Library, Bluffton. * Please note the change in location.

4 Attend the 4-H Pork Chop Dinner for New Restroom Sunday, March AM 1 PM Cost: $8 Advanced $10 at the door Wells County Community Center Proceeds to the new Restroom Facility Tickets available at the Wells County Extension Office. The restroom is under construction and will be ready for summer! Volunteers are needed to help with the Pork Chop Fund Raiser. We need donated desserts, servers, and set up crew. Pancake & Sausage Breakfast Fund Raiser Saturday, April :30 AM Wells County Community Center $6 All You Can Eat Pancakes All proceeds will go to the 4-H Park Log Cabin Restoration Project and the Ouabache State Park Fire Tower Project. 4-H Judges & Volunteer Workshop Monday, March 13 Check in 6 PM Program 6:30 8:45 PM Current and prospective judges, adult leaders and Jr Leaders are encourage to attend. Learn more about judging 4-H projects and the philosophy of judging. Learn how to work with volunteers to have a successful judging day. Break out sessions will include: Foods, Natural Resources, Posters, and Garden/ Floriculture. Call the Extension Office, by March 9 to reserve a seat. Swine Project Workshop Livestock Resource Books If you are enrolled in Beef, Dairy, Sheep, Swine, Goat, Rabbit, or Horse & Pony, you will want to purchase one of these books. Each member in your family does NOT need a book. We suggest one book per family. Local libraries also have these for loan or a resource at the library. Answers to the questions on your project sheet will come from the book. Cost of the books are: Saturday, March 11 9:30 11 AM Livestock Show Arena Topics include: Selecting pigs for 4-H; What does a good pig look like; proper nutrition, VFD and Premise ID. Animal Project News Indiana Dairy Youth Conference 4-H Dairy families are invited to the 13th annual Indiana Dairy Conference, Saturday, April 8th, 10:30 AM 3:30 PM at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds in Noblesville. Participants will learn about biosecurity, milking, disease, nutrition and more as they network with other dairy-friendly people! Registration is $15 per person. Please submit a registration form by March 31st. The cost includes a t-shirt, admission, breaks, meals, and handouts. Poultry Workshop Thursday, March 9 5:30 6:30 PM Community Center, Topics: Poultry Selection, Getting Started in Poultry, and Feeding Tips. 5 Animal Project News Fair Theme Jr. Leader Happenings Born & Raised in Wells County Wells County will again offer classes or recognition at shows of livestock that are born and raised in Wells County. These projects include: Beef, Goat, Sheep, and Swine. When you enter your animal ID information into the 4-H Online system, be sure to mark born and raised. If you do not have internet access, stop by the Extension Office by the May 15th deadline and bring all your animal information. Horse & Pony Vaccination Day Wells County 4-H Horse & Pony will hold a Vaccination Day, Saturday, April 15, 9 11 AM at the 4-H Park in Bluffton. The vaccination will meet all of the exhibition requirements for 4-H in Indiana. Reservations are required and can be reserved by going to the clubs web page at: wellsco4hhorseandpony.webs.com Additional vaccines can be purchased but you need to indicate what additional shots you need. Prices are listed on the Horse & Pony Web Page. If you are having your vaccinations done by another vet, make sure that you complete the 4-H Horse & Pony Vaccination Form (4-H 1031w). Vaccinations and the vaccination form are needed before you can bring your animal to the 4-H Park for your first meeting. Poultry & Rabbit Members Poultry and Rabbit will again be using paper forms to indicate animals and birds that you plan to exhibit. (The 4-H Online system does not haven an ID option for these two projects.) Your Poultry & Rabbit enrollment forms will be mailed to you in early April and are due May 15th at the Extension Office. Your Livestock Record Sheet will also be mailed to you at the same time. PQA for Swine Members 4-H Swine members must be PQA (Pork Quality Assurance) certified in order to sell your project through 4-H. Details about workshops in Wells and surrounding counties will be finalized soon. You can become certified by attending a workshop. Watch for details in the next newsletter. Dog Club We have one person who has expressed an interest to help with the club. However, we still need another person to help. If we do not get enough volunteers to help, we may not offer the Dog Obedience project for Please contact the Extension Office by March 24 if you know of someone who can help with the club. Fair theme ideas are still being accepted until April 2nd. Submit your idea to the Extension Office. State Fair Exhibit Workers Needed Each summer 60 youth are hired to work at the State 4-H Exhibit Hall and Ag/Horticulture Building. Exhibit Hall workers must be a minimum of 14 years of age to college age young adults. Applications are available at the Extension Office or can be ed to you. The deadline to submit is April 1st. Junior Leaders Our next business meeting will be Thursday, April 6, 6:30 8 PM at the Community Center at the 4-H Park in Bluffton. We will elect officers for 2017 at this meeting. 4-H Project Supplies We have the following items for sale in the Extension Office: Foam Core Boards (22 x 28 ) $ Poster Sleeves (plastic covers) $ 1 Salon Print Sleeves $ 1 Electric Kits Troublelight $ 30 Shake lights $ 15 Extension Cord $ 13 Thank you to those Jr. Leaders who helped with the New Family Orientation by organizing games and recreation. On March 12, we will need volunteers to help at the 4-H Pork Chop Dinner. The sign up link is on or call Kent Ulmer, March 27, 10 AM 2 PM. Jr. Leaders will meet at the 4-H Park to inventory food for the Backpack Program and assemble Rule Books. Jr. Leaders will once again teach a mini session (3 minutes) on dental health at the Kids Health & Safety Fair on April 4 & 5. We will need at least 2 people for the AM and PM session each day. Call the Extension Office, if you would like to help. April 11, 4 PM. Volunteers are needed to fill 450 Ag Tour goodie bags with items. Meeting in the Community Center Expo Hall. What is Junior Leaders? Jr. Leaders is a County 4-H Club which helps with various county 4-H events and builds leadership in teen members. The club did several community service projects last year that included: adopted Christmas Family; sponsored the 4-H Poland Exchange; provided food for the 4-H Fair Clean Up Day; packed food for the Kids Weekend Backpack; provided 4-H pencils to Mini 4-H members and Ag Day 4th graders. Members volunteer to work in the Jr. Leader Food Booth at the Fair. You can still add Jr. Leaders by going to your profile on 4-H Online. Youth As Resources Grants 4-H Clubs and other youth groups can apply for a grant from Youth As Resources of Wells County to do a community service project. Grants up to $500 are available. Go to: fcs-inc.net Form is due March 28. The Youth Choral Music Workshop is open to any youth entering high school or currently in high school who wants to participate in an intensive, dynamic. Challenging and fun filled singing, dancing and performance orientated workshop. You will make new friends and work with some of the best music and performance teachers and staff in Indiana Youth Choral Music Workshop is a four day workshop which concludes with a performance at 4-H Youth Round-Up, June 27th, Loeb Center Purdue University campus. This year s event will be held June at Purdue and the group will also meet August at the Indiana State Fair for a performance. Wells County 4-H members interested in participating should pay $75. The remainder of the registration will be sponsored. Contact the Extension Office for more information. Applications are due April 15th and can be found at 4-H Band Workshop Youth entering high school through your final year in 4-H may participate. The dates are June at Purdue University with a public performance at Loeb Playhouse at 4-H Round-Up, June 26 at 6:30 PM. Wells County 4-H members interested in participating should pay $50. The remainder of the registration will be sponsored. Contact the Extension Office for more information. Applications are due April 15th and can be found at Animal Lease Forms Animal lease forms are allowed in Horse & Pony, Dairy, Alpaca & Llama. These forms should be turned in at the County Extension Office by May 15th. Lease forms are available at the Extension Office or on the web page at Dairy Feeder ID Day April :30 AM Multi-Purpose Building Calves can weigh up to 250 lbs. at the ID Day. NOTE: This is a change from last Year s 235 lbs. Sheep and Goat ID Day May AM Multi-Purpose Building Complete details will be mailed to members in April. Horse & Pony Members Remember to identify your animals in the 4-H Online system. You will need to include a digital photo. If you have questions, contact your leaders. Beef & Dairy Beef Members Thank you to all of the members for bringing your animals to our 4-H Beef / Dairy Beef ID Day in February. Be sure to enter your animal ID info into the 4-H Online system by our county deadline of March 20. The animals are not officially signed up until this is completed. Contact the Extension Office if you need assistance. Rabbit Workshop Monday, March 13 7PM Wells County Community Center, 4-H Park This will be a question and answer session. Premise ID Number The animal identification with the 4-H Online system requests a Premise ID number for all cattle, swine, sheep, and goats. This number is assigned to a farm location almost like an address. If your form does not have an ID you can get the number from the Indiana Board of Animal Health at or by at If you house your animals at another location, check with the property owner for the Premise ID number. The numbers are only needed for cattle, swine, sheep and goats.
