1 News You Need to Know: June/July 2016 All 4-H Families- Now is the time to carefully check the project judging schedule pages of your H Handbook! Please make sure you have marked the day(s) your project(s) will be judged! All 4-H members grades 3-12 should recently have received an envelope containing an important letter, general project tags and project list (please check for accuracy!), and one (per family) Shelby County Fair pass. If you have not received this envelope, contact the extension office immediately! 4-H Project and Premium Money Pick Up-Monday, July 11, 5-7 p.m.-this is the only time premium money will be available for general and livestock projects. You may arrange for someone else to pick up and sign for your money and project. Premium money not picked up on July 11 will be forfeited! Green Indiana 4-H Club Member s Record Books are due NO LATER THAN 4 p.m., Wednesday, June 29 (this is before the county fair)!! You may also bring your Green Record Book with you to judging on Monday, June 27 and turn it in at that time. Missing books and/or record sheets will result in the loss of premiums and, possibly, your year in 4-H. My Record of 4-H Achievement instructions and help can be found on page 195 of the 2016 Handbook. A project record sheet is required for completion on EACH project in which you have enrolled. Make sure you fill out BOTH front and back of each record sheet. 4-H Advisory Council Election-Voting will once again be held during the fair. Ballots will be at the 4-H building. Each 4-H Family will have one vote (4-H Families defined as those having at least one child, grades 3-12, enrolled in 2016 Shelby County 4-H or having a family member who is a 2016 approved Shelby County 4-H Adult Volunteer). Further information on voting will be available at the fairgrounds. Vote and make your voice heard! All poster projects and notebooks must include a reference list indicating where information was obtained,. This is mandatory for completing the exhibit. Please see page 58 of the 2016 Handbook for details. The Shelby County Extension Office will be closed on Monday, July 4 in recognition of Independence Day. If you win an award at the fair, you will receive a Thank You note to be sent to the award sponsor. Make sure you write a personal message of thanks and put the card in the mail! 4-H Livestock/Animal Exhibitors- Beef Show Change!- The 4-H Beef show will begin at 5:30 p.m. (following the Mini 4-H Frog Jumping Contest). Livestock Pen Set Up is Thursday, June 23 at 6 p.m. 4-H Cat Cage Decorating theme for Careers
2 URGENT Poultry News!-Poultry Blood testing for will be held on Monday, June 20 at the fairgrounds poultry barns from 6:30-8:30 p.m. If you have purchased birds from Rural King or a Hatchery, please contact 4-H Poultry Superintendent. Merrill Storm. Poultry cage set up is Thursday, June 23 at 5 p.m. CHANGE of Goat Superintendent name and phone number: JR New is the 4-H Goat Superintendent and can be reached at Please make a note of this change in your handbook. Swine exhibitors in the 2016 Shelby County Fair must be PQA certified. This is a health and safety directive and will be enforced. THIS INCLUDES OWNERS OF ANIMALS RETURNING TO THE FARM WITH THEIR OWNERS AS WELL AS SALE ANIMALS. If you missed our county training on June 2, you may certify online by going to and selecting the Certification tab. 4-H Horse and Pony Hunter Hack Qualifications will be held on June 6 and June 20, both dates at the Shelby County Fairgrounds Horse arena at 6 p.m. Mini 4-H Members: All Mini 4-H members exhibiting animals must have a Liability Release Form on file in our office. This form is available in your Mini 4-H Handbook and in our office. We still have some openings for Mini 4-H Camp! The application is in your 2016 Mini 4-H Handbook at Mini 4-H Dates To Remember! Please check the inside page of your 2016 Mini 4-H Handbook for your project judging schedule. The week prior to and of the fair will be very busy and we don t want you to be left out of the fun! Mini 4-H Fashion Revue will be on Wednesday, June 29 with judging at 12:30 p.m. and the Fashion Show at 7:00 p.m. Mini 4-H General Project judging will be on Saturday, July 2 from 9-11 a.m. at the Fairgrounds Mini 4-H Livestock Show will be on July 4 beginning at 3 p.m. at the livestock barns. Mini 4-H Frog Jumping Contest will be on July 4 beginning at 5 p.m. at the livestock arena. Mini 4-H Rabbit Show will be July 7 beginning at 10 a.m. at the livestock barns. Mini 4-H Project Pick Up will be on Monday, July 11 from 5-7 p.m. No premiums are paid on Mini projects, but ribbons will be sent home with the projects. 4-H Junior Leaders- Fair Clean-up will be June 25. Be at the fairgrounds at 9:00 a.m. wide awake and ready to work! Jr. Leader Activities at the Fair- 1. Food drive: Collecting non-perishable food items for distribution to local pantries 2. Photo sales-pictures will be taken during fair events and offered for sale. Please remember to help promote these activities to your friends and families!
3 4-H Adult Volunteers- Congratulations to our 2016 Tenured Volunteers! Bill Claytor and Keith Meltzer have achieved 20 years, Merrill Storm has 25 years, Danny Robinson has 30 years and Darrell Linville has 45 years with Shelby County 4-H. Thank you to these volunteers who have dedicated so many years to the youth of Shelby County! Club and Project lists are available through your 4HOnline Leader Profile. Login to your Family Profile and chose the option to login as a volunteer. Select your name, select a club or project, and enter the password you were given last year. Feel free to contact our office if you have questions. Are you interested in serving or know that perfect leader who would be excellent to serve on the Shelby County 4-H Advisory Council? Then be sure to nominate them to become part of the 4-H Advisory Council. This is a council that helps promote the 4-H program. We meet every other month and help with various events that make our program here a success! Any questions or want to nominate a leader please contact Gregg Spegal at (317) or Becky Schonfeld at (317) We are taking assignments for monitoring the buildings during the fair as well as working in the food booth back by the livestock barns. Please go to (building monitoring) and (food booth) to choose your preferred times. Judges Helpers Needed! Please consider being an adult volunteer on judging days. Go to the following website judging to select your spot. News You Might Like to Know: Key Club Awards The Indiana 4-H Key Club Award is sponsored by the Indiana 4-H Foundation and recognizes youth for participation in club, county, area, and state events. Youth qualifying for this award are typically in their ninth or tenth year of 4-H. Applications are due June 15th. Youth must complete their application through their 4HOnine account. Attention 4-H Garden Exhibitors: The new Suggested 4-H Garden Exhibits (970W) is available in the office and on the Shelby County Extension website. Click on Youth, Projects, Garden Updates. 4-H Foods Auction Night- Saturday, July 2, 2016 at 5:00 p.m., Livestock Arena. If you are a foods or microwave exhibitor and wish to participate, you MUST sign up at foods check in! 4-H Foods and Microwave project members putting food in the auction: if your exhibit calls for a specific number of food items to be presented at judging (such as 6 pieces of fudge, three cookies, three muffins, etc) you should bring extras to add to your auction plate. Remember, the judge will most likely consume at least one of your items in the judging process and your food auction buyer would appreciate a full plate. 4-H Hot Dog Feed and Awards Program-July 7, Food from 4-5 p.m. Awards presented at 4:30 p.m. Both activities will be at the Livestock Barns area. No Hot Dog Feed tickets are required.
4 Shelby County Royal Showmanship Competition Wednesday, July 6, 7:30 p.m. All Shelby County offices will be closed on July 4. This includes the extension office. Kits and items for some 4-H projects are available for purchase at the extension office. Poster board is $2.50, plastic poster sleeves are.50 each, electric kits run from $3 to $30 depending on the level of your exhibit and entomology kits (not boxes) for $5.50. Other items may be available upon request. Public Speaking/Demonstration Contest Thursday, June 23, 6 p.m. at the extension office. Registration deadline is June 20. Looking for good food at the Fair? Check out the 4-H Café located back by the livestock barns! The proceeds go toward 4-H Youth programming in Shelby County. Photos and Food Drive! Support Shelby County Junior Leaders at the Fair! Our Jr. Leaders will be at the fair taking photos which you can purchase and collecting non-perishables in a food drive to benefit local food pantries. Make it With Wool Contest August 7, 2016 All entries must be made from 100% wool or wool blend (minimum 60% wool or specialty wool fiber) for each fashion fabric or yarn used. Wool samples are tested by a lab prior to the contest. Specialty wool fibers include mohair, cashmere, alpaca, camel, llama and vicuna. To be eligible, a garment must have been completed after January 1, Deadline for entry is July 1, More details and the entry form are available on our website at: Community Service Opportunity! Help out the Healthy Shelby County Committee by volunteering at the event on Saturday, July 9 from 7a.m. to 1 p.m. Contact Sandy Hall at for more information. Fair Evaluation Meeting-August 24, 2016 beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the extension office. Rule Changes and Suggestion Forms is available in this publication and on our web site at Please read the form carefully. We value your ideas for improving our program and we want your suggestions for implementing those ideas. The due date for the suggestion form is 4 p.m. August 17. Project workshops scheduled: Cat- June 16 Both Mini 4-H and traditional 4-H will meet at the Family Arts Building at 7:00 p.m. Contact 4-H Cat Superintendent Lori Vardaman for details. Livestock Showmanship Workshop-June 18 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Open to new and returning showman! Species covered are beef cattle, meat goat, dairy goat, swine and sheep. Dog Workshops-Every Tuesday night from 6-8 p.m. At the livestock barns. Vet slips must be submitted before dogs are allowed to participate! 5 Photography-June 3 (bring your camera) and June 21 (prejudging. Bring posterboards, prints, etc), 6:00 p.m. at the Extension Office Swine Sunday, July 3 in the livestock arena. The workshop will begin after all Species have completed their weigh-ins. Mini 4-H Swine members are invited to attend this workshop to help prepare for the Mini 4-H Swine Show on July 4. We wish all of them a fantastic future! 2016 Farm Bureau Tenure Awards winners are Josh Kirby and Katie Settles. Congratulations on10 years of hard work in 4-H! 4-H Camp Shakamak Counselors for 2016 are: Leah Cruea, Kati Daulton, Kelli McGovern, Luke Schonfeld, Cameron Spegal. The 2016 Legacy Project will be seen in the 4-H Building. As you are admiring all the great 4-H projects, check out the beautiful new display cases! Shelby County 4-H Junior Leaders prepare for their duties as 4-H Camp Counselors at a training here at the extension office. New this year! The junior leaders are going to be taking pictures at various 4-H functions including during the fair! You will have the opportunity to purchase these pictures from them during the fair. They will be located back at the livestock barns. Feel free to ask a junior leader more information. They are working really hard to capture all the memories they can for this 4-H year so if you see them out taking tons of pictures you know why!
