5 Animal Project News Attention Livestock Members On January 1st some drugs used in livestock feed and water now require a veterinary feed directive (VFD). What is VFD? It is a written statement from a licensed veterinarian authorizing the use of a VFD drug in or on animal feed. This form (like a prescription) on paper or electronically must be provided to the feed manufacturer or supplier to obtain your VFD feed. Why the change? Over the past several years, the FDA has taken important steps toward fundamental change in how medically important antibiotics can be legally used in feed or water for food producing animals. Now, the agency is moving to eliminate the use of such drugs for production purposes (i.e., growth production and feed efficiency) and bring their remaining therapeutic uses in feed and water under the supervision of licensed veterinarians. What does this mean for 4-H? A 4-H family will need to get a VFD in order to purchase medicated feeds, milk replacers, etc from their feed mill or store. (Not all feed stores will be stocking these feeds now that they must check VFD s.) Your Premise ID will be one of the things needed to get a VFD. To learn more check out this web page: for links to YouTube videos on the topic. Animal Forms Due April 13 Beef Steers & Dairy Beef Steers Deadline to complete Animal ID in 4-H Online. May 15 Deadline for Swine, Sheep, Goats, Llamas, Alpacas, Dairy, Dairy Feeder Calf, Horse & Pony, and Beef Breeding Heifers to complete Animal ID in 4-H Online. Rabbit and Poultry will complete a paper form. Forms are due May 15th. Livestock Premise ID 4-H Livestock members with cattle, swine, sheep and goats need to have a Premise ID. This number is assigned to a farm location almost like an address. If your farm does not have an ID you can get the number from the Indiana Board of Animal Health at or by at www,in.gov/boah If you house your animals at another location, check with the property owner for the Premise ID number. The numbers are only needed for cattle, swine, sheep & goats. Your Premise ID will be needed for: * To obtain a Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) * Your 4-H Online Animal Enrollment * If you exhibit at the State Fair.
