3 PAGE 3 Livestock News! Beef and Dairy Beef Animal ID (Tagging) Days Friday, February 24, 6-8 pm and Saturday, February 25, 9-10 am Jennings County Fairgrounds ALL market steers (beef and dairy beef) and commercial/non-registered heifers must attend one of the Animal ID days. Animal ID worksheets, requirements and 4HOnline instructions will be mailed (after January 15) to 4-H members enrolled in the beef and dairy projects. 4HOnline instructions for Beef and Dairy Beef ID are included in this newsletter. Please read the instructions! Some of the animal names/ categories were changed in 4HOnline for this year. If you do NOT receive this information in the mail, contact the Extension Office. A completed worksheet MUST be brought to Animal ID Day. CHANGES! Please note: Beef and Dairy Beef Steer information must be entered into 4HOnline no later than April 3 this year. The state made this date change after our handbook changes were made. The April 1 deadline is listed in the handbook and on the triplicate Animal ID forms we already own. We will abide by the April 3 deadline this year for Beef and Dairy Beef steers being entered into 4HOnline. All other animal/species Animal ID information, except poultry and rabbit, must be entered into 4HOnline by May 15th. Also, the option to enter Beef and Dairy Beef Feeder Calves will not open in 4HOnline until April 4. You will have to wait until April 4th to enter your feeder calves. The state is doing this so members do not accidentally enter their calves as finished steers in 4HOnliine. Premise ID Registering your premises may be done online, at no charge, and takes only about 5 minutes. Visit the Indiana State Board of Animal Health s (BOAH) website: Please get your Premise ID number prior to tagging day! To verify your premises ID, contact BOAH at animalid@boah.in.gov. 6 PAGE 6 Family Fun Activities! Heathy Snack for the New Year: Apple Sandwiches 1 tablespoon rolled oats 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon 3 tablespoons unsweetened peanut butter 3/4 teaspoon honey 1 tablespoon raisins 1 medium apple Combine the oats and cinnamon in a dry skillet over medium heat and toast, stirring occasionally, until the oats are golden. Cool before using. Mix together the peanut butter and honey. Core and slice the apple into 6 rounds. (If you don't have an apple corer, you can slice the apple first and then cut out the centers with a small cookie cutter or knife.) Spread 1 tablespoon of peanut butter on 3 of the apple slices and sprinkle with raisins and oats. Top with the remaining apple slices to form sandwiches. Notes: If you are not eating the apple right away, you can brush it with lemon juice to prevent browning. A solution of 1/4 cup water and 1 tablespoon lemon juice does the trick without tasting too lemony. 4-H T-shirt Design Contest Open to 4-H members, family, volunteers and 4-H Clubs! The 4-H Council is hosting a 4-H t-shirt design contest for the 2017 Jennings County 4-H t-shirt that will be distributed to all 4-H members. You may create your own original theme or slogan or you may use the current theme Grow True Leaders. Feel free to work on this together with family members or as a club unit. You may draw your design or create it with a computer program. Please submit your artwork/design along with your name(s) and phone number to the Extension Office by February 24.
