2 Sale Order Goats Beef Hogs Sheep Because the facilities are limited, the livestock show will be successful only if every leader and parent lends a hand in the operation of the livestock activity. REGISTRATION The 4-H er must be enrolled in the project to participate at fair. Registration is due in the Extension office by Sunday, June 1 st. Sale order will be drawn in the Extension office after registration deadline. Late registrations will be dropped in the sales order to last position. All market steers shall be born after January 1 of the year prior to the show. All market swine, market sheep and spring calves shall be born after January 1 of the current year. All animals must be in the member s possession by March 1 of this year for Steers, and by May 1 of this year for Sheep, Goats and Swine. 4-H members enrolled in the beef or dairy project may enter an animal in the spring calf class. This animal must not be shown in another class (lot). Calves will be split into beef category and dairy category. Possession for 4H ers with animals who do not have the proper facilities but wish to participate in a 4H project are allowed to do so as long as they can provide a completed record book (provided at weigh-ffin date) from May 4, 2014 to July 10, ANIMAL CARE AND MANAGEMENT All animal owners are responsible for the welfare of their animals. Exhibitors are expected to provide adequate feed, water, bedding and housing for the comfort of their animals. It is the responsibility of the exhibitor to make arrangements for appropriate care if they are unable to be present. We encourage the humane treatment of animals; abuse will not be tolerated. The comfort and safety of the animal must be addressed throughout the show. Non stressed animals will perform better for the handler. Exhibitors are expected to handle their animals in a gentle and calm manner and not create undue excitement in the vicinity of other livestock and persons. The use of tranquilizers on animals is not allowed. Members must furnish their own feed and feeding equipment, water pail, bedding and grooming equipment. Feed and bedding will not be available at the fairgrounds. If you have portable corrals or pens for your animal, it is recommended that you bring them since the show will be held at the fairgrounds with minimal facilities. All pens must be cleaned up by the 4-H er at the end of the event. Scrapie tags are required for all sheep and goats to comply with state regulations. WEIGH-IN All 4-H ers who plan to exhibit market steers, goats or market lambs at the Livestock 4-H Achievement Day must have had those animals present, tagged and tattooed at the spring weigh-in day at the

3 Cattlemen s Weighing Station across from Tops Cafe in Sterling. 4-H ers that participate in the rate of gain for market steer and lambs must have their animals weighed at weigh-in day. In order to show in a market class at achievement days, you are required to participate at weigh-in May 4th. (EXCLUDES HOGS) 4-H ers may weigh two market steers,or two market lambs, or two market goats however they must be tagged and tattooed identifying them for that specific 4-Her. Each 4-H er is allowed to weigh in 2 market animals (primary) with 1 family alternate. The family alternate may be used to replace a primary animal, but it must be communicated that the alternate is the replacement animal at registration. At the show, they are allowed to bring and show 2 animals in separate weight classes. Any animals the 4-H er wishes to take to the State Fair in addition to the two animals they are showing must be brought to Achievement Days so the judge can look at the animals and deem them blue ribbon quality for the State Fair. If animals are not properly registered with the Extension Office prior to the State Fair, State Fair premiums will not be guaranteed. Alternate livestock cannot be shared amongst 4-Her s that are not immediate family. Swine participants will call the extension office to schedule a day after May 5 for the extension agent to verify that they are in the possession of the 4-H er and on the premises with proper information to the Extension office. SHOW The market beef, sheep, goats and hogs will be weighed when registered at the show. Any animal(s) arriving after 9:00 a.m. and not weighed in prior to the start of the show will not be allowed to show at the 4-H Livestock Show. The weight information will be available to the show judge. The market hogs, sheep, goats and beef will be divided by weight if there are more than approximately 20 in the class. If more than one weight group per division is used, grand champions and reserve champions will participate in overall champion or reserve champion selection. Animals that come to the show on the same trailer as hogs will not be allowed to exit the trailer until the hogs have passed a visual test looking for the PEDv, Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus. *The animals that are going to participate in the hog show will need to pass a visual inspection and present all current and past health certificates (North Dakota health certificate from a North Dakota licensed veterinarian must be dated between June 11, 2014 and July 8, 2014) before they will be allowed off of the trailer. Any animals displaying symptoms or animals within the same trailer are not allowed to participate in the show and will be reported to the state veterinarian. The hog show will take place immediately after the hogs have completed weigh-in. Showmanship and confirmation will be done simultaneously. As soon as the hog show is complete, hogs will return to the trailers they came from to limit the potential for spreading PEDv. Any animals that are in the show and display symptoms will need to be moved to the designated quarantine area. Hog boots or designated footwear for the swine area only are required, NO EXCEPTIONS. A designated safe area for spectators will be made and no one can cross into the hog area without proper biosecurity measures, NO EXCEPTIONS. Showman will need alternate clothing. All show supplies must be kept with only the hogs and cannot be mixed amongst other animals unless they go through the triple disinfectant rinse process. All breeding classes will be allowed to be broken out per state fair rules. Each 4-H participant is limited to one entry per lot in breeding. Market lambs must weigh at least 90 lbs. to qualify for champion consideration and be eligible for the premium sale.

4 Market barrows and gilts must weigh at least 210lbs to qualify for champion consideration and be eligible for the premium sale. Any animal not meeting minimum market weight will be shown in a sub lot prospect class and will not be eligible for champion consideration or participation in the premium sale. The sub lot prospect class is not a market class; prospect classes are for animals that may or may not develop into market animals at a later date. Premium sale is for terminal market animals only; intact males are not eligible. There are no minimum weights in the State Fair rules for beef or goats. Wash your animal at home. There are no facilities at the fairgrounds. It is recommended that market lambs be shorn and steers be dehorned. Any 4-H Leader with agriculture clubs will have the option of disqualifying a 4-H er in their club from showing at the 4-H Achievement Days if they have not provided adequate care and management of their 4-H animal(s). The issue can also be referred to the Livestock Committee for consideration. All 4-H ers showing livestock must be neatly dressed and must wear a solid colored white, yellow, gray, or green shirt/blouse with the 4-H emblem prominently displayed and securely fastened on the front and dark jeans. 4-H members may not wear short shorts or short skirts, shirts or tops that are low-cut or allow the midriff to show, or shirts that are sleeveless. Shirts should be of sufficient length to be tucked into the pants/skirt. Swine showman may be required to wear protective clothing on show day that will be provided by Livestock Committee. Protective Shoes are required for 4-H ers with livestock. Only the 4-H er can show their market livestock that was tattooed & tagged under their name. If both market animals are in the same weight class, the 4-H er must choose which animal to show. Animals must be shown by the exhibitor unless permission is granted by the livestock committee prior to the show. Substitute show people must follow dress code. Those 4-H ers not in attendance will not be excluded from the premium sale. *Grand and Reserve Champions from each lot or lot group will be brought back for Overall Grand Champion and Overall Reserve Champion. Leaders cannot show animals for a 4-H er. For safety reasons, if an aggressive animal(s) become(s) an obvious hazard or threat to the well-being and safety of participating 4-H ers at the achievement days, then the animal(s) will be disqualified from the show and the premium sale as determined by the livestock committee with consultation from the livestock judge if available. All 4-H'ers in both junior and senior divisions should participate in Showmanship. One junior and one senior will be selected in beef, sheep, hogs, goats, and dairy categories. These 4-H'ers will compete for overall showmanship honors with the junior and senior horse showman. Livestock showmanship will be judged at all times. Animals shown in showmanship must have been shown in a market or breeding class by that 4-H er. Each club member must do his own grooming to be eligible for the showmanship contest. 4-H literature contains information on feeding, showing and grooming animals. Parents are not allowed to fit stock. They should encourage 4-H ers to do the work

5 No spectators will be allowed in the show ring during the beef show, and access to the show ring will be limited during the sheep show. The only adults allowed in the show ring will be designated Ring Steward, Livestock Committee members and Extension staff. Panels will be used to separate parents and participants waiting to show from those in the show ring. Round Robin points are calculated using a scale of 1-10 with 2 decimal points. So each species judge is consistent with all youth since they judge all youth against their own criteria. The points are tallied by 3 people for accuracy prior to determining the winner. Both the Jr. and Sr. Showman from each species will bring their animals forward. Should an exhibitor win overall showman in two species, they will need to choose which one to show in the Round Robin. The species that they do not show, the reserve showman will then have the opportunity to show in the round robin in that species. No hogs will be shown during the Round Robin but there will be a hog section involved. The hog portion will consist of industry standards questions. The traveling trophies will be given to the individual that wins Sr. showmanship in that species during the livestock show versus during the round robin. Judges decisions are final. SALE The sales order will be goats, beef, hogs and sheep. Grand Champions will sell first and Reserve Champions second. The remainder will be from the sale order based on the drawing from the preregistrations. The Show Order will be posted in the pens. If a 4-H er has a grand and reserve champion in 2 different species, the grand champion animal must be sold over the reserve champion animal. If a 4-H er has two grand champion animals, the 4-H er is allowed to choose what animal they wish to sell. The total sale amount will have 1% taken off the top to help pay for expenses related to Livestock Achievement Day. All sale animals must be presented by a 4-H er at the sale or animal will not be allowed to go through the sale. Only one market animal may be sold by a 4-H er. Only livestock receiving a red ribbon or higher will be eligible for the premium sale. Animals from the sublot prospect class are not eligible for the premium sale. Hogs are not present during the sale. Areas where livestock is penned must be cleaned after the sale. Debris must be picked up from the arena, as well as the area around and under the bleachers. PLEASE REFER TO ND STATE FAIR GUIDELINES FOR ADDITIONAL LIVESTOCK REQUIREMENTS INCLUDING CARE, MANAGEMENT, HEALTH AND OWNERSHIP. THE STATE FAIR BOOK SHOULD BE USED AS A GUIDELINE WITH THE COUNTY FACT SHEET TAKING PRECEDENT OVER THE STATE FAIR BOOK.
