2 Multi-County Dog Show Entries are now available for the Multi-County Dog Show in Fredonia at the Wilson County Fairgrounds on Saturday, June 20, at 8:00 am. Entries are due by June 12 to the Wilson County Extension Office. For more information or entry forms and rules, contact Jenny. This is the dog show for Rolling Prairie 4-H ers to participate in because there will not be a dog show at the County Fairs. Sewing Opportunity Available We set a date with Needle in the Haystack Cynthia Washburne - June 26th from 10am-12pm, Making origami bags! All material may be purchased there for 20% off that day! For more information contact Jill Morgan. Wildcat Sewing Camp Create a garment from pattern to wear during this year s 4th annual Kansas 4-H Sewing Camp! Participants will explore new sewing concepts and improve current sewing skills. Junior participants (age 9-12) and Senior participants (age 13 and older) will attend camp at K-State Salina, work on touch control sewing machines, and receive assistance from teen counselors and textile knowledgeable adults. Junior camp will be held June 25-27, and Senior camp will be held June All fabrics, supplies and equipment will be provided for youth to construct their garment. Junior participants will choose from an apron, pull-over shirt or pants. Senior participants will choose between a tailored vest or silky shirt. Junior registration cost is $170 and Senior registration cost is $215. Space is limited, so early registration is strongly encouraged. Registration closes May 8, Shows, Sales and Contests Spring contests are now taking place in the area. If you are interested in participating in any of these, ask the Extension Office for information. Most of these are sent to us via so we can forward many of these to you. We have a page with some of these shows listed on our website. Bucket Calf Project The Bucket Calf project is designed to introduce youth up to 12 years of age to beef and dairy 4-H projects. By giving younger children the experience of working with a smaller, less intimidating animal, they become comfortable with cattle as they grow. Purposes of the project are: 1. To design a cattle project to fit the physical size and maturity level of younger youths. 2. To teach proper health care and nutritional requirements of young cattle. 3. To teach basic beef management skills without a large investment. 4. To teach basic record keeping skills. 5. To provide a better understanding of the feeder cattle industry. A bucket calf is an orphan or newborn calf purchased within two weeks of birth. The calves may be male or female; dairy, beef or cross; and fed on a bottle (or bucket) and nipple. Calves should be owned at least 90 days prior to the fair. Bucket Calf classes at the fair are judged by conference method based on: 1. What 4-H er learned about caring for and raising the calf? 2. Fitting and showing according to either beef or dairy guidelines, with emphasis on how much the 4-H er learned and can do without help. However, parental guidance is encouraged. 3. The general health of calf and knowledge of 4-H er in health related areas. 4. Dairy or beef quality IS NOT CONSIDERED! It is what the member has learned, not the quality of the calf that is important. Since the purpose of the bucket calf project is to introduce younger members to caring for and showing cattle on a smaller basis, once a member begins showing market beef or breeding heifers, they should not be exhibiting bucket calves as well. NOTE: Bucket calves do not require a 4-H ear tag!

Call Dean State Livestock Nominations Listed below is information for the 2015 State Livestock Nominations: All animals that are nominated for the Junior Livestock Show and State Fair will be required to be tagged with the Kansas 4-H EID tags. DNA Hair Samples are required for each nominated animal for ALL SPECIES. The nomination fee per animal is $8.00. All other species and commercial animal nominations are due June 15. There is a one-time/year $10.00 fee if a nomination has to be returned to the family for any reason (i.e. incomplete form). Nomination Declaration Forms and specie nomination forms are due at nomination. All forms, checklists, and changes are on the K-State Animal Science Youth website at: If you need DNA envelopes for hair samples, please contact your Extension Office. 4-H Jr Leaders The Rolling Prairie 4-H Junior Leaders is a district wide 4-H group which consists of 4-H members 13 years old and above. The 4-H Junior Leaders participate in many fun and exciting activities and community service events throughout the year. This is a great opportunity to be a youth leader in Rolling Prairie 4-H, while also having fun with your fellow 4-H friends. Being a Junior Leader builds leadership and communication skills which will be useful to you in building resumes and filling out scholarship applications. The Junior Leaders hold bimonthly business meetings on the third Sunday of the month. The Junior Leaders decide on the activities in which they participate in throughout the year. Yearly activities include; Volleyball Tournament, Christmas Party, 4-H Day Camp and fair assistants. The meeting dates are as follows and will be at 4:00 pm at the Extension Office Meeting Room in Howard: May 17 July 12 September 20

4 Rolling Prairie 4-H Tuesday, June 2 Favorite Foods Howard The Favorite Food Show is an exhibit and contest to encourage 4-H ers to learn about meal planning, food preparation, and presentation. A Favorite Food is chosen, one the 4-H er likes and likes to prepare. A menu is planned with the food, and the table decor is coordinated. Foods chosen may be main courses, desserts, snacks, breads, casseroles or other. The Favorites Food Show judging will start at 10:00 am and awards will be given after the exhibits are judged. Registration forms were sent out in the 4-H newsletter and are due by May 29th. Tuesday, June 2 I m Hungry Cooking Howard I m hungry is constantly heard after school, after practice, or when you are about to head out the door. This workshop will help eliminate the I m hungry by teaching participants to make their own healthy snacks. Recipes you will learn include whole wheat pretzels, chocolate muffins and roasted chickpeas. We will also be learning about what it takes to make a healthy lifestyle. The workshop will be from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. Registration is $5 and is due May 29th. Saturday, June 6 Foods Judging Independence Are you interested in helping educate 4-H youth through judging foods or food preservation at the fair? This training is for you! Whether you are a new or returning judge, come learn about judging a variety of foods entered by talented 4-H ers. This training will be held June 6 th from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at Wildcat District Extension Office in Independence. Registration is due to Barbara Ames by May 29 th at (620) Registration is $8 and each participant is asked to bring a serrated knife, cutting board and homemade food item. Check-in begins at 9:30 a.m. Cost is $10.00 (for craft supplies and lunch) and one non-perishable item that will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House in Wichita. 7 4-H Favorite Food Show Rolling Prairie Extension District Tuesday June 2nd, 10:00 a.m. Extension Meeting Room, Howard The Favorite Food Show is an exhibit and contest to encourage 4-H ers to learn about meal planning, food preparation, and presentation. A Favorite Food is chosen, one the 4-H er likes and likes to prepare. A menu is planned with the food, and the table decor is coordinated. Foods chosen may be main courses, desserts, snacks, breads, casseroles or other. A recipe card and a menu card should be displayed with the proper table setting. The 4-H er will visit informally with the judge and tell how to prepare and serve the food, why they selected the table service and dishes, and why the centerpiece is appropriate. The 4-H er should also know some of the nutritional value of the food and be able to discuss that with the judge. This is a creative and fun event for 4-H ers. There are no hard and fast rules, but the following score card is suggested: 25% The Exhibitor Be neatly dressed and well groomed, appropriately dressed for the occasion of the menu Understand the preparation of your food and be able to describe it to the judge Understand the nutrition of your food and the menu planned and be able to discuss it with the judge. (Can ask at the Extension Office for nutritional analysis.) 25% The Favorite Food The food should be good quality, and flavorful and look appealing. Have the recipe printed on a card to set on the table. Prepare and serve one serving. The judge may sample the food. 25% The Menu The menu should be suitable for the occasion you ve planned and appropriate for your favorite food. The menu should have a suitable combination of color, texture, flavor and food value. Have the menu printed on a card on the table. 25% The Table Setting Bring your own card table, table covering, plates, service (what would be used for the menu) and small decoration. The table setting should be appropriate for the menu. Chautauqua County 4-H News Chautauqua County Premium Sale 4-H ers that plan to exhibit market livestock at the fair and sell that livestock through the premium sale must meet the following requirements: Minimum weights Market Beef 1050 lbs. Market Hogs 210 lbs. Market Lambs 90 lbs. Market Goats 50 lbs. Attend Three Events Exhibit in a livestock show or judging Participate in a livestock educational event Write a Story about or Do a Financial Analysis of Your Livestock Project The Premium Sale Committee would like you to attended a variety of events. Elk County 4-H News Elk County Livestock Educational Requirement Market livestock members must attend and/or participate in at least three educational events or activities related to the market livestock projects of beef, sheep, swine and goat in order to sell at the livestock premium sale. Activities or events can be Elk County livestock events, out of county spring shows and/or livestock judging contests, and other events. If you are not sure if an event will count ask Jenny prior to attending to get verification. Also, it is your responsibility to notify the office what events (other than the Elk County ones) you have attended and/or participated in order to receive credit for them. Local club events or project meetings are not the only activities that were meant to count towards the requirement. We want members to attend both in county and out of county events to count towards the requirement. Elk County 4-H Events Scholarship The Jim Williams Memorial Scholarship for Elk County 4-H ers has been established. Elk County 4-H ers can apply one time per year for $50 to attend an out of county 4-H event. Examples of events that this could be used for are: Citizenship in Action, Discovery Days, 4-H Camp, Citizenship Washington Focus, KYLF, and others. The application is being finalized and will be available at the Howard Extension Office. Application is due at time of registration or when payment is made for the event. Market Swine & Market Beef The Elk County Premium Sale Committee met and decided that market swine and beef will be returned to the 4-H or FFA member for marketing following the premium sale. There will not be a truck taking beef or swine to the sale barn. If you need help marketing your animal please let the extension office know.
