It s time to repack the show box, clean the barn, and get the trailer ready for the upcoming show season. As you prepare for next show season, be sure to read over all the enclosed information carefully, adhere to all deadline dates, and contact us with any questions. If you have animals and plan to show at the upcoming Fall shows, complete the enclosed Fall Entry Forms and return them by August 15th. Club meetings will begin in September. Don t forget to join 4-H at your school as soon as possible when school begins. Be sure to enroll yourself in your specific livestock project. Even though you were a member this past school year and were enrolled in livestock, you MUST fill out another enrollment card and choose your livestock project again!!! AGAIN, failure to follow these guidelines will prohibit you from participating in the fall and you will not receive our newsletters. Also, be reminded that any animal you plan to show at the H Spring Livestock Shows must be in your possession (under your care) and transferred into the exhibitor s name by the designated possession date for that specie. (SEE PAGE 3) If you check off a livestock project on your enrollment card but do not receive a newsletter from this point forward; if you have a change of address shortly after you turn your enrollment card in or if you know of a 1st time 4-H member who may not receive this letter but would like to participate in 4-H livestock shows, please contact the 4-H office immediately. Do not wait until the entry forms are due to call us State Fair Livestock Validation Rules for Exhibitors & Validation Dates (Market & Commercials Cattle, Goats, Sheep, & Swine) All market & commercial cattle, goats, & sheep must have been previously DNA tested in order to be valid for entry into the 2016 State Fair Junior Livestock Show. The deadline for validating market & commercial swine is August 10th. A letter indicating these dates and rules was mailed out in May. If the animal(s) was not validated during this validation process, the exhibitor is not be eligible to exhibit the animal(s) at the 2016 State Fair of Louisiana. If you have any questions, you are welcome to contact us at If you would like more information on the State Fair go to statefairoflouisiana.com. Broiler Chicks for State Fair If you would like to order broilers to be exhibited at the State Fair in Shreveport, please do so by August 15th. The chicks will be delivered on Thursday, September 15th. All broiler chick orders must come through our office. Please complete the attached form and return it with proper payment no later than August 15th. The cost will be $.40 per chick payable to Louisiana Poultry Federation. Be sure to include payment with your order. Judging for the State Fair will be on Friday, October 28th. Exhibitors will be allowed to show two pens of broilers. The LSU Agricultural Center, a statewide campus of the LSU System, and Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center, a statewide campus of the Southern University System, provide equal opportunities in programs and employment. Louisiana State University and A&M College, Southern University and A&M College, Louisiana parish governing bodies, and United States Department of Agriculture cooperating.
2 New Livestock Exhibitors If you know of any first year exhibitors who are planning to show in the upcoming fall shows, have them contact our office as soon as possible. These are usually 4-H ers who will join 4-H in September at their school for the first time. We need to add them to the mailing list to begin sending them the newsletter. Advisory Committee Meeting An advisory committee meeting has been tentatively scheduled to discuss the parish 4-H livestock program. This meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 5th, at 6:00 PM. It will be held at 1010 Lafayette St., Ste. 325, in the local LSU AgCenter, Louisiana Cooperative Extension office. Jackpot Shows Cattle News For information about jackpot shows, c h e c k o u t for information about shows available through the Louisiana Junior Show Circuit. Now is probably the ideal time to begin shopping for beef breeding projects. Beef calves born this spring are nearing weaning age and getting old enough so that a good visual appraisal can be made. Select a calf that is heavily muscled, structurally correct, and moderate in frame size. Be sure to get assistance from someone who has some experience in choosing show calf projects. If you need help in selecting a beef project, please give us a call. Mr. Stan and Mrs. Hannah are willing to assist will serve as contacts for the Beef Project this year. Remember, possession date for the spring shows is November 5th. Goat & Sheep News If you haven't purchased your market goat & lamb projects for the spring, be aware that it's getting late to do this. Although possession date is not until November 5th, most goats & lambs are purchased/sold during the summer. The longer you wait the fewer animals that will be available to select from. Call us if you need help. We can put you in contact with a local breeder Fall Livestock Shows Each year, Lafayette parish 4-H'ers are invited to participate in several local festivals that include livestock shows (Sugarcane and Cattle Festivals) as well as the Louisiana State Fair. Entries for these shows must come through this office. NOTE: Market animal exhibitors must have requested tags and DNA kits through our office prior to State Fair possession dates. If you have not the State Fair will not allow you to enter. If you plan to participate, please follow all instructions for the Fall Show Entry. The fall shows that we will attend as a parish are listed below along with the species of livestock which may be exhibited at each. SEPT LA SUGARCANE FEST, New Iberia (Beef Breeding, Dairy, Market Lambs and Market Goats) OCT LA CATTLE FEST, Abbeville (Market Goats & Lambs, Breeding Beef, Dairy, Goats, & Sheep) OCT 27-NOV LA STATE FAIR, Shreveport (All species) In order to exhibit animals at any of the above listed shows, you must fill out the enclosed Entry Form and return it to us at the 4-H office no later than August 15th. Please understand that the attached form is your official entry for any of these fall shows. It must be completed even if you have already completed other paper work or expressed a verbal interest in showing. Also, we must have a copy of the registration papers of all breeding animals to be shown at any of the fall shows before these shows begin. You will need to make a copy and send it to us with your entry form as soon as possible. Swine News It is too early to select your market hog projects for the spring show, but it s not too early to getting your pens at home ready for when your pigs will arrive. These pigs are being born now and you should be able to begin your shopping in 4-6 weeks. Possession date is December 1. ADDRESSES NEEDED! Many reminders and jackpot show flyers are sent through . 4 2016 LSU AgCenter State Livestock Show Validation Procedure Validation Fee: Exhibitors will be required to pay a $5 per animal validation fee at the time of validation. We encourage that payment be in the form of a check or money order made payable to the Lafayette 4-H Foundation. Exhibitors must make arrangements for their animals to attend the designated validation or to pick up their validation kits upon notification that they have been delivered to the Lafayette Extension Office and then complete the validation process prior to date of validation (November 3rd for Commercial Beef Heifers, Commercial Dairy Heifers, Market Lambs, Commercial Ewes, Market Goats, Commercial Does and December 1 for market swine). SPECIES Steers Commercial Beef Heifers, Commercial Dairy Heifers, Market Lambs, Commercial Ewes, Market Goats, Commercial Does Market Swine Validation Due DATES August 1st Tuesday, November 1 (5:00 pm 6:30 pm) Monday, December 5 (5:00 pm 6:30 pm) General validation guidelines: All validated animals must either have an official La. State Fair tag or an official LSU AgCenter tag when hair samples are collected. Animals must be in continuous possession of exhibitor from time of validation until the LSU AgCenter State Livestock Show. See rules in 2017 LSU AgCenter State Show catalog or consult the livestock show manager for specific possession rules. Animals previously tagged for the 2015 Louisiana State Fair may utilize the State Fair tag to complete LSU AgCenter State Show validations. All animals must be tagged with either an LSU Tag or State Fair tag to validate. (Separate DNA samples must be submitted to validate for LSU Show) Only validated market and commercial animals will be eligible to be exhibited at LSU AgCenter district and state shows. Animals must be validated in either the exhibitors name or in family name (Family consist of parents, legal guardians, brothers, and sisters.); if validated in family name when official entry forms are turned in at the parish level the animal validated must be entered in the name of the exhibitor which will show the animal at the District and State Livestock Show. The responsibility of tagging animals and collecting DNA/hair samples will be that of the exhibitor and/or parent. Agents/Ag Teachers MAY be present and can assist. Market and Commercial animals will not be officially classified at these locations; however agents/ag teachers will assist exhibitors in determining correct classification for entries.( Official classifications will take place at the State Show; District show managers will have the right to reclassify any animals that are obviously classified incorrectly at District shows.) Validation Hardship Requirements District and/or State Show Manager must be notified no later than the listed deadlines if an unforeseen emergency or act of God has prohibited an exhibitor from attending validation. After contacting the District and/or State Show Manager, hardship forms must be immediately filed through the parish office with supporting material and stating hardship. The deadline for making notifications and filing hardships are: Steers July 18th Dairy, Beef, Sheep, Goat November 14th Market Hogs December 5th These hardships will be evaluated on a case by case basis by parish agent, district show manager, and state show manager. Only cases where it is determined to have been unavoidable will the exhibitor be allowed to validate. This decision will be final and not subject to appeal. 4 Page 4
