1 4-H Spotlight October 2013 If you have not re-enrolled in Henderson County 4-H for the H year, this will be your last newsletter. Be sure and turn your membership form in to our office or your club leader, or you can go online to register at If you register before November 1st, the enrollment fee is $20. Tyler St., ste. 300 Athens, TX Phone: Fax: HCLS Validation Saturday, October 19th 7 11 a.m. TVCC Ranch The Henderson County Livestock Show validation will be for commercial heifers, steers, yearling projects, market lambs, market goats, major lambs, and major goats. ALPA and Council meetings 7 p.m. Monday, October 7th Extension office Broiler orders will be due to the Extension office by Wednesday, November 6th. The pen of 25 broilers will be $ Entry fees are $15.00 per pen of 3 with a limit of 2 entries. To place your order call Major show entries are due to the Extension office on Wednesday, November 6 th from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Major shows include Ft. Worth, Houston, San Antonio, San Angelo and Austin. If you plan on entering the District 5 Dairy Judging Contest, you will also need to enter on this date. The D5 Dairy Judging will be held through the Ft. Worth Livestock Show.

2 Local News and Activities 4-H Scholarship Workshop Monday, October 21st 6-8 p.m. Extension Office It is never too early to get information on scholarships. All members and parents who want to learn more about applying for scholarships are encouraged to attend. Don t wait until your senior year to get started. Find out what all you need to do and more. Food and Nutrition Fun Night Monday, October 28th 6-8 p.m. Extension office We will be covering all contests you can compete in at the Food and Nutrition Extravaganza. Contests include Food Show, Food and Nutrition Quiz Bowl, Food Challenge, Ag I.D. and much more. If you or someone from your club is or think you might be interested in forming a team for the Food and Nutrition Quiz Bowl or Food Challenge, please make plans on attending. 6 Showing at a major show? Don t forget to get your Quality Counts Verification. Starting in 2013, Quality Counts verification will be required for all youth exhibiting livestock (market and/or breeding) at major livestock shows in Texas (including the Ft. Worth Livestock Show, San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, Star of Texas Fair in Austin, San Angelo Livestock Show, Sandhills Stock Show in Odessa, State Fair of Texas in Dallas, and Heart O Texas Fair in Waco). The verification process will require junior exhibitors to pass an online test that measures their knowledge on quality
