1 Lavaca County 4-H Newsletter March, 2013 COUNTY FASHION SHOW The County Fashion Show will be held on March 25. Rules are available at the Extension Office. County Fashion Show entry deadline is March 15. The District Fashion Show is scheduled for April 27. If you have questions about the clothing project or the county fashion show you may contact Mrs. Bludau at the County Extension Office. Lavaca County Staff Shannon R. DeForest CEA-Ag DISTRICT 4-H ROUNDUP The District 11 4-H Roundup has been scheduled for April 13. The events consist of Method Demonstrations and Illustrated Talks, Public Speaking, and Horse, Beef and Nutrition Quiz Bowls. 4-H ers interested in participating in any of these events are welcome to contact the Extension Office for more information or for assistance in preparing presentations. District Roundup entries are due online via 4-H Connect by March 25. Gayle Bludau CEA-FCS Jennifer Steffek Office Manager FASHION STORYBOARD The purpose of the Fashion Storyboard contest is to give 4-H members an opportunity to create a storyboard of their original design. It also provides the members an opportunity to gain knowledge, enhance creativity and originality, and develop visual communications skills. 4-H members must submit a storyboard that provides a solution to a specific design brief. A complete set of rules and guidelines are available at the Extension Office. Entry deadline will be April 8. Please call the Extension Office for more information. MAJOR SHOW STEER TAG ORDERS 4-Hers who are planning to exhibit a steer at any of the major stockshows must order tags for their projects by Friday, April 12. Tags are $9 each and must be paid for when ordering. Orders can be placed at the County Extension Office. P.O. Box S. 2 Certifying Horse Projects All 4-H horse projects, including futurity horses, must be owned and validated on or before May 1. This year the certification process will be competed online. More information on this process is available at the County Extension Office. Horse Futurity Nominations 4-Hers nominating yearlings, two-year-olds and three-year-olds for the Texas 4-H Futurity Horse Program must complete a Futurity Nomination online by May 1. 4-Hers must be 12 years old or older on September 1, 2012 in order to participate in the 2013 Futurity Horse Program. District Horse Show The District Horse Show will be held June Entries are due online by June 4. Registration information will be available at the County Extension Office soon. District Leadership Lab The 2012 District 11 4-H Leadership Lab has been set for June 17-19, Leadership Lab is a leadership camp for high school aged 4-Hers. This year the event will be held in Brownwood. Registration deadline is May 24. Record Books Texas 4-H has developed a new online record keeping system which was used last year for the first time. The system was created to be more age appropriate for each division. The system can be accessed at On this site, you will find the login for the system along with instructions and tutorials about the new system. All 4-H families are encourages to visit the site and become acquainted with the system. Completed record books are due in the Extension Office by Monday, June 10, Star and I Dare You Awards The application forms for the Bronze Star, Silver Star, Gold Star and I Dare You Awards are available at the County Extension Office. Applications are due by June 10 along with your completed 4-H Record Book. These are county level awards that are given to recognized outstanding accomplishments and potential leadership. To be considered for these awards 4-Hers must complete an award application, complete a 4-H record book and be available for an interview. Each award consists of cash or a savings bond. Award Interviews The interview date for all of the above mentioned awards and the County 4-H Scholarship will be June 27. A schedule will be sent after applications have been turned in. Those who cannot be there on the designated date will have an opportunity to video tape their interview before the interview date. Please contact the Extension Office for permission and to make video taping arrangements.

3 T.E.E.A. SCHOLARSHIP Applications for the Lavaca County Extension Education Association Scholarship are available in the Extension Office. This is a $500 scholarship and is due by March 15 th. Lavaca County Local Go-Texan Scholarship Applications for the 2012 Local Go-Texan Scholarship are available at the Extension Office or at your school counselors office. Application deadline is April 1. Lavaca County 4-H Scholarship Applications are available at the County Extension Office for the Lavaca County 4-H Scholarship. Applications should be turned in with your completed record book by June 10. All applicants must be available for an interview on June 10. Those who cannot be there on the designated date should contact the Extension Office prior to the interview date to have your interview Hallettsville Junior Livestock Show Scholarship Applications are available at the County Extension Office for the Hallettsville Junior Livestock Show Scholarship. Application deadline is April 8. South Texas Farm and Ranch Show Scholarship The South Texas Farm & Ranch Show is offering several scholarships. Applications must arrive in the Victoria Co. Extension Office by April 5, Interested seniors may pick up applications at the Lavaca Co. Extension Office. State Fair Lamb and Goat Tags 4-H members who plan to exhibit a lamb or goat project at the State Fair of Texas must order their tags at the Extension Office by April 12. Driscoll Children s Roundup The South Texas Cattlemen s Roundup benefitting Driscoll Children s Hospital will be held in June (date will be announced in the May newsletter) at the Hallettsville Livestock Commission Company. The sale will begin at approximately 12:00 noon. Lavaca County 4-H members are asked to donate items for the auction and/or work at the auction. Donations can be baked goods, canned goods, plants, livestock feed, livestock equipment, etc. Please mark your calendars for this event.

4 Junior Leadership Lab Junior Leadership Lab will be held on July 10 at Rockport Beach. Registration deadline is June 26. The fee is $30 per participant. More information is available at the County Extension Office. All 4-H members age 9 thru 13, as of May 31, 2012, are invited to participate in Junior Lab. Camps. Camps. Camps. Camps. Camps 2013 Horse Judging Camps The Texas A&M Horse Judging Camps will be held June 5-7 and June 26-28, 2013 at Texas A&M University. The cost is $290 per participant. Entry deadline is May 30, More information is available at the Extension Office Livestock Judging Camps The 2012 Livestock Judging Camps will be held at Texas A&M University. Camp dates will be May 31-June 2, 2013, June 14-16, and June The cost of the camp is $300. More information is available at the Extension Office. Show Cattle Camp A Show Cattle Camp will be held at the Beef Center in College Station with dates to be determined. The cost of the camp is $150 per participant. More information is available at the Extension Office Lamb and Goat Camp The 2013 Aggieland Lamb and Goat Camp dates have been set. More information is available at the Extension Office Summer Camps At 4-H Conference Center In Brownwood Each summer there are a number of camps offered at the Texas 4-H Conference Center in Brownwood. A schedule of camps and registration information is available at the following website: Livestock Judging Clinic A livestock Judging Camp will be held on March 23 at Pearce Pavilion in College Station. Registration is $10 per person until March 18 and $15 per person after the 18th. More information is available at the Extension Office.

5 County Photography Results Judging of the 2013 Lavaca County 4-H Photography Contest took place with 106 entries. Entries were judged on impact, creativity, technical excellence, composition, lighting, style, presentation, center of interest, subject matter, color balance, technique and story telling. First place winners in each category of the senior age group will advance to state competition.
