2 Page 2 Bell County 4-H July/August Newsletter 4-H July 4 th Float Would you like to promote 4-H at the 4 th of July Parade Celebration in Belton, on July 4, 2011!!! Bell County 4-H will be entering a float in the parade and we would like to invite Bell County 4-H members and their families from across the county to come walk/ride in the parade. Parade Participation will be on Wednesday July 4th meet at 7:30AM to get everyone in place and finish any last minute decorating touches. The parade theme is HOMETOWN HEROES the 4H members are asked to dress up as their favorite hometown hero such as policemen, fire fighters, teachers and wounded warriors. Please make sure to put on sunscreen and wear comfortable walking shoes. The 4-H Banquet is set for August 25, 2012 at the Bell County Expo Center in the Special Events Room, so please mark your calendar. The banquet cost will be FREE. All 4-H Members and Leaders/Adults are welcome to attend! Please RSVP by August 13 th. If you do not RSVP, there will not be enough food for everyone so do not forget!!!! We need pictures for the slideshow. Pictures can be burned on to a CD or flash drive and dropped by the Extension Office. The last day to accept pictures will be August 1st. Pictures are for the slideshow which is a great opportunity to show what clubs and 4-H members have been doing all year. Please make sure and give pictures so you club and your family is in the slideshow! Date: September 15, 2012 Time: 10am-3pm Place: /Place to TBD Based on Space RSVP: August 20th. Please RSVP so we know how much space we need. Cost: FREE/Take your lessons back to your club! Bell County 4-H will be holding a FCS Project Training for all 4-H Club Leaders and Teen Leaders. This is open to ALL 4-H parents and teens ages 12 and up who would like to learn about the FCS projects and bring them back to their clubs to teach others pm will be the Food and Nutrition/Healthy Lifestyle Portion, 12-1pm Consumer Education, and 1-3pm will be Clothing and Textiles Project. The training will be very interactive and have many ideas and projects to help you go back to your club and teach as well as learn more about the project. Lunch will be provided.
3 Bell County 4-H July/August Newsletter Page 3 Date: July 17th Time: 9am-12pm Location: Bell County Extension Office Cost: $5 RSVP by: July 13 th Clover Fun Day Age: The Clover Kid fun day is for all clover kids from ages 5-8 years of age. If the kids are going to be 5 before August 31st and not 9 by August 31st they are invited to attend. This will be a 4-H fun day for clover kids. They will be doing fun food snacks, arts and crafts, and learn a little bit about 4-H. It will be a lot of fun!!! Embroidery Workshop Heart of Texas Embroidery Guild will be holding a workshop on the basics of embroidery and working on a small counted cross stitch project. This includes instructions in how to work with embroidery floss, material, and working a small project. Date: Two night workshop, Tuesday, July 17 and Monday, July 23 Time: 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Place: Extension Meeting Room Cost: $5 (checks made payable to Heart of Texas Embroidery Guild) Age: Must be 8 years and up Class size limited to 25 *If you are already working on a project for the BCYF, please feel free to bring it. Please contact the to RSVP by Friday, July 6 to reserve your place. Payment may be made at the time of class.
4 Page 4 Bell County 4-H July/August Newsletter Bell County 4-H will be having a Government tour on July 19, 2012 from 8:15am to 1:30pm. (We will be leaving and arriving from the Extension Office) We will be learning about Bell County Government and how it works. We will be touring Government buildings including an exciting tour of the Bell County Jail from delivery to booking to release!!! Lunch will be provided and the tour will cost $5. Please RSVP by July 2nd to the Extension Office because only 20 spots will be open. No clover kids or younger children will be allowed. Parents who are interested in coming are asked to come and we would love your assistance in driving youth to the various locations. (Drivers must be Adult Volunteers for the year). We will also be doing a community service project where we ask each of you to bring ½ dozen or more cookies in a ziploc bag to give to the jail/police workers in appreciation for keeping our community safe! For those doing a recordbook, this would be a county community service project. Those who cannot come can still make cookies for service project and bring them by the Friday before the event or the day of. Come and enjoy an exciting tour and learn about your government! Recreation Day camp is here!! And it is happening on July 26 at, 1-3pm. We will be playing games and getting to know one another. 2011/2012 Recreation club officers are strongly advised to come as we will be teaching some fun games you can play at your club. In order to attend you will need to bring at least one canned food item as a donation to Helping Hands. Be sure to wear clothes you do not mind getting wet/sweaty. We will be having a lot of FUN! Hope to see you there. Chef Day Camp is planned for August 13 th, at the from 9am-2pm. Bell County 4-H members will learn about basic food preparation. They will learn how to cook and compete in the food challenge as well. We also plan to take a tour of some food establishments. If you love to cook this is the workshop for you! Please let us know you are coming by August 6th so we have enough handouts and food. Workshop cost will be $10 which will include lunch and other free goodies!!!
5 Bell County 4-H July/August Newsletter Page 5 Do you aspire to design and sew your own clothes? If so join us to spend the day as a Fashion Designer. We will begin the day by sketching out a picture of your design. We will then shop for fabric and eat lunch. After lunch we will spend the afternoon sewing our designs, finishing off with a Runway Fashion Show at the close of the day. This is sure to be a fun way to kick off the new 4-H year. Come design and sew with your friends at the County Extension Office on August 7 from 8:30-5:00 pm. You will need to bring your basic sewing supplies (scissors, sewing machine if you have one, etc) and $10 to pay for lunch and fabric. We also would love to have a few adult volunteers to help for the day. Contact the, if you are able to help. Please RSVP by August 3rd. Do you like to sew or design clothes and would like to help plan the 4-H clothing projects??? The Clothing Advisory Board is a group that plans all the 4-H clothing workshops and activities! All are invited to the first meeting of the year to be held August 6th, from 10am-12pm, at the. Bring your ideas and calendars! See you then! The Clothing and Textiles Board is collecting fabric to make turbans and scarves for those undergoing chemotherapy treatment. If you would like to participate, our goal is to make 50 turbans and scarves. Each Cancer turban takes 5/8 of a yard of STRETCHY fabric (think t-shirt material). The scarves take 1/3 yard of ribbed knit and 1/3 yard of a coordinating fashion fabric. There is also a tied scarf we can make that uss a 36" square of 100% cotton or silk fabric. Donations of fabric will be collected at the and also at Project Runway. A good place to find inexpensive fabric is the bargain area to the back right of the store at Hancocks and the bargain $2/yard area at Belton Wal-Mart. Just make sure that the fabric feels very soft since it will be next to sensitive skin.
6 Page 6 Bell County 4-H July/August Newsletter Cake Decorating Workshop Bell County 4-H will be having a cake decorating workshop on August 2nd, from 1-3pm. The cake decorating workshop will be $10 and the deadline to register is July 23rd. At the workshop, 4-H members will receive a cake, icing, and other fun food items to decorate. Registration WILL NOT be accepted at the door so please make sure and register by the deadline. This includes the registration fee. This is so we can pay for the cakes and have enough. It will be a lot of 4-H Open House will be held September 11th from 5:30-8pm at the Bell County Expo Assembly Hall. Do you need more project experience for your recordbook or project form? Do you want to gain more members for your club? Here is your opportunity!!!!! If you would like to be in charge of a project or club booth at the Open House, please Micah Holcombe, mlholcombe@ag.tamu.edu, and let her know which project you would like to demonstrate or which club you plan to have a booth. Hands on activities are encouraged at each project booth! Project booths are first come first serve. Booths are to be reserved by September 1 st!! We are also asking each club to make a poster for their club to be displayed at the Open House. Posters are due to the Office September 1 st. (Those participating in project demonstrations and club booths need to be at the Expo Center by 5:00 p.m. to set up and be ready by 5:30pm) A committee meeting will be held July 9th, 5:30pm at the to plan for Open House. The club officer workshop will be on September 18, 2012, at the County Extension Office from 6pm-8pm. This workshop will be a great way for all club officers to learn about how to run their 4-H meetings. The county council officers and ambassadors will be leading this workshop. All club officers are highly encouraged to attend! It will be very informative and fun!
7 Bell County 4-H July/August Newsletter Page 7 State Fair of Texas Entries 4-H members who validated an animal and plan to show at the State Fair must complete and turn entries in to the Extension Office no later than August 15, Entry forms can be picked up and completed at the Extension Office. Lamb and Goat Tag Orders 4-H and FFA members who plan to show lambs or goats at the Bell County Youth Fair or Major Livestock Shows in 2013 must order tags no later than August 31, Contact Pam at to place your order. For those 4-H members who plan on showing Commercial Steers at the Bell County Youth Fair, the Commercial Steer Weigh-In will be held on Saturday, September 15, 2012 at 8:00 a.m. at the W.C. Evans Ranch in Little River-Academy, TX. For additional information you can call the. Any 4-H member who plans to show at the 2012 Heart of Texas Fair must complete and turn entry forms into the county extension office no later than September 10, Entry forms can be obtained from the Extension Office.
8 Page 8 Bell County 4-H July/August Newsletter Major Show Broilers 4-H members who plan to show broilers at San Antonio, Houston or Austin or roasters at the Star of Texas Fair in Austin must order no later than September 12, The minimum order is 25 birds per exhibitor. You may order a maximum of 75 birds per exhibitor and you must order in multiples of 25. Families cannot order one set of birds (75) for multiple children. Each exhibitor must select and exhibit their pen of 3 from the birds assigned to them. Contact Pam or Randall to order or with questions you may have. District Horse Show Results The District 8 4-H Horse Show was held Monday and Tuesday, June in Belton. Thank you to all those who worked hard in conducting the Horse Show! 9 Bell County 4-H July/August Newsletter Page 9 Texas 4-H Roundup CONGRATULATIONS!! Three Bell County 4-H members were awarded scholarships totaling $14,000. Brooke Hoelscher was a $2,000 recipient of the Nueces Power Equipment Scholarship. Katelyn Heisch received a $10,000 scholarship from Wallrath Foundation and a $1,000 scholarship from the TEEA. Peter Fasolino was awarded a $1,000 SALE Rural Youth Award Scholarship. Nutrition Quiz Bowl: The team of Brandon Stone, Brittany Stone, and Katherine Wood participated at the quiz bowl. Jan Stone served as coach for this team. Consumer Decision: The team of Brittany Stone, Brandon Stone, Peter Fasolino, and Katherine Wood placed 4 th. Brittany placed 6 th individually and Peter placed 8 th individually. 98 youth competed in the competition and 26 teams. The consumer committee also announced their reasons placing and Peter Fasolino placed 1 st and Brittany Stone placed 3 rd. Coaches were Debbie Fasolino and Micah Holcombe. Share the Fun: Katherine Wood competed in the poetry/prose competition and placed 10th. Dorothy Wood served as coach for Katherine Wood. Fashion Storyboards: Lauren Janke created jewelry for her storyboard and placed 4th. 1 st place winners won a sewing machine. Lauren s mom, Sherry Kell, served as a coach for fashion storyboard. State Photography: Daniel Barron, Emma Coffman, Brandon Hoelscher, Brooke Hoelscher & Katherine Wood. Emma Coffman won Best of Show with her plant/flora picture. Others doing well were Emma: Animals Domestic- Blue, Details and Macro-Red, Dominant Color-Blue, Elements of Design-Blue, Food-Blue, Marine/Aquatics-Blue, Night Photography-Blue, Storyboard-Blue, and Theme-Blue; Katherine Wood: Digital Darkroom- White; Brooke Hoelscher: Nature/Landscape-Red; Daniel Barron: People-Blue. Food Challenge: The team of Lacy Ide, Taylor Jacobs, and Jennifer Ramthun competed in the Food Challenge. Kathy Ide served as coach for the team. Healthy Lifestyles: The team of Taylor Harris, Lacy Ide, and Taylor Jacobs competed and won 2 nd place and Taylor Jacobs received 6th place individual and Lacy and Taylor Harris tied and placed 8 th individually. The team of Emma Coffman, Brandon Stone, and Brittany Stone competed and won 1st place and Brandon Stone received 1 st place individually, Brittany placed 2 nd high individual and Emma Coffman placed 10 th individual. Over 99 youth competed in the Healthy Lifestyles Contest. Micah Holcombe served as coach for the team. 4-H Quilt Challenge: The 4-H Quilt Challenge is a Clothing and Textiles community service project in which individuals, teams groups or clubs complete a quilt using the challenge fabric and donate it to a charity of their choice. Over 45 quilts were made this year. The Holland 4-H Club program made 1 quilt and placed 1 st place in their category and Best of Show among all the quilts.
10 Bell County 4-H July/August Newsletter Page 10 COUNTY COUNCIL MEETING IN SEPTEMBER The Bell County 4-H County Council will meet on September 24, 2012 at 6:30 p.m. at the County Extension Office Meeting Room. Remember the council delegate and the president of the club are the two representatives from your club who come to the meeting and are voting delegates for the club. All 4-H members are welcome though! It will be a lot of fun, so come and learn about the county 4-H program and vote on exciting new 4-H opportunities.
