This will be one more day and one more dance!!!! Cost for county camp will be $125 which includes: meals, lodging, transportation, and a T-Shirt. Registration forms are available soon on the Bell County 4-H website! Deadline is May 21st. It is first come, first serve so get them in quick! 2 APRIL 2010 BELL COUNTY 4-H NEWS PAGE 2 COUNTY COUNCIL We will be electing officers for county council at the April meeting so please start thinking of what officer position you would like to run for. County Council will be held on April 27th at 6:30pm at the Extension Office Meeting Room! This meeting is MANDATORY FOR ALL PRESIDENTS AND COUNCIL DELEGATES in order to elect officers! If you cannot attend, you MUST find a replacement from your club to represent you at the club meeting! The county council will not be able to vote on officers unless at least 50% of the clubs are present! Don t forget to come!!! Don t forget to BRING COKE TABS!! Our coke tab totals show that 4-His Glory is currently in the lead and Holland is just right behind them. This is the last monthly council meeting to bring coke tabs for the club party contest. This months theme is Travel through Generations - Everyone wears different decades-contest prizes will be given for dressing up. Healthy Lifestyles Contest NEW!!! Texas 4-H Roundup is inviting all Intermediates and seniors to be part of a new contest for Texas 4-H Roundup. The Healthy Lifestyles contest is set up like the Consumer contest but involves anything to do with food and nutrition and health. This contest will be a fun and new thing for Bell County 4-H. If you are interested in being part of the Healthy Lifestyles Contest and you are ages 11-18, please come to the information meeting on April 19 th at 6pm at the Extension Office Board Room. Youth Leadership Program We will be starting a new public speaking and leadership class in May for the Toastmasters Youth Leadership Program. Participants must be 12 before August 31, 2009 to participate. The fee for the program is $10 which includes your booklet, project pin, and some meals/snacks during the program. Only 15 people will be accepted into the new class and it is first come, first serve. Please call the Extension Office to sign up. You will be sent an if you are accepted. The first meeting will be on May 10, 2010 at 6pm, at the Office. Meetings will probably be on Monday or Tuesday s during May and various times during June.

3 PAGE 3 NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK National Volunteer Week is April 18-24, Recognize your volunteers this month in your club or organizations! Sometimes we take our volunteers for granted! April is National Volunteer Month and we want to say thank you to all of our volunteers that make 4-H possible! Thanks for being great volunteers and helping teach 4-H members value skills they can use for the rest of their lives! You are valuable to us! THANK YOU! We are asking 4-H members to write an essay about how much a 4-H leader/parent/ volunteer has helped them or made a difference in their lives and the 4-H office will selected a couple of essays to be published in the Temple Telegram during the week we recognize our 4-H volunteers. The winners will also receive 10 4-H bucks. Essays are due by to mlkarber@ag.tamu.edu by April 13th. Essays should only be 400 words or less or we will have to trim them down! Thanks SENIOR AWARDS APPLICATION: Graduating seniors and seniors who are graduating in 2011, who are members of 4-H, may apply to receive a Senior Award, to be presented at the Bell County 4-H Awards Banquet on September 11, Seniors must have been active and meet the requirements listed on the application. Seniors will now have a variety of awards to choose from. Applications are due April 23, Bell County 4-H Scholarship: Bell County 4-H members who have completed a recordbook may apply for the Bell County 4-H Scholarship. The Scholarship Application is due April 23, MAB Meeting We will be having a MAB meeting on May 19 th at 6pm at the CEO. This meeting will be a major meeting to vote on Bylaws changes and vote on the budget. There will also be a 4-H update to help club managers notify the members. We require ALL CLUB MANAGERS AND ASST CLUB MANAGERS TO ATTEND!!!! We must have over 50% of the clubs to vote from each of the clubs. If you cannot attend, you MUST find a replacement from your club to represent you at the club meeting! Each club is allowed a maximum of 3 votes.

4 PAGE 4 NOTICE: All 4-H members applying for awards (Gold, Silver or Bronze Star; Rookie, Honor Roll, All-Star Letterman; Danforth or Outstanding Community Service, must submit the appropriate paperwork and applications on May 3, 2010!!! Award Interviews will be on May 19-20, 2010 at the Bell County Extension Office. Record books for county competition will be due June 21, Awards age based on age as of August 31, You do not have to complete a recordbook for all awards. Some awards such as the Rookie, All Star, Honor Roll, and Letterman do not require a recordbook. ALL AWARD APPLICATIONS ARE AVAILABLE ON THE BELL COUNTY 4-H WEBSITE: Click on Bell County 4-H Website then 4-H Awards. OUTSTANDING LEADER AWARD: The Outstanding Leader Award chosen from the 4-H member requires an essay no longer than 1 page. The ESSAYS ARE DUE AUGUST 1st but may be turned in at any time during the 4-H year! The essay should include the following: Date Name of Person Making Nomination Leader Nominated Why do you think this leader is an outstanding leader? What does this leader do that is outstanding? Examples: Teaches others new projects, takes 4-Her s on tours, leads club, etc. How has this leader helped you? How has this leader helped others? 4-H Banquet and Slideshow The 4-H Banquet is set for September 11, 2010, so please mark your calendar. The banquet cost will be FREE. We also need pictures for the slideshow. Pictures can be ed to mlkarber@ag.tamu.edu or burned on to a CD or flash drive and dropped by the Extension Office. The last day to accept pictures will be August 1st. Pictures are for the slideshow which is a great opportunity to show what clubs and 4-H members have been doing all year. Please make sure and give pictures so your club and your family are in the slideshow! BCYF Scholarship Do not forget the Bell County Youth Scholarship! It is due April 9th! You can get the application of the Bell County 4-H Website by going to and clicking on Bell County 4-H Website and then clicking on either Youth Fair or Scholarships.

5 PAGE 5 CLOVER KID FAIR Clover Kids are budding 4-H members ages 5-8 years old who are enrolled with a community 4-H Club. The Clover Kid Fair is a chance for them to participate in a fair just for Clover Kids and show what they have been learning! This is a great opportunity for them to become more familiar with what to expect as a real 4-H member down the road. The event will be on May 8th at the County Extension Office from 10am to 1pm this year. All parents and family members are welcome to attend. Youth can enter Food, Textiles, Creative Arts, Photography, etc. (See entry forms for all entries.) At the end of the event, residents and guests are able to sample the baked goodies. Clovers need to provide enough for samples. Entry forms are due at the County Extension Office by May 3, Entry forms can be found on the Bell County 4-H Website. (Go to Bell County Extension Website and click on Bell County 4-H Website on the front page). For more information or if you would like to help, contact Barbara Wood at This is not a competitive event. Each clover kid will receive a participation ribbon for each entry. There are no entry fees. Bell County 4-H Ambassadors Applications for the Bell County 4-H Ambassadors program are being accepted at the CEO. If you are interested in becoming an Ambassador, the requirements are: Be at least 14 years of age as of August 31 on the year of application. Example: the 4-H youth must be 14 on August 31, 2010, to be eligible to be a 4-H Ambassador for the H year. If a 4-H youth is 13 at the time of the application deadline in May, they may still apply if they will reach their 14 th birthday before August 31 st. Must have been a member of 4-H for a minimum of two years at the time of submitting the application. (Exception: May apply if less than 2 years but acceptance will be based on their involvement the previous year and the number applying for ambassador positions the current year. - A recordbook submission from the previous year year may also be asked of if applying). Acceptance will be depending on Advisors and/or County Extension Agents. Submit a complete application, due on May 3, A formal interview will be given after all applications have been submitted. Members will be notified for interview times. Interviews will be formal dress. (Interviews are set for May 19-20) Meet all activity requirements by the application deadline (sometime in June) of the current 4-H year to be considered for renewal Youth Range Workshop, June 20- June 25. For more information, contact the County Extension Office. You need to APPLY NOW to get a spot. First come first serve on applications.

6 PAGE 6 4-H BUCKS Do you want to be rewarded for your involvement in 4-H? 4-H wants to show you we care and we are providing you an opportunity to be rewarded for your involvement with COOL PRIZES! Throughout the year, you will receive a 4-H buck or 2 bucks or maybe even 5 bucks for certain activities or contests you participate in. You must keep up with your dollars and at the end of the year; you can redeem your 4-H bucks for 4-H prizes. The 4-H Buck Catalog will be available on the Bell County 4-H Website. Due to the lack of redemption of 4-H bucks the last time to turn in bucks will be May 28th. This means ALL 4-H bucks must be redeemed by this date. 4-H bucks will NOT rollover for 4-H members after May 28th. An order form will be included in the catalog and bucks must be turned in with order form to process order. Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery. Banquet/Awards Committee If you would like to help with the banquet or awards, please come to the meeting on April 6, 2010 at 6pm for the committee meeting. We will be going over 4-H awards criteria, applications, and discussing banquet Bell County 4-H Horse Certification/Validation It s that time of year again; we must certify our 4-H ers horses for the 2010 show season. Just to refresh everyone s memory, each 4-H-er must complete a Project Certification/Validation form (Part 1 of green form) for their horses and pay $10.00 per horse to validate that horse for competition in your family name and turn in at our office by Friday, April 30 th at 5:00 pm. Additionally, you will submit a copy of your horse s registration papers or a Grade Horse Identification & Certification Form (yellow form) with your Project Certification/Validation forms. All of this information will remain on file in our office. Remember a grade horse is a horse that does not have the pedigree to be registered. It is not a horse that once was registered and now the papers don t exist! The Futurity Project Nomination forms (Part 2 of green form) should be completed and returned by April 30th because I have to send it to Brett Scott by May 8th along with a Futurity Entry County Summary Sheet. This is a critical deadline for those of you wishing to show futurity Horses at the State 4-H Show in Abilene. All of this information should be on file in our office by April 30, 2010 at 5:00 pm. 8 PAGE 8 TAMU Show Cattle Camp Links to 2010 CAMPS Horse Judging Camp Livestock Judging Camp Aggieland Lamb & Goat Camps Howard College Goat Camp State Fair of Texas Broiler 4-H members who plan to show broilers in Dallas should contact Randall or Pam no later than May 28, 2010 at State Fair Tag Orders Due 4-H members who plan to show a lamb, goat, or barrow at the State Fair of Texas in 2010 must order validation tags for the number of animals they plan to validate no later than April 15, Call Randall or Pam at the Extension Office to order your tags at THE STATE FAIR of TEXAS Do you plan to show in Dallas in 2010? Any 4-H members who plan on showing at the State Fair of Texas and need help locating or selecting a project such as a lamb, goat, barrow or steer, should contact Randall Rakowitz at as soon as possible. He will be glad to assist you in the process of locating and helping you to select your animal(s). Remember, we will validate these animals in June, so do not delay in securing your project. 12 PAGE 12 Congratulations District Consumer Decision & Nutrition Quiz Bowl District Consumer Decision Making Judging Contest: Junior Team: Seth Brown, John Fasolino, Wesley Ide, and McKinley Kasberg. The junior team placed 2nd out of 7 teams. John Fasolino placed 1 st overall individually out of 23 junior participants. Intermediate participants included Whitney Bushing, Selena Drake, Nathaniel Fasolino, Taylor Harris, Lacy Ide, Taylor Jacobs, Billy Wood, and Katherine Wood. Intermediate team: Taylor Harris, Lacy Ide, Nathaniel Fasolino, and Katherine Wood placed 2nd at the contest out of 15 teams. Taylor Jacobs placed 1 st overall individually out of 48 intermediate participants. The two intermediate teams were 1 st and 2 nd in reasons classes. District Nutrition Quiz Bowl: The team of Seth Brown, Nathaniel Fasolino, and Billy Wood received 1 st place. The team of John Fasolino, Katherine Wood and Margaret Wood received 2 nd place. The senior team made of Brandon Stone, Brittany Stone, Dorothy Wood, and Elizabeth Wood placed 2 nd and will advance to state competition in June 2010.

Make sure you are attending the 4-H club meetings! Club managers: Do not forget to turn in your club reports as well. Safety Day Safety Day will be held in Killeen at the Convention and Civic Center on May 11 th. If you are interested in helping take pictures or do small errands and help at the Safety Day, please Micah at mlkarber@ag.tamu.edu.
