County Council will be held on April 28nd at 6:30pm at the Extension Office Meeting Room! This meeting is MANDATORY FOR ALL PRESIDENTS AND COUNCIL DELEGATES in order to elect officers! If you cannot attend, you MUST find a replacement from your club to represent you at the club meeting! The county council will not be able to vote on officers unless at least 50% of the clubs are present! Don t forget to come!!! We will also be celebrating Earth Day and 4-H members will be planting plants to give to a living center for county community service.. 2 APRIL 2009 BELL COUNTY 4-H NEWS PAGE 2 Leadership Workshop April 25 will be the leadership workshop for Bell County. This includes all kids who want to be a leader. We want ALL kids to come and learn more about 4-H and leadership. Sessions include teamwork and leadership games, learn about your personality, public speaking presented by the Toast Masters, and table and social etiquette. The workshop will be held at the County Extension Office and will be held from 9am-2pm. Cost for workshop is $5 or H Bucks and RSVP must be made by April 24th. Lunch will be included! The leadership workshop is open for 4-H members from ages Would you like to make a difference in the community?? The Bell County Youth Board is for senior level teens from years of age. The Youth Board helps identify issues for teens in the community and helps teach emergency preparedness at the local Safety Days in Killeen and Belton. If you are interested, please call the Bell County Extension Office at or Micah Holcombe at mlkarber@ag.tamu.edu. Deadline to notify interest will be April 6th. The application is located on the Bell County 4-H website. The first meeting will be on April 9th at 6pm at the CEO. DOG PROJECT LEADER TRAINING CALLING ALL ADULT LEADERS! Bell County 4-H will be starting a Dog Project in the fall and we are asking all leaders from each of the clubs (does not have to be club managers) to come and learn about the dog project. Come and learn how to teach 4-H members about the dog project and opportunities. We ask that only adults attend the meeting, April 7th at 6:30pm at the CEO. Please RSVP by 4pm on April the 6th. Recordbook Workshop Do you want to apply for 4-H awards or a scholarship and cannot because you have not completed a recordbook!? Well, you are in luck! Bell County 4-H will be holding a Recordbook Training Workshop on how to complete a recordbook! Recordbooks are not always boring, so tips will be given on how to make it more fun and meaningful to you! The recordbook training will be held on April 14, 2009 at the Bell County Extension Office Meeting Room at 6pm. Please bring a sack supper and we will provide the drinks and dessert!
3 PAGE 3 NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK National Volunteer Week is April 19-25, Recognize your volunteers this month in your club or organizations! Sometimes we take our volunteers for granted! April is National Volunteer Month and we want to say thank you to all of our volunteers that make 4-H possible! Thanks for being great volunteers and helping teach 4-H members value skills they can use for the rest of their lives! You are valuable to us! THANK YOU! We are asking 4-H members to write an essay about how much a 4-H leader/parent/ volunteer has helped them or made a difference in their lives and the 4-H office will selected a couple of essays to be published in the Temple Telegram during the week we recognize our 4-H volunteers. The winners will also receive 10 4-H bucks. Essays are due by to mlkarber@ag.tamu.edu by April 13th. Essays should only be 400 words or less or we will have to trim them down! Thanks! Photography Project Pictures The photos from the Temple Mall have been taken down and are ready to be picked up at the County Extension Office. All photographers are asked to write a thank you note to the Temple Mall for allowing them to have their photos displayed at the Mall. Thank you notes are to be delivered to the County Extension Office in order to pick up your photos. No stamp is needed. Congratulations to the following 4-H members who have advanced to state! STATE PHOTOGRAPHERS: Jared Burtchell, Daisy Klassy, Danielle Fasolino, Dorothy Wood, Tyler Coufal, and Brooke Hoelscher. National 4-H Congress The 2009 National 4-H Congress will be Thursday, November 26 through Tuesday, December 1 at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta, Georgia. This is for seniors ages as of 8/31/08. 4 PAGE 4 District Roundup will be May 2nd at the TSTC campus in Waco, TX. Registration: 9:00am, Start Time: 9:30am, Judges report to the TSTC Auditorium at 9:00 am. Share the Fun contestants need to report to their rooms by 9:05 am to find order and set up. Awards for the participants will be in the rooms. GOOD LUCK! District Roundup NOTICE: All 4-H members applying for awards (Gold, Silver or Bronze Star; Rookie, Honor Roll, All-Star Letterman; Danforth or Outstanding Community Service, must submit the appropriate paperwork and applications on May 1, 2009!!! Award Interviews will be on May 13-14, 2009 at the Bell County Extension Office. Record books for county competition will be due June 22, Awards age based on age as of August 31, ALL AWARD APPLICATIONS ARE AVAILABLE ON THE BELL COUNTY 4-H WEBSITE: CHANGES TO AWARDS GOLD STAR: The Gold Star will now be called the District Gold Star. A County Gold Star will also be given. The County Gold Star Award has the same qualifications as the District Gold Star. 4-H members are unable to apply for this award because it is determined by the award committee. SENIOR PLAQUE APPLICATION: Now called a Senior Award. Graduating seniors, who are members of 4-H, may apply to receive a Senior Award, to be presented at the Bell County 4-H Awards Banquet. Seniors must have been active and meet the requirements listed on the application. Seniors will now have a variety of awards to choose from. Applications are due March 23, This also includes juniors who will be seniors for OUTSTANDING LEADER AWARD: The Outstanding Leader Award chosen from the 4-H member requires an essay no longer than 1 page. The ESSAYS ARE DUE AUGUST 1st but may be turned in at any time during the 4-H year! The essay should include the following: Name of Person Making Nomination Leader Nominated Date Why do you think this leader is an outstanding leader? What does this leader do that is outstanding? Examples: Teaches others new projects, takes 4-Her s on tours, leads club, etc. How has this leader helped you? How has this leader helped others?
5 PAGE 5 CLOVER KID FAIR Clover Kids are budding 4-H members ages 5-8 years old who are enrolled with a community 4-H Club. The Clover Kid Fair is a chance for them to participate in a fair just for Clover Kids and show what they have been learning! This is a great opportunity for them to become more familiar with what to expect as a real 4-H member down the road. The event will be on May 16th and at the Garden Estates assisted living community in Temple again this year. The residents and guests will come out to see the exhibits. Youth can enter Food, Textiles, Creative Arts, Photography, etc. (See entry forms for all entries.) At the end of the event, residents and guests are able to sample the baked goodies. Entry forms are due at the County Extension Office by May 1, Entry forms can be found on the Bell County 4-H Website. (Go to Bell County Extension Website and click on Bell County 4-H Website on the front page). For more information or if you would like to help, contact Barbara Wood at This is not a competitive event. Each clover kid will receive a participation ribbon for each entry. There are no entry fees. Have you ever felt like you do not have the right survivor tips and tricks to make it through a club meeting!? This Club Manager Survivor 101 Camp will help you learn the tricks of the trade of club managing! Make sure and wear your camouflage and be ready to learn true survival tips for club meetings! It is going to be a fun and an interactive day! Lunch will be served.
6 PAGE 6 County 4-H Community Service Project We are collecting dry milk for the Helping Hands Ministry this month. You can bring the dry milk to the County Extension Office or to the County Council Meeting. The last day to accept dry milk will be April 24th. BCYF Scholarship Do not forget the Bell County Youth Scholarship! It is due April 17th! You can get the application of the Bell County 4-H Website by going to and clicking on Bell County 4-H Website and then clicking on either Youth Fair or Scholarships. State Fair Tag Orders Due 4-H members who plan to show a lamb, goat, or barrow at the State Fair of Texas in 2009 must order validation tags for the number of animals they plan to validate no later than April 15, Call Randall or Pam at the Extension Office to order your tags at THE STATE FAIR of TEXAS Do you plan to show in Dallas in 2009? Any 4-H members who plan on showing at the State Fair of Texas and need help locating or selecting a project such as a lamb, goat, barrow or steer, should contact Randall Rakowitz at as soon as possible. He will be glad to assist you in the process of locating and helping you to select your animal(s). Remember, we will validate these animals in June, so do not delay in securing your project. Also, keep reading the 4-H News and be watching for the summer livestock camp opportunities across the state.
7 PAGE 7 Congratulations 2009 Major Livestock Show Participants Bell County 4-H has just concluded the 2009 major livestock show season and we've had a Terrific Year! All of our youth have put many hard hours in working with their projects and we would like to recognize those who were fortunate this year. For those of you who participated and didn't place as high as you'd hoped, I encourage you to keep trying and be dedicated to your projects.
