5 PAGE 5 The District 8 4-H Food Challenge is a unique opportunity to participate in an innovative food and nutrition competition. The 4-H Food Challenge, similar to the popular television show Iron Chef, brings fun, learning, application of knowledge and skills, and group competition together at one event. The great news is that this is a state contest now for seniors!!!! At your table, they will have all the ingredients and amounts on the table and no directions! You are to come up with a dish with what ingredients you have on the table! General Guidelines: Please note a few changes from last year: The Food Challenge has two age divisions: Junior/Intermediate and Senior. Each county may enter two (2) teams in each age division for a total of four (4) teams per county. 4-H Clubs are unlimited in teams as long as the age division teams are appropriate. Food Challenge Judges will be allowed to ask questions. There is a District 8 Scorecard and Worksheet for Junior/Intermediate age division. Seniors will have the ability to participate in both the Food Show AND the Food Challenge. (Juniors and Intermediates will still only be able to participate in the Food Challenge.) There will no longer be a poster contest. The Nutrition Quiz Bowl will not be held on this date. Each team will provide equipment box if able (County Office will have 6 boxes available). If you are interested in having a team or the food and nutrition project, the information about the project and entry forms will be available on the Bell County 4-H Website at: and Click on Bell County 4-H (it is under the project link). County Food Show is October 5th, Entry forms are due September 20, 2010 Nutrition Quiz Bowl March 5, 2010 at McLennan Community College. This year Bell county 4-H will be trick or treating for food items to resupply our area food banks. We want to invite everyone in the county to participate in this project with the goal of collecting as much food as possible! For those of you who cannot help gather the food, there is no need to get out into the cold; we will be ringing your door bell asking for food donations. Donations can be anything from canned foods, cracker boxes, gravy mixes, stuffing, rice, Jell-O and pudding, to dessert and hot coco mixes, or a bag of flour and sugar. If you are going to participate, we need you to bring plastic and paper shopping bags. Lunch will be provided for helpers! We do not charge dues to participate in 4-H, so we ask that you help us by selling tickets to our main fundraiser. In 2009, we will launch a new event designed with the outdoorsman in mind. Our event is called the Hunter s Spectacular and will be held October 16, 2010 at the Bell County Expo Center. We will have lots of fun things for the whole family at the event including a meal, silent auction, live auction, vendors, and even have games. We will also have a drawing for 20 guns, binoculars, hunting equipment, t-shirts for sale and lots of other fun prizes. For the young people, we have games and activities and even a cake walk. A live auction of outdoor items will take place that evening as well as a silent auction with the hunter in mind. Also, on October 16th from 10am-6pm the Outdoor Expo, sponsored by the Temple Daily Telegram will be going on. 4-H supporters who bring their ticket stubs with them can attend for only $2.00 per person and see lots of fun booths & vendors. We need our 4-H members to sell tickets to the event. Your club manager will be asking each of you to participate and we want you to know that we utilize the funds raised for the total Bell County 4-H program.which includes you! We are able to help offset the costs of many events, camps, livestock supplies, workshops, contests, and leadership activities through these funds as well as provide scholarships each year to qualifying 4-H members. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to call the Extension Office and visit with Randall about the event. Choosing the right animal we re here to help! Anyone who needs help finding a lamb, goat, or swine project for the Bell County Youth Fair or Major shows in 2011 should contact Randall as soon as possible. 12 PAGE 12 The Texas 4-H Roundup Logo and Theme Contest is Back!!! It seems like the 2010 Texas 4-H Roundup just ended, and Summer just began, but moving into August planning is already underway to make the 2011 Texas 4-H Roundup even bigger and better. The first step in making the 2011 Texas 4-H Roundup a memorable one is getting the logo and theme that will help provide the groundwork for the rest of the year. Last year's theme, "The Road Goes on Forever and 4-H Never Ends" help set the stage for the 2010 Roundup and truly provide a road of new opportunities that youth explored. It is the hopes of Texas 4-H faculty and staff that this year will be no different. We highly encourage individuals, groups, and even counties to take advantage of this opportunity to put their mark on the 2011 Texas 4-H Roundup. Below are a few items that are important if you are interested in submitting an entry. - Deadline for all entries are due September 6, Entries may be hand drawn or submitted in a.jpg format Extracurricular Activities and 4-H Eligibility Issues Starting September 1, 2010, all 4-H youth, including youth in public, private, and/or home school, must adhere to the following guidelines regarding extracurricular activities and academic eligibility: Complete a Declaration of Eligibility Form If you are in public or private school, your form will be sent automatically to your school. If you are home schooled, you will be required to come to the office to pick one up and fill it out. OR Name of 4-H member must appear on a list of eligible students to participate in a specific extracurricular activity signed by the school principal or designee. This list is usually used during the youth fair instead of filling out a form for each student. Extracurricular activities through 4-H that require a Declaration of Eligibility Form or List of Eligible names: All 4-H Competitive Events (this does include photography, Bell County Youth Fair, Participation in ANY 4-H event or activity that would require them to be absent from school. Consistent with the UIL rules, the Texas 4-H Program has adopted a three school week waiting period upon change in status of school enrollment (ie from public to private or private to home or home to public or home to private) before the 4-H member is eligible for extracurricular activity. As a result of the 81 st Legislation, no significant changes were made in TEA or UIL rules and procedures. The 76 th Legislature passed House Bill 3573 with 3major changes in regard to school eligibility and extracurricular activities: Authorizes the Commissioner of Education (instead of State Board of Education) to adopt for extracurricular activities and to approve or disapprove UIL rules and procedures. Suspension period of no pass, no play changed to 3 SCHOOL weeks. Authorizes local boards of trustees to adopt policies that establish the number of times that students may be absent to participate in extracurricular activities. It also requires that the policies allow at least ten absences for extracurricular participation but does not cap the maximum number of days that may be missed for extracurricular participation.

13 PAGE 13 Graduating Seniors It is that time again for graduating seniors to start applying for college and filling out scholarships! Seniors need to apply for their colleges/universities NOW!!! Acceptance for some schools will come as early as November. It is better on a scholarship to have been accepted already to a school. So apply NOW for school!!! Scholarships are also starting to come open and ready for applications. Make sure and watch the newsletter and the Bell County 4-H Website for those scholarship application deadlines. It is always being updated with new scholarships and deadlines. If you are interested in learning about scholarships available through 4-H or how to apply for a scholarship, you can attend the scholarship training, which will be held at the County Extension Office Board Room on November 9th at 6pm. This training will be invaluable to learn about what scholarship donors look for in scholarships, how to write an effective essay, or how to fill out effective information on your scholarship application. RECORDBOOKS Have you ever thought about doing a recordbook? A recordbook is good for those who want to keep records of their 4-H career, win awards for resumes, or help you with filling out your scholarship applications. All seniors who complete a recordbook say that it helped them with filling out their scholarship applications a lot. We have even helped create a format that ties directly to the 4-H Foundation Scholarship Form. How easy is that!!! Recordbooks are getting easier to fill out and complete these days! If you would like to learn about how to complete a recordbook, the Bell County 4-H will be hosting 2 workshops this year to help you do a recordbook. The first workshop will help with how to start a recordbook and how to record effective information for recordbooks and will be in November and the second workshop will be in April and will be the second part which is how to fill out the forms and do tables and what to actually do to fill out the recordbook. If you are interested, please attend the first recordbook training on: October 21, 2010 at 6-8pm in the CEO We had a great year for recordbooks this year!
