1 4-H Club Meetings for October 2015 Lipan 4-H - Thursday, October 1 st at 6:30 pm at the Community Center Tolar 4-H - Tuesday, October 6 th at 6:30 pm at the First National Bank Community Room. Sharp Shooters 4-H - Meets every Tuesday of the month at 6:00 pm at the Reunion Fairgrounds. Regular business meeting in on the 1 st Tuesday of each month. Young Riders - Monday, October 5 th at 6:30 pm at the Reunion Fairgrounds Exhibit Hall. Cornerstone 4-H - Monday, October 12 th, at 4:15 pm at Cornerstone Christian Academy (CCA has moved to the Church of Christ across from Granbury High School) Lake Granbury Community 4-H - Monday, October 12 th, at 7:00 pm at the Annex 1 Meeting Room Need a Pumpkin? Please support the Lipan 4-H Club at their Second Annual Pumpkin Patch Fundraiser on Saturday, October 3 rd. You may get your pumpkins at the Community Center form 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. There will be a photo booth, crafts, and more.

2 Livestock News for October Major Stock Show Entry Night We will have our Major Stock Show Entry Night on Wednesday, November 4, 2015 from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm at the Annex 1 meeting room. Broiler Orders If you want to exhibit chickens at the 2016 HCJLS you will need to come by the office and place your broiler orders by 4:00 pm on Thursday, October 8, The cost of the birds this year is $1.67 per bird. You must pay for your birds when you order them. Checks can be made out to HCLRA. 4-H Skillathon/Judging Dates The 4-H Ag Project Coalition has set some dates for the fall for Skillathon Practices. In addition we are also going to try to have some Livestock and Meat Judging Practices in conjunction. The dates are: October 18 th - 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm November 21 st - 4-H Stock Show Skillathon Workshop There will be A Skillathon Workshop on October 26, 2015 at the fairgrounds starting at 6:30 pm. This is open to all 4-H & FFA members who want to learn about the Skillathon contest at the Hood County Junior Livestock Show. Please RSVP by October 23, Fall Major Validation Dates The Major Show Validation Dates for Sheep, Goats, and Heifers have been set for: October 21 - Major Lamb & Goat Validation 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm October 28 - Major Heifer Validation 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm Leadership Opportunity at State Fair 4-H needs volunteers to help man the 4-H/FFA booth at the State Fair of Texas. 3 County Validation Dates This years county validation dates for exhibiting lambs, goats, swine, and heifers etc.. the Hood County Junior Livestock Show are as follows: November 9 th November 10 th November 12 th November 14 th (For Rabbits Only) December 5 th 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm, Lipan - Ag Barn 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm, Tolar - Ag Barn 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm, Granbury - Ag Barn 8:00 am until Noon, Reunion Fairgrounds 8:00 am until Noon, Rabbit Validation at Reunion 2016 Hood County Junior Livestock Show Judges Rabbit - Justin Nash Goats - Eric Zimmerman Lambs - Justin Jonas Broilers - Daniel Lee Swine - Zac Wilcox Ag Mechanics - Jordan Smith HCJLRS Rules The rules for the 2016 County Stock show can be found on our website at: County Stock Show 3-Meeting Rule If you want to show at the 2016 Hood County Junior Livestock Show you must attend 3-4-H Club Business Meetings prior to the show. This applies to ALL participants: livestock, family living, & ag mechanics. Livestock Raisers Association The HCLRA meets on the 3 rd Thursday of every month at 7:30 pm at the fairgrounds. We need more 4-H families to get involved with this group. They make the rules for the county show, up-keep the facilities and provide us a place and opportunity to show our projects. 4 Holiday Classic The Holiday Classic is a free clinic and jackpot show held at the Bell County Expo in Belton. The event is hosted by the District 8 County Agents and is designed for young and early career showers. The event is open to all 4-H & FFA students and a free supper will also be served that evening. For more details contact Marty. Calf Scramble If you are interested in the Calf Scramble at any of the 2016 Major Stock Shows please contact Marty. A few things to consider is that you must show at the stock show the next year, most are for breeding animals, and there are recordbook requirements, and minimum age requirements. FCS Projects for the Fall Food & Nutrition Project Thank you to everyone who came out for the Food Challenge Kickoff meeting in September. We had 68 people there! If you were unable to attend, please contact Mrs. Langdon as soon as possible if you need help finding a team! We will be hosting some County- Wide project experiences. Mrs. Langdon will send out an with those dates soon! County Food Challenge is tentatively set for Sunday, November 8th, More details to come! Check the county website for more details and resources for food challenge! Food Challenge & Consumer Decision Making at Heart of Texas Fair If you are interested in participating in the Food Challenge or Consumer Decision Making at the Heart of Texas Fair on October 10, please call the Extension office for details!

5 Child Protection Training After the passing of Senate Bill 1414, it is now mandated that any 4-H volunteers chaperoning 4-H youth at overnight events such as camps, judging trips, etc. and/or helping with multiday camps complete a Child Protection Training. This training is located on 4-H Connect. When you log into your personal profile you will see a tab for trainings. If you click on tab for trainings you will open up the training session. If you have any questions let us know. We encourage all or our volunteers to complete the Child Protection Training. Text Updates for 4-H Reminders & Events Are interested in receiving text messages on important upcoming 4-H events or reminders throughout the year? You can now receive important messages about 4-H using your cell phone just to to receive messages about 4-H. Educational programs of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service are open to all people without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, genetic information or veteran status.

6 4-H Awards As we start the new 4-H year we want to remind you about the awards you can apply for at the end of the year. Non Competitive - base on completing certain activities: 4-H Rookie - Any 1 st year 4-H er can apply 4-H Honor Roll - Junior 4-H members can apply 4-H All Star - Intermediate 4-H members can apply 4-H Letterman - Senior 4-H members can apply Completive - based on record book, applications, interviews - 2 of each may be awarded: Silver Spur - Junior 4-H ers can apply Gold Spur - Intermediate 4-H'ers can apply Gold Star - Senior 4-H ers can apply

7 It s that time of year again to re-enroll in 4-H Connect for the new 4-H year. We will still be using the 4-H Connect online enrollment process, the web address is If you were in 4-H this past year you already have a profile. Just enter your password and re-enroll. If your forgot your password DO NOT SET UP A NEW PROFILE. When you get to the login page enter your that you put on your 4-H enrollment form then click I forgot my password it will send you a password and then you can log into your profile. When you re-enroll you will have to pay the $20 participation fee. Please pay this with a credit card or e-check. If you have any questions please let us know. Win a POA Texas 4-H Essay Contest Texas Pony of Americas Club is pleased announce the 2015 Win A POA 4-H Essay Contest. This is a statewide 4-H contest open to registered Texas 4-H club members between the ages of 9 (or entered in the third grade) and 16 as of August 31. The purpose of this contest is to acquaint 4-H members with the Pony of the Americas breed, horse ownership and care in general. The winner will receive a registered POA, halter and lead rope, a Junior Membership for a year in the Texas POA Club, and various other donated prizes. In order to enter the contest, 4-Hers must complete an essay, questionnaire and something creative, as well as provide a letter of recommendation from their 4-H leader. The pony will be awarded during the Texas Pony of the Americas Club Turkey Trot IBC Show to be held at Navarro County Exposition Center in Corsicana, Texas, November 21-22, KAUFMAN COUNTY 4-H DOG PROJECT WORKSHOP AND SHOW SERIES Kaufman County Fair Grounds October 5, 2015 November 7, 2015 Entry fee is $5.00 per class. (Late entries $10.00 per class. Open to youth 8 and in 3rd grade to 18 years of age. One does not need to be a member of 4-H to participate; however classes are aligned with the Texas 4-H Dog show and AKC rules. Judging will be done according to the Texas 4-H Dog Show regulations. A copy of the current regulations will be available to view at the entry office or you can visit the Texas 4-H Dog Show Webpage at h.tamu.edu/dogshow.
