We will be cooking hot dogs and cooling down with snow cones. There will be kickball games going for you to jump in and have some fun. Come catch up with some of your friends you haven t seen since summer. Attendance at the Kickoff Party will be counted as a meeting. 2 Page 2 Swine Clinic 2 If you have not attended a Swine Clinic yet this year, your final chance to do so is on Monday, August 12, starting at 6:00pm at the Extension Office. The clinic will start promptly at 6:00pm and will cover feeding, nutrition, showmanship, daily care, clipping, and show day preparation. Please remember that all swine exhibitors must attend at least one swine clinic in order for them to be eligible to show their project in the Calhoun County Fair. Sheep and Goat Progress Show The Sheep and Goat Progress Show will be held on August 20th at 6:00pm at the Fairgrounds. Animals are required, and all exhibitors must exhibit all of their Market and Breeding Sheep and Goats in at least one progress show in order for the exhibitor to be eligible to participate in the County Livestock Show. CCF Roaster Pick-Up Roasters will be available for pick up from the Extension Office on August 21st starting at 5:00pm. Please be reminded that birds will be wing banded this year based upon exhibitor/ immediate family. It would be wise to go ahead and place orders for feed at your preferred feed store and making sure your facilities are cleaned, cool, and ready to go. If you have any questions, contact the Extension Office. Fair Rulebooks Online 2013 Calhoun County Fair Rulebooks are available online at calhoun.agrilife.org please make notes of dates upcoming with your project area. Also available online are the 2013 Commercial Heifer Show and Sale Rules.

3 Page 2 Major Sheep and Goat Tag Orders Due August 23rd If you are interested in ordering sheep and/or goat tags for the upcoming Spring 2014 Major Shows, please come by the Extension Office on or before Friday, August 23rd to place your order. If you plan on exhibiting a doe in the Texas Stars Doe Show in San Angelo, or a ewe in the Junior Wether Dam Show at San Antonio, you must also order tags. The cost per tag is $10, and the cost for Validating Breeding Sheep will be $5/hd. Please make all checks payable to PALA. 4-H Registration Information for Year August 16th marks the first day families are able to register for 4-H on 4honline.com. Again, there is a $20 participation fee if you sign up before October 31st. After November 1st, the fee increases to $25. If you are planning on exhibiting an animal project at the Calhoun County Jr. Livestock Show, you MUST be a registered 4-H member. Those families who wish to pay for their membership in cash, rather than using the online payment option, please have your family registered and make sure to select county/club check option, also have your participation fee turned into the Extension Office by September 20th. Returning members please make sure to UPDATE your profile, DO NOT CREATE A NEW PROFILE IF YOU ARE A RETURNING MEMBER! Families are more than welcome to come by the Extension Office if they are in need of help or extra information to register their child for 4-H. Congratulations A big congratulations to Colton Hahn. Colton was the High Point Shotgun Individual at the National 4-H Shoot. Colton was selected as a member of the Texas 4-H Shooting Sport Team that received High Team Honors. Colton also placed 5th overall at the 2013 State 4-H Shooting Games in San Antonio. Also competing in the Texas 4-H Shooting Games from Calhoun County 4-H is Easton Power and Steve McIlwain. Great job and congratulations guys, keep working hard.

4 Page 4 Record Book Trip Info. We will be heading to Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels on August 6th. We will be leaving the office at 7:45am, we will travel to Victoria to meet up with Victoria County 4-H before heading to New Braunfels. Please make sure to bring towels and sun screen. You may bring a sack lunch or money to purchase lunch at the park. Bringing clothes to change into before we leave the park would also be a good idea. If you have any questions, contact Charles at the Extension Office. Council Officer Meeting There will be a mandatory 4-H County Council Officer meeting on Thursday, August 15th at 5:30pm at the Extension Office. We will be discussing officer responsibilities, scheduling and planning monthly meetings, preparing a budget for the current year, as well as discuss fundraising and community service opportunities. All Council Officers are expected to attend this meeting. State Fair of Texas Entries Due Please make sure to have all State Fair of Texas entry forms with payment turned into the Extension Office on or before August 20th. All checks can be made payable to PALA. You can find State Fair of Texas entry forms at The following paperwork is needed: 1. Youth Entry Application 2. Certification Form 3. Completed W-9 CCF Eligibility Requirements Just a reminder to all potential livestock show exhibitors, you must be a registered 4-H member who is in good standing in order to be eligible to participate in the livestock show. Members must attend at least six monthly 4-H meetings in order to be eligible to show, must be passing all classes, and must attend at least one project clinic for hogs, rabbits, and poultry. Cattle, sheep, and goat show participants must exhibit all entered animals (Market and Breeding) in at least one progress show to be eligible. Please note that the meeting rule does not apply to first-time livestock show participants.
