1 B U S I N E S S N A M E Colorado Co. 4-H Updates from your county extension office I N S I D E T H I S I S S U E : Contest Results, Vet Science, Record Books, Officer Elections, State Roundup Leadership Labs & Colorado County 4 -H County Fair Info & Contact Us 2/3 4/5 6/7 M A Y Fifteen 4-H members participated in multiple events of the District 11 Spring Spectacular held in Victoria on Friday and Saturday, April 6 th and 7 th. The Consumer Decision Making contest was the first event of the Spring Spectacular held on Friday afternoon and Colorado County had 11 participants taking part in the contest. The Consumer Decision Making contest is a competitive event that enables 4-H members to practice making decisions based on information about a situation and four available marketplace options. This contest is an opportunity to practice marketplace skills and compare decisions with a panel of judges who are knowledgeable about today s marketplace and the goods and services available. Colorado County had three teams one Senior, Intermediate and Junior. Each team placed 3rd in their age division and also had members place in the top 10. The Senior Team members are Amelia and Robert Stavinoha and Laurece Silcox and Amelia was 1st high individual and Robert was 2nd high individual. This team will advance to Texas State 4-H Roundup to be held in June. The Intermediate team members are Kase Weishuhn, 5th high individual, Jagar Rau, 8th high individual, Juliana Gobert and Malarie Mican. Junior Team members are Jack Dudensing, 5th high individual, Trey (Larry) Silcox, 10 high individual, Lana Potter and Jase Rau. The coaches for these teams are Patti Glaeser and Joan Trojacek. Saturday morning began with 4-H Roundup contests. Brooke and Zane Wanjura, 4-H Horse Club members, participated in the Public Speaking contest. Brooke placed 1st in the Intermediate division, Zane placed 1st in the Senior division and will advance to Texas State 4-H Roundup. The Roundup Share-the-Fun contests followed the educational presentations and a Wild Clover 4-H member excelled in this contest. Abigail Hilley placed 1st in Intermediate Prose/Poetry. Rowdy Kunz, Garwood and Frelsburg 4-H member placed 2nd in the Intermediate Ag Product ID contest. Congratulations to these 4-H members for their accomplishments and Good Luck to those who will be advancing to State competition.

2 P A G E 2 District 11 4-H Photography Contest Results Colorado County Junior and Intermediate 4-H members submitted photos for the D 11 Photography contest and these photos were displayed at Spring Spectacular. There are 15 categories in the Photography contest. In the Junior division, grades 3 rd 5 th, Emma Koeth of Wild Clover 4-H placed 1st in Elements of Design, 2nd in Sports, 3rd in Enhanced, 6th in Nature/Landscape and Travel, 7th in Food and Theme, 9th in Plant/Flora and 10th in Animals- Domestic, Animals-Wildlife and Motion. Intermediate participants are in 6 th through 8 th grades and Colorado County 4-H had four participants. Abigail Hilley of Wild Clover 4-H placed 1 st in Elements of Design, 2nd in Motion and Dominant Color, 3rd in Food, 6th in Enhanced, 8th in Catchall, and 9th in Plant/Flora. Kase Weishuhn of Frelsburg 4-H placed 2nd in Animals-Domestic and 6th in Nature/ Landscape. Jakelyn Primrose, Frelsburg 4-H, placed 6th in Animals-Wildlife and 8th in Theme. Michael Koeth Jr. placed 8th in Details & Macro and 9th in Travel. Congratulations to these 4-H ers for their accomplishments! Veterinary Science Project The Veterinary Science Project will meet on Friday, June 8, 2018 at the Colorado County General Services Building, 305 Radio Lane, Columbus. The meeting will begin at 6:00 p.m. and we will be discussing curriculum, class dates, lesson plans and other ideas for beginning the project. Those that attended the meeting in February and put their contact information on the sign-in sheet, as well as those that contacted the Extension Office to sign up for the project will be notified and reminded of the meeting. Anyone wishing to participate in the Vet Science Project can call or come by the Extension Office to be included in the project.

3 P A G E 3 Record books and County Elections It is time to begin preparing to complete a 4-H Record Book. Record book forms may be downloaded from the Texas 4-H website at 4-H members planning to submit a record book are reminded that the books must be turned in to the Extension Office no later than June 8, They will be sent to be judged on June 12th. Members should note that a record book must be submitted in order to apply for the Bronze, Silver or Gold Star awards. Please call or come by the Extension Office to receive a handout that will give you step by step directions for completing the 2018 record book. You may also set up an appointment to have one of the Extension Agents or staff review and offer suggestions for your book. Officer elections will be held at the May 21th meeting of the 4-H Council. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. and we will also begin making plans for the annual 4-H banquet at that time. The guidelines for Council officers say that a member must have represented their club on council for at least one year. Any qualified youth wishing to run for any or all Council offices will need to fill out an Officer Application and turn it in to the Extension Office by May 11th. Applications will be ed to individuals upon request or may be picked up from the Extension office. Offices will be voted on individually by secret ballot beginning with the Chairman. Members may only serve two (2) terms in any office. State 4-H Roundup State 4-H Roundup will be held June 11-14, 2018 at Texas A&M University in College Station. There are a number of Invitational contests open to 4-H youth in the 6th through 12th grades. The registration period for Roundup is May 1st through May 15th. Youth may enter only one (1) contest per day. Information on these Invitational contests is available at events/roundup. Invitational contests and workshops must be signed-up for during the May 1-15 registration period.

4 P A G E 4 Leadership Labs District 11 Leadership Lab Senior members District 11 4-H Leadership Lab will be held June 20-22, 2018 at McKinney Roughs Nature Park in Cedar Creek, Texas. The theme this year is Wild about D11! and Lab activities will be coordinated around this theme. The cost for lab is $200 for 4-H members and $165 for adult leaders. The 4-H County Council will refund a portion (up to $100 per person) when you return from Lab. All participants and chaperones must register on 4-H Connect between Monday, April 30 and Friday, June 1. Leadership Lab is restricted to youth ages 13 through 17 as of June 1, Graduated seniors will be allowed to attend. Chaperones must be enrolled as volunteers on 4-H Connect. When you register on 4-H Connect, please check that your Health Form and Waiver and Indemnification Agreement and Medical Treatment form is completed. You will also need to fill out the McKinney Roughs liability form. Dress for Leadership Lab is casual, but neat. Conventional shoes or sandals must be worn at all times. A Sunday outfit is needed for the banquet. D11 Junior Leadership Lab Junior and Intermediate members The 2018 D11 Jr. Leadership Lab is scheduled for Tuesday, July 10th. This event will be held at Matagorda Bay Nature Park, 6430 FM 2031, Matagorda, TX Registration will open on 4-H CONNECT on May 1 and remain open until June 22, The cost for Jr. Lab is $30 which includes lunch and a t-shirt. The fee for adults, parents, agents and D11 Council Officers wanting a t-shirt is $20 and for those not wanting a t-shirt is $5. The 2018 Jr. Lab workshops include Fishing, Kayaking, Walking through the Wetlands, Science on the Sphere Tour and Team Building. All 4-H members, grades 3rd through 8th, as of May 31, 2018 are invited to participate. All participants, including adults, must also complete the medical form and waiver and indemnification form on their 4-H Connect profile. Adults attending Jr. Lab must be enrolled as volunteers on 4-H Connect.

6 P A G E Colorado County Fair Information The 2018 Colorado County Fair has been set for Wednesday, September 5, 2018 through Sunday, September 9, Tag-ins for individuals planning to exhibit an animal in the 2018 Fair began in April. Exhibitors may order, tag-in, validate and show animals in one or two departments of the Junior Market Livestock and Poultry show, but may only sell one project. Each exhibitor will the permitted to tag-in two animals in a department. A $10.00 per animal tag-in fee will be collected at time of tag-in. Scramble heifers will have a $15 tag-in fee. At project tag-ins where there are more than one family member exhibiting, and multiple entries are made, all animals may be tagged in under the name of the family. In such cases, this will require the identification of each animal to a given exhibitor at the time of official weigh-in on September 5th. Market hogs, goats, lambs and rabbits will be validated at the Colorado County Fairgrounds. Livestock entries must be submitted to the Colorado County Extension Office between the dates of August 6 through August 17, This includes open show entries. Record books are mandatory for market animals and will be turned in to the division chairman at the time of weigh-in on September 5, Tag-in dates are as follows: June 9, 2018 Market hogs tag-in 7:00-9:00a.m.; Market Goats and Lambs tag-in 8:00-10:00 am June 15, 2018 Deadline to place order for broiler chicks. Chicks must be ordered through Colorado County Extension Office. August 4, 2018 Validate Rabbits, 7:00 10:00 am. Breeding rabbits may also be tattooed at this time. Market Hogs Exhibitors may show a gilt or barrow in this department. Hogs must weigh lbs. (5lb. scale tolerance) at official weigh-in. Lambs must be carrying temporary incisors (milk teeth) with no permanent incisors in view at show time. Lambs must be slick shorn from knee and hock up at time of check-in. It will be mandatory for exhibitors to participate in the showmanship classes. Contact Gerald Koehl at for more information Market Goats Goats must be wethered prior to tag-in or at least have a band in place. Female goats are eligible to be entered. Goats must be dehorned at tag-in and must weigh lbs. (3 lb. tolerance) at show time. For more information contact Brian Psencik at Broilers Exhibitors must purchase a minimum of 25 chicks and may purchase no more then 50 chicks. The cost for a box of 25 birds is $ Broiler chicks will be picked up at the County Ag Building in Columbus on Friday, July 27, Broilers must have bands intact at the Broiler show. Contact Lee Hasse at for more information. Fryer Rabbits Bunnies may be produced from does that the exhibitor owns or purchased through any other source. Exhibitor must purchase a minimum of five (5) bunnies. If exhibitor wishes to buy more than five they must order in increments of five. There will be a $20 validation fee per pen of bunnies. For more information contact Lucy Markwardt, chairman, at Pen of Three Heifers, including fourth heifer will be weighed at Colorado Valley Vet Service, 1391 Texas 71 Business, Columbus on Wednesday, August 29, 2018 from 5:00 to 6:00 pm. Exhibitor must designate the three head that will show at this official weigh-in. Heifers must come from the same lot no mixing of two different pens. A mandatory interview and written exam will be conducted on Saturday, September 1, 2018, at the Colorado County Ag Complex Fairgrounds at 1:00 pm. All entrants are required to participate in the interview and exam to be eligible to show in this division. Exhibitors will draw for interview times at the final weigh-in on August 29th. Colorado County Fair clean-up days have been designated as Saturday, September 1, 2018 beginning with a 8:00 a.m. roll call and continuing to clean-up is complete and exhibitor packets are handed out; and Sunday, September 9, 2018 at 8:00 a.m. and will continue to all areas are cleaned.
