1 M I C R O S O F T Colorado Co. 4-H Updates from your county extension office I N S I D E T H I S I S S U E : Photography, S.A.L.E., Projects & Contests Colorado County Fair News, Club Updates, D 11 & State Activities County Happenings Contact Us 2/3 4/5 6/7 M A R C H Easter Community Service & CDM The Colorado County 4-H Council will sponsor the annual Easter Community Service Project with the help of the 4-H Clubs in the county. We will provide the WCJC Senior Citizens program with Easter bags for their clientele. We will meet to assemble 100+ bags at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, March 20, 2017 prior to the Council and Leaders meetings. We need a variety of toiletry items and ask each club to donate 100 of one item to fill the bags. At the present time clubs have volunteered to bring the following items: 4-H Horse Club toothbrushes and toothpaste, Eagle Lake handkerchiefs, Frelsburg bar soap, Sheridan 4-H washcloths, Wild Clover razors, Garwood lotions and lip balm and Whispering Oaks straws. Other suggested items include tissue packs, shampoo, antibacterial wipes, and other toiletry or personal items. Please contact the Extension Office to let us know what item your club will provide. Items need to be brought to the Extension Office on or before March 20th. One team and two individuals participated at the S.A.L.E. Consumer Decision Making Contest on February 18, This contest is a competitive event that enables 4-H members to practice making decisions based on information about a situation and four available marketplace options. The Senior team of Amelia Stavinoha, Nicole Hoelscher and Laurece Silcox placed 12th with Amelia placing 7th high individual. There were 42 teams and 127 contestants. In the Intermediate division there were two individuals Malarie Mican placed 17th and Robert Stavinoha placed 33rd out of 121 contestants. Thanks to coaches Joan Trojacek and Patti Glaeser and all other parent/leaders who assisted.
2 P A G E Texas 4-H Photography Contests The 2017 Texas 4-H Photography Contest rules and guidelines have been released. The theme for this year is Reflections and includes photos shot off any natural or artificial reflective surface. Examples of this theme would be, but not limited to, photos from lakes, a window pane, a mirror, or a polished/waxed car. 4-H ers are encouraged to be creative when thinking about reflections in everyday life. Changes for 2017 include photos must be 8X10 in size with a quality resolution and all photos must be the original work of the 4- H member submitting the photograph. This contest is for 4-H members in the 9th 12th grades and the entry deadline for the county contest is April 3rd,. The state deadline is April 15, Rules and categories can be found online at Those that advance to State will upload their photos in 4-H Connect. Photos may be submitted only one tine and in one category. Following are the 15 categories for the 2017 contest: Animals Domestic; Animals Wildlife; Catch-All; Details & Macro; Digital Darkroom; Dominant Color; Elements of Design; Food; Marine/Aquatic; Nature & Landscape; Night Photography; People; Plant/Flora; Storyboard; and the 2017 Theme. When entering photos for judging they should be labeled as follows: category_colorado_last name_first name. The A&M Vet Diagnostic Lab is celebrating its 50th year by sponsoring a Coloring, Art and Photography contest for Kindergarten through 12th grade 4-H members. The coloring page and other contest guidelines are available at the Extension Office. Entries will be uploaded to 4-H Connect by the deadline of April 1, For more information please contact the Extension Office at or TVMDL at H ers Place at S.A.L.E. Six 4-H members competed at the San Antonio Livestock Show in February. Adalyn Rodgers, Amelia and Robert Stavinoha exhibited heifers in the Junior Beef Heifer show and the Simbrah Superbowl. In the SALE show Robert and his cow/calf pair were senior champions and Amelia placed 3rd and Adalyn 11th in their classes. Amelia was Grand Champion showman in the Superbowl show and Robert placed 6th and Adalyn 7th in their age divisions. In the heifer show Robert was Reserve Champion and Adalyn placed 10th in her class. Amelia and Robert also participated in the commercial steer show where they placed 10th & 11th in a field of 58 exhibitors. Brooke and Zane Wanjura and Amelia also participated in the Beef Skillathon. Brooke was 14th out of 21 Juniors and Amelia was 14th and Zane 53rd out of 72 contestants in the Senior division. Jakelyn Primrose and Brooke and Zane also participated in the Youth Rodeo. All of these 4-H members, along with Emily Hasse and Mackenzie Thames will be participating in either the Houston Livestock show and/or Rodeo Austin. GOOD LUCK to all of them.
3 P A G E 3 Projects & Contests County Roundup, which includes Educational Presentations, Public Speaking, SET poster contest and Share-the-Fun acts, and Consumer Decision Making, Fashion Show, Duds to Dazzle, Storyboarding and SET contests will be held Wednesday, March 6, The contests will be held at the County Ag Building and will begin at 5:30 p.m. The Fashion Show includes a construction and a buying division as well as the Duds to Dazzle and Storyboarding contests. The District 11 Spring Spectacular is a combination of all the above mentioned contests. It will be held April 7 & 8, 2017 at Victoria College Emerging Technology Complex. Contests being held those days include Roundup, Fashion Show, and Consumer Decision Making. Guidelines for all these events can be found at: Horse Validation process has begun. The validation period is March 1 through April 15, 2017 for $10.00 per horse and $20.00 per horse for validation between April 16 and May 1, Horses that were validated in 2016 must be re-validated and any new horses must be added. The validation process is completed through your family profile on 4-H Connect. Instructions for validating your horse(s) can be found at and click on the State Horse Show. You will need to bring or a copy of your Coggins test to the Extension Office by May 1, It is time to begin preparing to complete a 4-H Record Book. Record book forms may be downloaded from the Texas 4-H website at 4-H members planning to submit a record book are reminded that the books must be turned in to the Extension Office no later than June 12, They will be sent to be judged on June 13th. Members should note that a record book must be submitted in order to apply for the Bronze, Silver or Gold Star awards. Please call or come by the Extension Office to receive a handout that will give you step by step directions on completing the 2017 record book. You may also set up an appointment to have one of the Extension Agents or staff review and offer suggestions for your book. Officer elections will be held at the May 15th meeting of the 4-H Council. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. and we will also begin making plans for the annual 4-H banquet at that time. The guidelines for Council officers say that a member must have represented their club on council for at least one year. Any qualified youth wishing to run for any or all Council office will need to fill out an Officer Application and turn it in to the Extension Office by May 8th. Applications will be available at the March meeting or may be requested from the office. Offices will be voted on by secret ballot individually beginning with the Chairman. Members may only serve two (2) terms in any office.
4 P A G E 4 Colorado County Fair Happenings The 2017 Colorado County Fair has been set for Wednesday, Sesptember 6, 2017 through Saturday, September 9, Tag-ins for individuals planning to exhibit an animal in the 2017 Fair will begin in April. Exhibitors may order, tag-in, validate and show animals in one or two departments of the Junior Market Livestock and Poultry show, but may only sell one project. Each exhibitor will the permitted to tag-in two animals in a department. A $5.00 per animal tag-in fee will be collected at time of tag-in. At project tag-ins where there are more than one family member exhibiting, and multliple entries are made, all animals may be tagged in under the name of the family. In such cases, this will require the identification of each animal to a given exhibitor at the time of official weight-in on September 6th. Market steers, commercial heifers, pen of three and scramble heifers will te tagged in at Colorado Valley Veterinary Services, 1391 Hwy 71 Business, Columbus. Market hogs, goats, lambs and rabbits will be validated at the Colorado County Fairgrounds. Livestock entries must be submitted to the Colorado County Extension Office between the dates of August 7 through August 18, This includes open show entries. Record books are mandatory for market animals and will be turned in the the division chairman at the time of weigh-in on September 6, Tag-in dates are as follows: April 22, 2017 Market Steers, Scramble Heifers, Pen of Three Heifers and Commercial Heifers 8:00 10:00 a.m. June 2, 2017 Deadline to place order for broiler chicks. Chicks must be ordered through Colorado County Extension Office. June 10, 2017 Market hogs tag-in 7:00-9:00a.m.; Market Goats and Lambs tag-in 8:00-10:00 am August 5, 2017 Validate Rabbits, 7:00 10:00 am. Breeding rabbits can be tattooed at this time. Pen of Three Heifers, including fourth heifer will be weighed at Colorado Valley Vet Service, 1391 Texas 71 Business, Columbus on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 from 5:00 to 6:00 pm. Exhibitor must designate the three head that will show at this official weigh-in. Heifers must come from the same lot no mixing of two different pens. A mandatory interview and written exam will be conducted on Saturday, August 26, 2017, at the Colorado County Ag Complex Fairgrounds at 1:00 pm. All entrants are required to participate in the interview and exam to be eligible to show in this division. Colorado County Fair clean-up days have been designated as Saturday, August 26, 2017 beginning with a 8:00 am roll call and continuing to clean-up is complete and exhibitor packets are handed out; and Sunday, September 10, 2017 at 8:00 a.m. and will continue to all areas are cleaned. Brooke and Zane Wanjura participated in 4-H Day at the Capitol, a program hosted by the Texas 4-H Youth Development Program, on Wednesday, February 8th. They are members of Colorado County 4 -H Horse Club. These two 4-H members had the opportunity to sit in the House of Representatives gallery and observe the activities of the legislative session, witness the recognition of 4-H Day at the capitol by Legislators, and spend the afternoon in office visits with Representative Leighton Schubert and Senator Lois Kolkhorst. March 17 any 4-H members, especially Senior age members, interested in Range Grass ID and/or Ag Product ID contests are asked to contact the Extension Office by March 15th for Ag Product ID and March 17th for Range ID.
