The Food Challenge teams included the Sizzling Saints, Julie Ana Gobert, Briana Orange, Audrey Potter and Jaguar Rau; the Hot Tamales, Aaron and Aric Querner, Kason Brown, Ashlee Owers and Skylar Robinson; and the Whispering Oaks team of Samuel Geigley, Maddie Patterson and Chloe Raabe. Teams are given a set of ingredients and a clue about the dish. The team has 40 minutes to create a recipe, prepare the dish and complete a presentation to be given to the judges. The presentation includes listing the ingredients and the steps to make the dish. They must also know how the dish fits into MyPlate, what nutrients it provides, and the number of servings and cost of each. The presentation is given to a panel of judges who may also ask questions about the dish the team has prepared. The Sizzling Saints and the Hot Tamales advanced to District 11 competition. The contestants in the Food Show included two Juniors Chloe Raabe and Maddie Paterson, two Intermediates Abigail Hilley and Rayel Aikens, and one Senior Danielle Hilley. The Food Show includes three age groups with four categories in each group: Proteins, Grains, Fruits and Vegetables and Dairy. Participants must prepare their dish and present it to the judges. They have to answer questions about preparing their dish and how it fits into the MyPlate Guide. They are also expected to know how many servings of each of the five categories in MyPlate are needed daily and what nutrients their dish provides. All Food Show contestants advanced to the District Show. The District 11 Food Challenge/Food Show was held January 7, 2017 in La Grange. The Food Challenge teams both placed 2nd in their competitions The Hot Tamales in Main Dish and the Sizzling Saints in Grains. Rayel Aikens received a blue ribbon in Intermediate Dairy and Maddie Patterson received a blue ribbon in Junior Fruits & Vegetables at the District Show.

2 P A G E Texas 4-H Photography Contests The 2017 Texas 4-H Photography Contest rules and guidelines have been released. The theme for this year is Reflections and includes photos shot off any natural or artificial reflective surface. Examples of this theme would be, but not limited to, photos from lakes, a window pane, a mirror, or a polished/waxed car. 4-H ers are encouraged to be creative when thinking about reflections in everyday life. Changes for 2017 include photos must be 8X10 in size with a quality resolution and all photos must be the original work of the 4- H member submitting the photograph. This contest is for 4-H members in the 9th 12th grades and the entry deadline for the county contest is April 3rd,. The state deadline is April 15, Rules and categories can be found online at Those that advance to State will upload their photos in 4-H Connect. The District 11 guidelines (3rd through 8th graders) will be the same as the state rules and guidelines. You must participate int the county contest to advance to District. The deadline to submit entries for the county contest is February 24, Those 4-H ers that advance to the District contest will need to submit their entries on 4-H Connect by March 10, Photos may be submitted only one tine and in one category. Following are the 15 categories for the 2017 contest: Animals Domestic; Animals Wildlife; Catch-All; Details & Macro; Digital Darkroom; Dominant Color; Elements of Design; Food; Marine/Aquatic; Nature & Landscape; Night Photography; People; Plant/Flora; Storyboard; and the 2017 Theme. The A&M Vet Diagnostic Lab is celebrating its 50th year by sponsoring a Coloring, Art and Photography contest for Kindergarten through 12th grade 4-H members. The coloring page and other contest guidelines are available at the Extension Office. Entries will be uploaded to 4-H Connect by the deadline of April 1, For more information please contact the Extension Office at or TVMDL at Easter Community Service The Colorado County 4-H Council will sponsor the annual Easter Community Service Project with the help of the 4-H Clubs in the county. We will provide the Wharton County Junior College Senior Citizens program with Easter bags for their clientele. We will meet to assemble 100+ bags at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, March 20, 2017 prior to the Council and Leaders meetings. We need a variety of toiletry items and ask each club to donate 100 of one item to fill the bags. At the January 9th Council meeting clubs volunteered to bring the following items: 4-H Horse Club toothbrushes and toothpaste, Frelsburg bar soap, Sheridan 4-H o washcloths and Wild Clover razors. Other suggested items include tissue packs, lotion, shampoo, handkerchiefs, antibacterial wipes, and other toiletry or personal items. Please contact the Extension Office to let us know what item your club will provide. Items need to be brought to the Extension Office on or before March 20th.

3 P A G E 3 Projects & Contests The Livestock Judging and Plant ID Range Science projects are ongoing at this time. Mr. Janak is planning some on-site practices for both projects to prepare for participation in judging events in surrounding counties during this 4-H year. Anyone interested in either or both of these projects can still join in by contacting the Extension Office at The 2016 District 11 Archery match was held December 8 & 10, 2016 at the Straight Arrow Archery, 60 Storehouse Drive in Victoria, TX Six Colorado County youth participated in the District contest. Placing 1st were Justin Jurek in Advanced Intermediate Open Recurve and Bonnie Thrift in Intermediate Ladies Barebow. Jayden Trapp placed 4th and Kase Weishuhn placed 5th in Junior Open Barebow and Scott Korell placed 5th in Junior Open Recurve. Sean Korrell placed 6th in Intermediate Open Compound. Congratulations to these local archers. County Roundup, which includes Educational Presentations, Public Speaking, SET poster contest and Share-the-Fun acts, and Consumer Decision Making, Fashion Show, Duds to Dazzle, Storyboarding and SET contests will be held Wednesday, March 6, The contests will be held at the County Ag Building and will begin at 5:30 p.m. The deadline to register to participate is February 24, The Fashion Show includes a construction and a buying division as well as the Duds to Dazzle and Storyboarding contests. The District 11 Spring Spectacular is a combination of all the above mentioned contests. It will be held April 7 & 8, 2017 at Northside Baptist Church in Victoria. Contests being held that day include Roundup, Fashion Show, and Consumer Decision Making. Guidelines for all these events can be found at: The Columbus Area Shooting Sports Club Rifle project has begun. A sign up and safety meeting was held on Thursday, January 12th at the Colorado County Fairgrounds H.E. Building beginning at 6:45 p.m. Participants will shoot each week under the supervision and instruction of certified rifle coaches serving as volunteer 4-H leaders. Fairgrounds beginning on January 15, Archery participants please take notice that the Archery Postal League Tournament begins January 10th at 6 45 at the fairgrounds H.E. Building. 4 P A G E 4 D 11 & State Happenings District 11 Community Service County 4-H Clubs are encouraged to support your First Responders, Fire Department, Police, Emergency Medical Services by making and giving care packages to the emergency response teams that serve Colorado County. The District 11 4-H Council is challenging you to create care packages, deliver goods, or do random acts of kindness for First Responders in our county, district and state. This community service project will run from November 2016 through Texas 4-H Roundup in June Items for care packages include, but are not limited to: AA and AAA batteries, quick drying medium sized towels, energy bars, heavy work gloves (size Large), head lamps, safety glasses, all-weather spiral notebooks, pens, Paracard Survival bracelets, lip balm, moist towelettes, deodorant, small plush toys, hand and foot warmers, a note of appreciation. Some ideas for implementing this project include bake sales, pancake breakfasts, gathering supplies at meetings and/or school, post flyers about gathering care package items, set out donation areas at school or local businesses and share your project on social media. Clubs or individuals who participate in this project need to report to and also the Extension Office. Firemen, Policemen, Paramedics, and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) are there to help during the most trying times in anyone s life. It is difficult physically, mentally, and especially emotionally. It is for these reasons 4-H wants to show support for these people by providing needed care packages for first responders throughout the state of Texas. State Roundup T-Shirt Design Contest The theme for the 2017 Texas 4-H State Roundup is Dream On and 4-H members are encouraged to submit a design for this years t-shirt. Design ideas must be your original work and include the words Texas 4-H Roundup the year 2017 and be related to the theme. Images may be hand drawn or computer generated. Electronic images must be in high resolution image formatting and hand drawn images can be scanned and submitted (300 dpi). If selected images may be modified slightly for printing purposes. Participation is open to any Texas 4-H member as verified through 4-H Connect enrollment. All submissions become the property of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Texas 4-H Youth Development Program. 4-H members release all rights to submission of logo. Designs are to be submitted through FormSite at tshirtdesign/index.html. The deadline to submit entries is February 28, The winning design will receive credit as the designer with thrie name and county noted on the t- shirt as well as a $150 gift card. 5 P A G E 5 Clothing & Textiles Project Any 4-H member wanting to construct or buy a garment for the Fashion Show or to participate in the Duds to Dazzle or Storyboarding contest are reminded that the deadline to enter the County Contest is February 24, The contests are scheduled for Monday, March 6, 2017 beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the County Agricultural Building.
