Your time, effort and leadership has proven to be invaluable. Our continued success in the 4-H Program is due in such an essential part to all of the contributions you have made. Congratulations to the ALONZO Family - Home School Club Mrs. Tami Alonzo - Salute to Excellence Award Mrs. Alonzo was recognized during the Texas 4-H Roundup on Wednesday, June 10 th at the Memorial Student Center on the Campus of Texas A&M, and also during Assembly that night at Reed Arena. Gabriel Alonzo - Richard Wallrath Educational Scholarship Gabe was awarded a Richard Wallrath Educational Scholarship in the amount of $10,000 on Wednesday, June 10 th, at the AgriLife Center, Texas A&M University Scholarship Assembly, Reed Arena

3 serving on pump it up committee helping in the Press Room participating in the 4K race videotaping Share-the-Fun Contests presenting awards STATE ROUNDUP Gabriel Alonzo, as a State Council member, had many key roles at the State Roundup... working the Community Service booth collecting funds for Alec s Lemonade Stand to help kids with cancer assisted stage hands on night assemblies helping with games at the fair He competed in the Fashion Storyboard Contest-Wearables category. He was featured in a Patriotic Night skit where he played Abe Lincoln. He won a dance contest voted on by the audience. State Photography Contest Gabe competed in 7 different categories, and here are his results: 5 Blue Ribbons - Animals-Domestic, Animals-Wildlife, People, Nature/Landscape, and Night Photography 2 Red Ribbons - Elements of Design and Details & Macro 4-H AWARDS BANQUET Come celebrate all your hard work and achievements at the 4-H Awards Banquet Date: Tuesday, August 25, 2015 Place: Trinity Episcopal Church All Saints Hall N. All are Welcome For more information or to obtain Registration Packets, contact the Extension office at HOME SCHOOL CLUB NEWS It has been a couple of busy months for our club. At our May meeting, each of our club members did a 5 minute presentation/demonstration on one of their 4-H projects, fulfilling their leadership requirement. We saw great presentations including one on Legos by Jacob Lamb, crocheting by Savannah Peteet, using a loom to make headbands, etc. by Julia Lamb, resizing a t-shirt by Tayler Havard, how to draw a landscape by Joseph Lamb, and juggling tricks by Gabriel Alonzo. We also honored Gabe on his recent high school graduation. We had 18 people to on our field trip to Caldwell Zoo at the end of May, and we saw a great program on Texas endangered species. As his final 4-H Council duty, Gabe attended District Leadership Lab in McKinney June and helped to lead that camp as they elected new District 5 and State Council members for the next year. On July 4 th, Gabe will travel to Rusk to perform a juggling/gymnastics routine for a District 5 4 th of July celebration. Our club wishes Gabe and Ms. Tami well as they graduate from 4-H this year after 12 years of being a part of our club. We are very excited to welcome Ms. Lynette Pierce as our new Club Manager and look forward to all the new ideas and plans she will bring. Sincerely, Tami Alonzo

5 It s Enrollment Time for the H Year!!! As you know, in order to enroll in the 4-H program, it is mandatory to create/ reactivate your profile on 4-H Connect. Beginning August 15, 2015 everyone can reactivate their 4-H membership profile or create a new membership profile for the new 4-H year on 4-H Connect. To enroll or re-enroll on 4-H Connect, please go to Or you can go on the Harrison County website and click on 4-H Connect REMINDER... To maintain the level of programming and opportunities in the Texas 4-H and Youth Development Program, an annual participant fee is necessary for each 4-H member. *NOTE: This participant fee of $20.00, if enrolled from August 15 th to October 31 st, will be reduced by $10.00 again this year, making the fee $10.00 per 4-H er this year; This reduction is due to the generosity of the Harrison County Master Gardener s Association who are offering this to all 4-H ers who enroll before October 31 st. Anyone enrolling after October 31 st, the fee will be $25.00 per 4-H er. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call the Extension Office. PECAN SALE The annual Brian McGaughy Memorial Scholarship Fund Pecan Sale Pecan sales will begin mid-august this year to allow more time to get orders. So, practice your sales pitch and let s make this a record year for sales. The more sales, the more $1,000 scholarships can be awarded to our Harrison County Seniors. Remember, there are CASH AWARDS going to the TOP THREE SELLERS. When an order deadline date and cost per pound bag of pecans are received, you will receive an updated with all the information. Order forms and a copy of the flyer will be attached to the for you convenience. Order forms can also be obtained from the Extension office or from your club manager, and will also be available on our website.

6 NEW 4-H CANOPy The Harrison County 4-H Adult Leaders Association recently purchased a 10'x10' canopy to be used for marketing 4-H at festivals and other events. The canopy has 3 sides, 8-40 lb. weight bags, and a sign that says Harrison County 4-H that slides into a sleeve. Please contact Ms. Louraiseal at the Extension office if your club plans to have a 4-H booth at an upcoming festival or other event. One Day 4-H - October 10 th, 2015 What is one day in the life of a person? For some it can be a difference of life of having something to eat, it could be having the blood for a car wreck or transfusion, or it could be just having someone to talk to. One day does make a difference to thousands in our state! On Saturday, October 10, 2015 the Texas 4-H and Youth Development Program will host its 7 th annual day of community service, one day 4-H Before your 4-H club wraps up for the Summer form a committee and gather ideas for how you can make a difference on October 10th! FIRE ANT FESTIVAL On October 10 th, 2015, the annual Fire Ant Festival will be held in down-town Marshall. There ll be lots of food, fun and entertainment for all. If your club is interested in having a booth at the festival, please contact Ms. Louraiseal as soon as possible.

8 Smoothie Pops What You Need: Utensils: Knife & cutting board Blender 4 oz. Paper cups Foil Craft Sticks (wooden popsicle sticks) Ingredients: 8 ounces non-fat lemon yogurt 8 ounces crushed pineapple, in juice, undrained 1 large banana, sliced ½ pint (8 ounces) strawberries 1 cup ice What to do: 1. Wash your hands and clean your cooking area. 2. Clean the tops of canned food items before opening them. 3. Wash the fruit. 4. Peel and slide the banana and remove strawberry stems. 5. Combine all ingredients except ice into the blender and blend until smooth. 6. Add ice and pulse until smooth. 7. Fill the paper cups with the smoothie. 8. Cover the top of each paper cup with foil. 9. Place a craft stick through the foil into the center of paper cup. 10. Place the filled cups in the freezer and chill for about 3-4 hours.
