1 January 2013 Hood County 4-H Newsletter Question of the Month: What is the date for the County 4-H Roundup? Last month s question: How many toes does a rabbit have? Congratulation to Emily Brite for the correct answer! A rabbit has a total of 18 toes. 4-H Club Meetings Lipan 4-H - January 4 th, at 6:30 pm, at the Community Center Young Riders - January 7 th, at 7:00 pm, at Annex 1, Come join the Hood County Young Riders on Monday, January 7th at 7:00 pm at Annex I to hear Stormy Mullins from the Mustang Heritage Foundation. He will be talking about the new Mustang Millions event and how youth can get involved with the Foundation. We'll also have refreshments and games to enjoy. We hope to see you there!! Tolar 4-H - January 8 th,at 6:30 pm, at the Tolar Fire Hall Shooting Sports meets every Tuesday at 6:00 pm, with the Senior and Intermediate age group meeting on the 1 st & 3 rd Tuesdays and the Junior age group and all new members will meet on the 2 nd and 4 th Tuesdays. The meetings are held at the Reunion Fairgrounds with regular business meeting on the 2 nd Tuesday of each month and both groups will need to attend the regular business meeting. Lake Granbury Community 4-H - January 7 th, at 7:00 pm, at the Reunion Fairgrounds Cornerstone 4-H - the Cornerstone 4-H Club will not meet this month Kids, Dogs & More Project Group January 24 th, at 6:30 pm at Reunion Fairgrounds

I will be glad to help. ~ Marty 3 Meeting Rule Don t forget! You must attend 3-4-H club business meetings to be eligible to participate in the Hood County Jr. Livestock Show & Family Living Division. Be sure and sign in at each business meeting you attend. County Stock Show & Family Living Rules can be found at or the Hood County AgriLife website under Publications Livestock Raisers Association The HCLRA meets on the 3 rd Thursday of every month at 7:30 pm at the fairgrounds. We need more 4-H families to get involved with this group. They make the rules for the county show, upkeep the facilities and provide us a place and opportunity to show our projects. Next meeting is January 17, Steak Lunch at the County Show Please be sure to turn in your tickets and money for the steak dinner to the Extension Office no later than January 4, We are trying to get an accurate meal count so we buy the right amount of food. 4-H Scales & Clippers The 4-H program has scales to weigh your animals and clippers to clip them, also. If you would like to use these items, you may check them out from the office. We ask that you return them in 3 days so the next person can use them. Clip Day for County Show & Fairgrounds Work Day If you need help clipping your animals for the county show, we will have a clip day on Saturday, January 5 th at the fairgrounds. We will get started at 1:30 pm. Please call the office and let us know how many animals you will be bringing by Wednesday, January 2 nd. This will help us make sure we have enough clippers. There is also a work day that morning that counts for hours towards the HCLRA scholarship. County Stock Show Assignments All clubs are responsible for time in the concession stand and for helping to keep the animal barn cleaned up and tidy. Check with your Club Manager or the extension office to find out when your shift is for the concession stand.

3 County Stock Show & Family Living Eligibility Forms Eligibility forms for the county show were mailed the week of December 10, It is your responsibility to take these forms to your school get them signed and return them to the Extension Office prior to the County Stock Show starting on January 10, If you do not receive your form in the mail it is also your responsibility to contact the office. Pancake Breakfast The county show is just around the corner. Our annual pancake breakfast fundraiser will take place on Friday, January 11, We need 4-H ers, parents and volunteers to call or Brianne and sign up to work. We have an early shift & late shift. Be sure to invite your friends and family to come eat. Tickets are $5 for adults, $2 for kids 8 & under! The more tickets sold, the more opportunities for our 4-H members! Our Twitter handle Texas 4-H Opportunities Scholarship If you are a senior wanting to apply for one of the big 4-H Scholarships or maybe you are a Freshman or Junior thinking about applying in the near future, you need to let Marty know ASAP. That way, as the information is ready he can let you know. Applications will be due in late January. If you are a senior applying you need to get your FAFSA form done ASAP. County Roundup This year s County 4-H Roundup will be held on Tuesday, March 26, Be thinking about topics for Educational Presentations and Share-The-Fun contests. More information will be coming after the County Stock Show. Consumer Decision Making Project I am looking for smart, savvy kiddos to form Consumer Decision Making teams!! This is a great project because it teaches real world skills that as older teens, college students, and adults we use every single day. This project is designed to teach kids to observe, compare and make consumer based decisions based on facts. For the contest, teams of 3-4 members individually use their consumer knowledge to rank similarly based products to fit a given scenario. Kids learn to organize their thoughts and to defend their decisions in oral reasons. If you are interested, please contact me as soon as possible. The district contest is March 2nd! ~ Brianne P.S. Mom & Dad: There is BIG SCHOLARSHIP money to be won as senior 4-H ers in this contest at several major stock shows. Juniors, Intermediates, or Seniors, it s never too late to get started in this project to get better for the future. Quote of the Month: Champions do not become champions when they win the event, but in the hours, weeks, months and years they spend preparing for it. 4 Congratulations! On Monday, December 3, 17 youth representing four teams from Hood County participated in the District 8 4-H Food Challenge competition in Belton. All four Hood County teams received an award at the competition, which is an impressive feat. 36 total Junior/Intermediate teams and 27 total Senior teams competed, with the top five teams placing in four different categories, Main Dish, Fruits & Vegetables, Breads & Grains, and Nutritious Snacks. A Spirit Award was also handed out to one Junior/Intermediate team and one Senior team in each of the four categories. The Spirit award is given to the team that exemplifies team work, 4-H spirit, has fun, and looks great too! The Tenderloins will represent Hood County and District 8 at State 4-H Round-Up in College Station in June The Food Challenge requires teams to create a dish using only the ingredients provided, a clue, and no instructions, and then to present that dish to a panel of judges with information on how they created the dish, what food safety practices they followed, the nutrition content of their dish & how it helps them meet their MyPlate requirements, and for the senior teams, a cost analysis of the dish. 5 Spring Contests Before we know it, the County Stock Show will have come and gone. The first round of Spring contests has district competitions in March, which means county project meetings and competitions will be held in January & February. The second round of contests fill up the month of April, bleeding over into May. Below are some of the projects/contests offered in the Spring. You can find out more about these projects on the District 8 4-H website: If any of these interest you as a 4-H er or adult volunteer, please contact Marty or Brianne. We are happy to assist in any projects a 4-H er wants to do, but it takes adult leaders & volunteers to help us make it happen. Nutrition Quiz Bowl District Contest Date: March 2 The Quiz Bowl involves teams of three or four members. Two teams compete against each other at one time, answering questions related to nutrition, food safety, dietary guidelines, food preparation, food preservation, MyPlate, health, and consumer information with the use of an electronic buzzer system. Consumer Decision Making District Contest Date: March 2 Consumer Decision Making is a judging contest designed to teach kids to observe, compare and make consumer based decisions based on facts. Teams of 3-4 members individually use their consumer knowledge to rank similarly based products to fit a given scenario. Kids learn to organize their thoughts and to defend their decisions in oral reasons. Clothing & Textiles Project Age Divisions: Junior, Intermediate & Senior District Contest Date: April 12* (tent.) The clothing and textiles project allows youth the opportunity to make a style of their own, be creative in sewing and designing, use basis sewing skills, develop good consumer skills when making and purchasing clothes, and serve the community by using skills learned in this project. This is an individual competition. Livestock Judging District Contest Date: April 20 Livestock judging is the process of evaluating, selecting, placing, and learning the various livestock species beef cattle, sheep, and swine. Judging is the foundation of any 4-H livestock project. Horse Judging District Contest Date: April 6 Teams of three or four members individually evaluate multiple classes of 4 horses for composition and performance. Teams all compete at once, judging the same sets of classes. Both age groups give oral reasons on a specified number of predetermined classes. Entomology District Contest Date: April 6 The entomology project familiarizes youth with the insect world by studying, collecting and identifying various insects. Individuals or teams of 3-4 members individually identify insect specimens by scientific name. Range & Plant ID District Contest Date: April 12 The range science project develops knowledge and skill in practical range and ranch management. The Plant ID contest familiarizes 4-H ers with native pasture plants & grasses. Teams of 3-4 compete individually judge scenarios and identify plant specimens. Leaders 4 Life (Parli. Pro) Age Divisions: Junior, Intermediate & Senior District Contest Date: May 2 The Leaders 4 Life Program provides resources to equip clubs in conducting high quality leadership training, parliamentary procedure training, and service learning activities.

6 Christmas Tree Recycling We will once again recycle Christmas trees as a community service project. This year s event will take place on January 5, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. until noon at Arrow Feed on Hwy We need 4- H ers to come out and unload trees and bag mulch for a couple of hours. Volunteer Screening If you are a parent or volunteer that is taking an active role in a 4-H club or some other project (including driving kids to 4-H events) please be sure you have enrolled in 4-H Connect and that you have completed the volunteer screening. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call. Child Protection Training After the passing of Senate Bill 1414 is now mandated that any 4-H volunteers chaperoning 4-H youth at overnight events such as camps, judging trips, etc and/or helping with multiday camps complete a Child Protection Training. This training is located on 4-H Connect. When you log into your personal profile you will see a tab for trainings. If you click on tab for trainings you will open up the training session. If you have any questions let us know. We encourage all or our volunteers to complete the Child Protection Training. Dog Validation Just a reminder if you plan to show your dog at the 2013 Texas 4-H Dog Show you will have to complete validation paperwork by January 10, If you have any questions, contact the office. 7 Oatmeal Raisin Muffins NUTRITION FACTS INGREDIENTS UTENSILS Serving Size: 1 muffin Servings per recipe: 12 1¼ cup all-purpose flour 1 cup uncooked oatmeal 2 teaspoons baking powder ½ teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 cup skim milk ⅓ cup brown sugar, packed 1 egg ¼ cup vegetable oil ⅓ cup apple sauce 1¼ cup raisins, unpacked Measuring cups and spoons Large mixing bowl Medium mixing bowl Muffin tin (12 muffins) Mixing spoon Amount per serving Calories 200 Calories from fat 50 % Daily Value* Total Fat 6g 9% Saturated Fat 0.5g 3% Trans Fat 0g Cholesterol 15mg 5% Sodium 210mg 9% Total Carbohydrate 35g 12% Dietary Fiber 2g 8% Sugars 20g Protein 4g WHAT TO DO: 1. Wash hands and cooking area. 2. Preheat oven to 350 F. 3. Mix flour, oatmeal, baking powder, baking soda, salt and cinnamon in a large bowl. 4. In medium mixing bowl, combine milk, sugar, egg, oil, applesauce and raisins 5. Stir the two mixtures together in the large mixing bowl until ingredients are moist. Do not over stir or muffins will be flat. 6. Spoon the mixture into a greased muffin tin until it is ⅔ full. 7. Bake the muffins at 350 F for 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into a muffin comes out clean. MyPlate: 2 ounces Grains ¼ cup Fruit Note from Brianne This is a great beginner recipe. It s pretty simple and very yummy! (Shhh. It s healthy too! But that can be our little secret!) You could also vary this recipe by using craisins or other dried fruit instead of raisins. If you re really adventurous, you could also experiment with other spices like nutmeg.
