Recordbook Clinic There will be a Record Book Clinic on Thursday, May 9th at 6:00pm. The clinic will be held in the Ag Auditorium. If this is your first year to complete a Record Book,you definitely do not want to miss this clinic! Even if you are experienced with Record Books and want to brush up on your skills or get some tips on how to improve the quality of your Record Book, this will be a very informative clinic. Record Books will be due to the County Extension Office on or before Friday, June 21st. Below is the link to help gather basic information on constructing a Record Book: Books Raffle Ticket Sales Calhoun County 4-H, Making the Best Better, One 4-H Member at a Time. Just a reminder that we are asking each family to sell $20.00 worth of Raffle Tickets. The money from the ticket sales go to fund scholarships, contest entries, project resources, and much more. Tickets will be due back to the Extension Office in July. Extension Programs serve people of all ages regardless of socioeconomic level, race, color, sex, religion, disability, or national origin. The Texas A&M University System, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the County Commissioners Courts of Texas Cooperating.

2 Page 2 Turkey Pickup Turkeys will be available for pickup from the Extension Office on Wednesday, May 8th. They should be a v a i l a b l e f o r p i c k - u p a t approximately 4:00pm. Just a reminder, Turkeys will be wing banded. Feeders, start talking to the feed stores to get feed ordered for the Turkeys before they get here. A&M Sheep & Goat Camp Lamb Camp - 7/19-7/21 Goat Camp - 7/26-7/28 Cost - $ Participants and parents must register online. It is a great camp with plenty of hands-on instruction. For more information and to register online visit the following URL demics/sheep-goats/sheepcenter/youth-camps/ Swine Clinic 1 The first swine clinic will take place at 2:00pm on Saturday, May 4th at the Fairgrounds. The clinician will be Josh Elkins of Hearne, TX. Mr. Elkins is owner of JKL Show Hogs. Please remember that all swine exhibitors must attend one of the two swine clinics offered, in order to be eligible to show at the Calhoun County Fair. Poultry Clinic There will be a Poultry Clinic on Monday, May 20th at 6:00pm at the Ag Auditorium. Mr. Brent Batchelor - Matagorda Co. CEA/AG will be discussing the poultry project and will cover the following: Facilities Brooding Feeding Selection Culling Show Preparation It is a very informational clinic and would definitely help first time families, as well as seasoned Poultry show veterans.

3 Page 2 Broiler and Roaster Orders Orders for Roasters and Broilers are due on or before June 20th. When filling out exhibitor card, please be sure to have child s social security number. Please keep in mind there is a $10.00 entry fee. Also as a reminder, the birds will be wing-banded this year. Fair Rulebooks Online 2013 Calhoun County Fair Rulebooks are available online at calhoun.agrilife.org please make notes of dates upcoming with your project area. Also available online are the 2013 Commercial Heifer Show and Sale Rules. Sheep, Goat, Swine Tag-In Date: June 25th Time: 6:00pm-7:00pm Where: Calhoun County Fairgrounds Make sure to bring all of your breeding and market sheep, goats, and swine to the tag in on June 25th. State Fair of Texas Sheep and Goat Validation will also occur at the same time. Commercial Heifer Tag-In Date: June 22nd Time: 8:00am-10:00am Where: Bayfront Animal Hospital Entry: $50/pen All heifers must be Brucellosis Vaccinated before tag-in. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Extension Office.

4 Page 4 Council and PALA Meeting The County 4-H Council and Parent Adult Leaders Association will meet on Monday, May 28th at 6:00pm at the Extension Office. Trap and Skeet The Trap and Skeet Group will be meeting to practice on May 18th at 1:00pm. The practice is at the Skeet Range behind the Fairgrounds. If you have any questions or would like some information, contact CEA Ryan Damborsky at the Extension Office. Archery Archery practice will be held on the following dates: Sunday, May 3:00pm All practices are held in the Show Barn. Participants do not have to own their own equipment to participate. For more information, contact Ryan Damborsky at the Extension Office. Clothing and Textiles The Clothing and Textiles group will meet on May 13th at 6:00pm in the Bauer Exhibit Building. For more information on this meeting, contact project area leader, Heather Conde.

5 Page 3 Star Awards Application In order to be considered for Gold Star, Silver Star, Bronze Star, or the I Dare You Award, you must complete the Awards application and turn in the application with your record book on June 21, All applicants must undergo an interview in order to be considered. Award applications will be available on the Extension Website at calhoun.agrilife.org Calhoun County 4-H Summer Project Camps Food and Nutrition Camp - June 24-27th from 10am-2pm This camp will cover basic kitchen skills along with food show and food challenge. Lunch will be provided for the campers. The cost is $20 and the deadline to register is June 17th. Clothing and Textiles Camp - July 8-11th from 10am-2pm This camp will give the young people the opportunity to learn sewing machine basics, how to sew, and project construction. Lunch will be provided for the campers. Cost is $20 and the deadline to register is July 1st. Challenger League Buddies Needed The Challenger League is needing volunteers to serve as Buddies for the last Challenger League game of the year. The game takes place on Saturday, May 18th, at the Calhoun County Softball field. Please be there at or before 9:45am. It is a great community service, and loads of fun. Texas 4-H Roundup Registration Deadline Approaching For those that are attending the Texas 4-H Roundup in College Station in June, please be aware that you must be registered on 4HConnect by May 10th.

7 Page 7 District 11 Leadership Lab Date: June Place: State 4-H Center in Brownwood, TX Registration Deadline: May 24th This program is designed for 4-Hers 8th grade and older. Council officers are highly encouraged to attend the Leadership Lab. Council pays registration costs and Charter Buses are being scheduled to transport to Brownwood. Texas 4-H Shooting Sports State Games Date: July Place: National Shooting Complex, San Antonio, TX Registration Deadline: May 1st - June 16th Community Service Efforts A big Thank You goes out to all of the 4-Hers that volunteered as buddies for the Challenger League Game in April. It was a great experience and loads of fun. Also a big Thank You goes out to all of those families that donated goods to go to those families affected by the tragedy in West, TX. In a little over 24 hours, we received many cases of water, clothing, food, blankets and toiletries. Below is a picture of merely half of what was donated.
