District Photography Contest Lavaca County 4-H members recently submitted photos in the District 11 4-H Photography Contest. 4-Hers who placed 1 st at the county level earned the opportunity to compete at the district level. 2 P AGE 2 Consumer Decision Making Record Books L AVACA 4-H NEWSLETTER Lavaca County 4-H hosted the District 11 Consumer Decision Making Contest on April 11 at the Lillie Johnson Youth Center in Hallettsville. A junior level team consisting of Trey Ridgeway, Luke Bludau, Kendall Etzler, and Abby Hermes and an intermediate team consisting of Sarah Bludau, Hannah Bludau, Kingsley Kahanek, and Hailey Steffek both took home second place honors. Other Lavaca County teams competing were intermediates Abigail Bludau, Allison Etzler, Bret Etzler, and Trinity Kusak and seniors Victoria Kusak and Camille Grahmann. The top ten individuals were also recognized. Individual honors included Kingsley Kahanek - intermediate 5 th place, Sarah Bludau - intermediate 6 th place, Luke Bludau - junior 6 th place and Trey Ridgeway junior 8 th place. Completed 4-H record books are due in the County Extension Office by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, June 10. Copies of the Texas 4-H Report Form and complete instructions are available at the County Extension Office or on the 4-H website. This year, 4-Hers who complete record books will be eligible to receive a free movie pass. Remember the record book forms changed last year. Also, please remember that completing a record book is required to run for office in most clubs, as well as, county council. It is also required to apply for the county level awards and scholarship. 4-H Awards Applications for the Bronze Star, Silver Star, Gold Star and I Dare You Awards are available at the Extension Office. These must be turned in with your completed 4-H Record Book by June 10. Applicants must be available for an interview on June 27, must attend the Awards Banquet, and have worked at the 4-H BBQ in the last three years. A complete set of requirements can be found on the application. 4-H Scholarship Applications are available at the Extension Office for the Lavaca County 4-H Scholarship. Applications must be turned in by June 10 with your completed record book. 4-H Award/Scholarship Interviews Interviews for all of the above awards and scholarship will be conducted on June 27. A schedule will be sent after applications have been turned in. Those who cannot be there on June 27 will have an opportunity to video tape their interview before the interview date. Please contact the Extension Office to make video taping arrangements prior to June 27. HJLS/Major Show Steer Validation June 15 4-H members who plan to exhibit a steer at the Hallettsville Junior Livestock Show or any of the major livestock shows must have their projects validated on Saturday, June 15 from 8:00 a.m. 10:00. Validation will be conducted at the Hallettsville ISD Ag Shop. The exhibitor and a parent must be present for major show validations. Exhibitors with unavoidable conflicts must contact the Extension Office prior to the 15th. HJLS Commercial Heifer Validation June 15 4-H members planning to participate in the Hallettsville Jr. Livestock Show Commercial Heifer Program must have their animals validated on Saturday, June 15 from 8:00 a.m. 10:00 at Hallettsville Livestock Commission Company. Exhibitors with unavoidable conflicts must contact the Extension Office prior to the 15th. HJLS Breeding Heifer Validation Those planning to exhibit a breeding heifer at the Hallettsville Jr. Livestock Show may have their projects validated at any of the HJLS validations including steer, commercial heifer, swine and lamb. The steer and commercial heifer validations will be taking place on June 15. Please refer to the above articles for details on these validations.

3 P AGE 3 State Shooting Sports There is limited information available about the State Shooting Sports Games at this time. The following is what we currently know: 2013 State Games Handbook and detailed information document should be posted soon. July 15-20, Archery & Shotgun Events National Shooting Complex, San Antonio, TX Week of July 22-27, 2013 (specific days TBD) Hunting & Wildlife, Muzzleloading, Pistol, and Rifle Events Callahan County 4-H Range Registration will be completed by the INDIVIDUAL (not the coach as in previous years). REGISTRATION TO OPEN ON 4-H CONNECT SOON/REGISTRATION DEADLINE JUNE 16 REGISTRATION COST: $75/PARTICIPANT Late Registration: June 17-23, $100/Participant **NO registrations will be taken after late registration has closed. NO on-site registrations will be taken. Major Show Turkey Orders 4-Hers planning to show turkeys at the major livestock shows must place orders at the Extension Office by June 28. Driscoll Children s Hospital Auction Lavaca County 4-H will once again be involved in conducting a benefit auction for Driscoll Children s Hospital in Corpus Christi. This auction, as in the past, will take place at the Hallettsville Livestock Commission Company on Tuesday, June 25. This is an opportunity for 4-Hers to join with area ranchers and agribusinesses to support the hospital. The role of Lavaca County 4-Hers will be to donate items to be sold at the auction and/or help on the day of the sale. In the past items have included baked goods, arts and crafts, plants, animal feed, various livestock health products, etc. Items can be dropped off at the Extension Office from now until 9:30 a.m. on June 25th. Items may be delivered directly to the auction barn beginning at 10:00 a.m. on the 25th. The auction will take place after the sale of the cows which is approximately 12:00 noon. Please call the Extension Office to let us know what you plan to donate and/or if you plan to help at the auction by June 21. It is very important that we know how many items we can expect when planning this event. We need everyone s participation to ensure that the auction is a success. Leadership Lab Donation Suggestion 4-H members are encouraged to donate items that relate to their projects. This is a great way to get project related community service which is often hard to achieve. The District 11 4-H Leadership Lab will be held June in Brownwood. This event is open to 4-Hers ages as of June 1, Registration deadline for 4-Hers and chaperones on 4-HConnect is May 29. The cost for participants is $165 (1/2 will be reimbursed by County Council) and $135 for chaperones (all will be reimbursed by County Council). Parents of the participants will be responsible for transportation and chaperoning. Leadership Lab is a leadership training event that is designed to equip participants with programs that can be replicated in the county. Election of District 4-H Officers also takes place at this event. More information on this event is available at the Extension Office. Stripes Mobile Campaign Lavaca County 4-H is once again going to be the recipient of funds from the Stripes 4-H Mobile Campaign. For 2012, we will receive $1, Please make sure you thank our local Stripes store for participating.

4 MAY, 2013 Junior Leadership Lab District 11 Junior Leadership Lab will be held on July 9, 2013 in Rockport. This is a leadership training experience for 4-Hers ages 9 through 13 as of May 31, Each participant must register online using 4-HConnect. Registration deadline is June 26. The cost is $30 per participant. Please call the Extension Office for more infor- 4-H Awards Banquet The 2013 Lavaca County 4-H Awards Banquet, hosted by the Hallettsville Clubs, will be held on August 5 beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the Youth Center in Hallettsville. All 4-H members and their families are invited to attend. Awards will be given to each member who turned in a record book and to junior and teen leaders. The presentation of the Bronze, Silver and Gold Star Awards, the I Dare You Award and the County 4-H Scholarship will also be made. Each family must call the Extension Office by July 26 with the number planning to attend. Each 4-H club must provide 2 desserts. Livestock Camps There are several livestock camps available over the summer. You may visit the TAMU Animal Science website at for details. Market Lamb & Goat Training A training on market lamb and goats for adult volunteers will be held on May 29, This is a regional training which will be held at Haws Club Lambs in Beeville, Texas. This training is designed to educate volunteers on selection, facilities, classification, management and nutrition of market lambs and goats. For more information, contact the Extension Office.
