Michelle Mihalek County Extension Agent 4-H & Youth Development End of year report forms were mailed out in April to club managers and assistant managers. These were due back to the 4-H Office by May 24th. If you have not turned yours in yet, please do so as soon as possible. There will be a club manager meeting on Thursday, July 26th at 6:30pm at the County Extension Office. Annual planning and enrollment procedures will be discussed. If you have anything you would like to add to the agenda, please let us know. Contact the 4-H Office to R.S.V.P. for this meeting. County Council Corner County Council meetings are held the 4th Monday of the month September - May, unless otherwise noted. Everybody is welcome and club delegates are strongly encouraged to attend these meetings. The next County Council meeting will be held at Leadership Team Training on Saturday, August 18th. Leadership Team Training is an annual training that is essential for club officers, their parents, managers, assistant managers and project leaders, but everybody is welcome to attend. Watch your and future newsletters for more information and please call to sign up by August 13th. 4-H Summer Foodie Camp Caroline M. Cruz County Extension Agent Urban Youth Development Eligibility Forms are the member s responsibility to complete for any competitive event regardless of the day of competition. Even if you are not missing school, you still need to turn in an eligibility form. Dates: July 24 th July 25 th Time: 9:00 am 4:00 pm Ages: 10 yr. 13 yr. (4-H members 14 yrs. and up are needed to serve as Camp Leaders) Location: County Extension Office *Bring a sack lunch; snacks and refreshments provided Registration & Fee: Register by July 16 th -members 4-H members no charge; $15 for non Explore the world of food and nutrition in this fun Foodie Camp! Learn about food and nutrition from the garden, make a healthy and tasty recipe, learn about MyPlate, explore the science of food, use your food as art, learn food safety, and complete the 4-H Food Challenge! Non 4-H members are welcome!
2 Page 2 Special Interest Projects DOG PROJECT The Dog project is a great way to get exercise outdoors, while training your dog and gaining a variety of skills. 4-H members new to the project will participate in a six week course before integrating into the main group, ensuring focused beginner training for incoming students. Current dog project members are gearing up for the State 4-H Dog Show to be held July at the Lone Star Convention Center. New members interested in participating in this project should check back in August to find out how to get involved. VET SCIENCE PROJECT The 4-H Veterinary Science Project is a 5 year curriculum based project with a set number of lessons and activities, that gives youth interested in veterinary medicine a chance to work in the field and see if they would like to pursue it as a career. After a member has completed the program, they may apply to take a test to become a Certified Veterinary Assistant. If you have been attending, or are interested in the Conroe Vet Science project, please contact the 4-H Office. The group is in a transition phase and we are trying to determine the interest in it. The Magnolia Vet Science Project meets at the First Baptist Church on 1488 the 3rd Thursday of the month at 6:30pm. Contact Edna Griswold at about the Magnolia Vet Science Project. Livestock On April 21st, the Montgomery County 4-H Livestock Judging Team competed in the District 9 Livestock Judging Contest at the Texas A&M campus. The Jr. Team of Kali Muniz, Caelan Pearson, Katilyn Cole, Brennan Boggs and Gaven Smith placed 2 nd, with a team score of 998. Kali Muniz placed 3 rd Overall Junior Individual. She also placed 1 st in Junior Beef Selection. Caelan Pearson placed 9 th Overall Junior Individual. Brennan Boggs placed 3 rd in Junior Sheep Selection. The team was awarded plaques and rosettes. The Intermediate team of Sarah Jones, Tyler Boggs, Alex Muniz, and Tate Schiel placed 6 th with a score of 1,240. Sarah Jones placed 14 th Overall Intermediate Individual. Tyler Boggs placed 16 th Overall Intermediate Individual. The team was awarded with rosettes. Livestock Judging is open to all eligible 4-H youth. State Fair of Texas and Heart of Texas Entry Night - If you would like to show at either of these shows, you need to come to the Extension Office on Thursday, August 9th from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. Exhibitor and parent must be present. Please bring cash or your checkbook to pay the entry fees and the member s social security number. Beef exhibitors should bring registration papers as well. BEEF Guadalupe Valley Pecan Classic Steer & Heifer Show - July 13 & 14 in Seguin. TCCA
3 Page 3 Sanctioned - Entry fee is $45 for ring A and $15 for ring b. Entries are to be postmarked by July 10th. For details, contact texasag2003@hotmail.com. Major Show Steer Tag Orders - If you would like to show a steer at any of the major shows, you must first order a tag and get the steer validated. We are now taking late tag orders. Late tags cost $20 and orders are due to the Extension Office by June 14th. Validation will be on Monday, June 25th at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds Livestock Barn from 4:00pm - 7:00pm. MEMBERS MUST BE PRESENT. HORSE District 4-H Horse Show - June at the Brazos County Expo. Approximately 15 members from our county will be participating. Good luck! State 4-H Horse Show - July in Abilene LAMB AND GOAT State Fair Lamb and Goat Tag Orders - If you would like to show a lamb or goat at the State Fair of Texas, you must first order tags. We are now taking late tag orders. Late tags cost $20 each and orders are due to the 4-H Office by June 14th. Validation will be held on Monday, June 25th FROM 4:00 pm to 7:00pm at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds Livestock Barn. MEMBERS MUST BE PRESENT. Cross Timbers Lamb and Goat Camp - June in Stephenville. - Topics include project selection, animal health and management, feeding and nutrition, shearing/clipping, exercising, showmanship. Cost is $100 per youth member, $50 per adult member and $25 per lamb/goat if the camp provides them. Adult supervision is required. POULTRY State Fair of Texas Broiler Orders - If you would like to show broilers at the State Fair of Texas, you must first place your orders with the 4-H Office. Orders are placed in increments of 25 at a cost of $1.30 per chick. Orders are due to the 4-H Office by June 14th. Turkey Orders - Turkey orders for the Montgomery County Fair / Major Shows must be placed by June 28th. Turkeys cost $3.50 each. Order forms will be mailed to club managers and will be available at the 4-H Office or online at under Forms and Downloads. SWINE State Fair Swine Tag Orders - If you would like to show a barrow at the State Fair of Texas, you must first order tags and attend validation. We are now taking late tag orders. NEW DATE!!! Late tags orders are due by June 5th at a cost of $20 per head. Validation will be held on June 25th at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds Livestock Barn from 4:00pm - 7:00pm. MEMBERS MUST BE PRESENT. Quality Counts Verification: Quality Counts is an online training and test that members must complete before entering to show at any of the major shows or the county fair. It was introduced last year, so most members are covered. However, because there are two versions, one for Juniors and one for Seniors, you may have to re-take yours. If you will be turning 14 before August 31st, 2012, you will need to take the Senior version of the test. If you are showing at the State Fair of Texas, this must be completed before August 9th.
4 Page 4 Camps and Recreation The second annual 4-H Volunteer Conference is set for July 27-29, 2012 in San Antonio. Whether you have been a volunteer for 1, 12 or 20 years, the conference offers something for everyone! Why Should You Attend the Conference? Over 30 educational workshops focusing on 4-H projects and opportunities Pre-conference session on Friday afternoon for newer volunteers, highlighting 4-H basics Learn the latest and greatest of what s going on in the Texas 4-H program Enjoy an energizing and motivational keynote address Network with volunteers from around the great state of Texas Because every 4-H member deserves a trained volunteer! Registration is open on 4-H Connect. For more information, visit: volunteer_conference. Horizons This is a camp for youth who have completed grades 4-8. This camp focuses around project enhancement, career exploration, and personal/professional development. Participants choose their focus area where they will receive approximately 16 hours of instruction and introduction to careers in the field. Evening activities are geared towards professional development and workforce preparation, and of course, camp recreation and games! Dances each night! It is held at the Texas 4-H Center in Brownwood July 3-7. The registration fee is $275 if done by June 14. Late registration costs $289 June This includes all meals, lodging, refreshments, health care services, facility and programming fees. Register at texas4hcenter.tamu.edu. Texas 4-H Golf Challenge - July 9-10 in Canton. This is a two day golf experience for youth ages Workshops, 2 catered meals, golf professional clinic, evening social and 18 hole Golf Challenge are included for a fee of $180 per 3 person team. Register on 4-H Connect by June 25th. Non 4-H members are welcome. Visit for more details. Texas 4-H Outdoor Challenge - June 30 - July 1st. This is a contest with teams of 2 members who compete in events like fishing, rifle, shotgun, archery, kayaking, climbing, knot tying, outdoor identification, camping skills and orienteering. There is no time allotted for training, so all participants should be experienced in these areas, including the safe handling, loading and shooting of firearms PRIOR to competing. Register on 4-H Connect by June 15th. The registration fee is $30 and there are several options available for lodging/meals. For more details, visit texas4-h.tamu.edu/outdoor. Prime Time I and II - Prime Time is a co-educational residential camp featuring traditional camp experiences such as kayaking, shooting sports, challenge course, environmental education, arts and crafts, dancing, swimming and lots more. Prime Time I is for youth who have completed grades 5-8. It takes place July Prime Time II is for youth who have completed grades 2-5.
5 Page 5 It takes place July Early registration ends June 14 for a fee of $225. Late registration ends June 23 for a fee of $236. Record Books & Awards Record Books and awards applications are due to the 4-H Office by June 11th. County Record Book Judging will be held on June 18th. District Record Book Judging will be held on July 18th. County Awards Banquet will be held on August 14th The Montgomery County 4-H Awards Program is designed to recognize the accomplishments of 4-H ers for their project work, leadership skills, personal growth and development and participation in various 4-H sponsored activities. The following awards are presented at the Annual 4-H Awards Banquet in August of each year: Gold Star Danforth I Dare You Silver Star Bronze Star Club Secretary Club Treasurer Club Scrapbook Club Community Service Honor Club Family & Consumer Science Record Book Agriculture Record Book Non-Traditional Record Book Record Book Completion Outstanding 4-H Adult Leaders Unsung Hero All awards and record books are due to the 4-H Office by June 11th. County Star Award Interviews will be held on June 18th. Please make sure and set an appointment for your interview when you drop off your record book. Please review the Awards Handbook for rules, guidelines and applications for the Montgomery County 4-H Awards Program. Volunteers needed for record book judging on June 18th. Adult volunteers are needed to judge county record books. Even if you have never assisted with this task before, we could still use your help!
