Record keeping is a skill you will need for the rest of your life. Our memories fade with time. We need to write it down so we remember what we did. You need to know what you did to be able to improve on next year. Job applications, scholarship applications, college applications all ask about knowledge and skills, extracurricular activities, leadership and community service. These are all the same things that are required in your 4 H record book. Come and go event. Record books can be turned in at this time if you want. Call to sign up by June 8th. Office Hours 8:00am - 12:00pm 1:00pm - 5:00pm June 13 4:30pm Deadline to submit a 4 H record book for county judging M. Michelle Mihalek The Montgomery County 4 H Awards Program is designed to recognize the accomplishments of 4 H members for their project work, leadership skills, personal growth and development, and participation in various 4 H sponsored activities. The handbook contains award descriptions, rules, and applications. It is available on the 4 H website at: agrilifecdn.tamu.edu/montgomery4h/files/2010/07/awards Program Handbook.pdf. All awards applications and record books are due to the 4 H Office by June 13th. Cruz County Extension Agent Urban Youth Development Bronze Star Club Secretary Club Treasurer Club Scrapbook Club Community Service Honor Club Unsung Hero Family & Consumer Science Record Book Outstanding 4 H Adult Leader Record Book Completion Agriculture Record Book Non Traditional Record Book Eligibility Forms (No Pass, No Play) are the member s responsibility to complete for any competitive 4 H event regardless of the day of competition. Even if you are not missing school, you still need to turn in an eligibility form. Educational programs of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service are open to all people without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, genetic information or veteran status. The Texas A&M University System, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the County Commissioners Courts of Texas Cooperating
2 Special Interest Projects Dog Project 2 In the dog project, participants learn about dog care and training. Beginners work on obedience and showmanship/conformation, while advanced members work on agility and drill or rally. Not all members take their dogs to shows, but they train and practice like they are going to. Dogs may be purebred or mixed and age is not a factor. All dogs must be up to date on vaccinations. A list of required vaccinations is available. After approval of shot records, new dogs / handlers will either take a beginner s obedience class offered in the fall with an evaluation at the end or schedule an evaluation before being integrated into the main group. To get on the beginner s class interest list, please call the 4 H Office at The State 4 H Dog Show will be in Belton, July 8 10, Good luck to all of the Montgomery County 4 H members who will be participating this year! State Fair of Texas Non-Livestock Opportunities The State Fair of Texas offers several Non Livestock contests for 4 H members to compete in. These contests include : Ag Product ID Public Speaking Contest Food Challenge Job Interview Contest Livestock Judging Science Fair Wildlife Contest Skillathons (Beef, Sheep, Swine) Registration for these contests will take place at State Fair / Heart O Texas Entry Night on Thursday, August 18th at the Extension Office from 4:00pm 7:00pm. For more details on each of these contests please visit A Creative Arts Competition is also available at the State Fair of Texas that allows members to enter baked goods and crafts. Each person desiring to enter articles in the Creative Arts Department Competition must register using the entry form and mail by Friday, July 22 which is the closing date for registration. The entry form along with the rules and regulations can be found at: 4-H Roundup Texas 4 H Roundup 2016 will be held at Texas A&M University June 6 9. Texas 4 H Roundup is an event with both qualifying and invitational contests for youth between the ages of 11 and 18. County and District Roundups are open to all ages of 4 H members from 9 to 18. This year, Montgomery County 4 H will be well represented on the state level. The following members are advancing to State 4 H Roundup: 1st Place Horse Judging Team consisting of Taylor Cantrell, Clara Holt, and Olivia Hubert; 2nd Place Consumer Decision Making Team consisting of Cade Ingram, Hale Ingram, Abbigail LeBlanc, and Coltin Walton; 4th Place Duds to Dazzle Team consisting of Bethany Halgas, Clara Holt, Sarah Mayfield, and Tess O Brien. 4 Livestock Projects State Fair / Heart O Texas Entry Night Thursday, August 18th at the Extension Office from 4:00pm 7:00pm. If you would like to show at either of these shows, you need to come to the Extension Office on this date. Exhibitor and parent must be present. Bring cash or checkbook to pay for entry fees. All exhibitors must bring their social security number and Quality Counts Verification number. Beef heifer exhibitors need to bring registration papers and must have validated their heifers. See validation information below for all species. BEEF Any member who wishes to show a steer at any of the major shows must first go through the validation process. Late major show steer tag orders are due to the Extension Office by June 1st. Tags cost $20 each. Validation will take place on Monday, June 27 at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds from 4:00pm 7:00pm. State Fair Heifer Validation: Heifers who were not validated last fall, or heifers who have changed owners must be validated. Exhibitors who need to validate heifers should contact the 4 H office to order a UIN for $12 per head. Validation will take place on June 23rd. Original registration papers must be brought to the 4 H Office to be scanned prior to the validation date. HORSE The District 9 4 H horse show will be held June in Conroe, Texas. The State 4 H Horse Show is taking place July Good luck to all exhibitors! LAMB & GOAT Any member who wishes to show a lamb or goat at the State Fair of Texas must first go through the validation process. Late State Fair Lamb and Goat tag orders are due to the 4 H Office by June 1st. Late tags cost $20 each. Validation will take place on Monday, June 27th at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds from 5:00pm 7:00pm. POULTRY 4 State Fair broiler orders are due to the 4 H Office by Thursday, June 9th. The order forms can be obtained at the 4 H Office or from the following link: montgomery4h/files/2010/07/2016 State Fair Broiler Order.pdf. Chicks will be picked up on August 25th. Major Show & Montgomery County Fair Turkey orders are due to the 4 H Office by Thursday, August 11th. Order forms can be obtained from the 4 H Office or from the following link: montgomery4h/files/2010/07/ FamilyTurkeyOrder.pdf. Turkeys will be picked up around the first week of November. SWINE Any member who wishes to show swine at the State Fair of Texas must first go through the validation process. Validation will take place on Monday, June 27th at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds from 4:00pm 7:00pm.
5 5 Summer Camps at the 4-H Conference Center 4 H Summer Camp Registration is now open at the Texas 4 H Conference Center near Lake Brownwood. Visit the Conference Center website to check out the wide variety of camps and to register: texas4hcenter.tamu.edu Here are a few of the camps offered at The Texas 4 H Conference Center: Horizons June 27 July 1st for youth who have completed grades 4 8 A camp featuring 6 different 4 H project learning programs. This year s projects include Leather and Lacing, Robotics, Food Challenge, Wildlife, and Cardboard Camp. Registration is $280 by June 12th or $294 after June 12th. Registration covers meals, lodging, refreshments, health care services, and facility and programming fees. Fishing Camp July 25 27th for youth in 3rd grade and up. Participants will have the opportunity to learn everything they need to know about fishing in Texas waters as well as the challenge course, nightly dances and team challenges. Registration costs $180 by June 13th or $189 by June 21st. Beginner Shooting Sports Camps Camp 1 is July 11 13th and Camp 2 is July This camp is designed to safely introduce members to the shooting sports project as well as allow them to participate in their favorite 4 H activities such as dances, challenge course and team challenges. Registration costs $180 by June 13th or $189 by June 21st. Prime Time Members who have completed grades 5 8 July Members who have completed grades 2 5 July A co ed residential camp featuring traditional camp experiences, such as kayaking, shooting sports, challenge course, arts and crafts, environmental education, swimming, dancing and more. Registration costs $230 by June 13th or $242 by June 21. This fee covers meals, lodging, refreshments, health care services, and facility and programming fees. Prime Time Extreme July This camp is a high energy, fast paced program for members in grades 8 11 including wildlife, fishing, kayaking, vet science, dancing, a challenge course, knockerball soccer and more. Early registration is until June 12 for a fee of $230. Late registration is $242 until June 21. Registration fee covers meals, lodging, refreshments, health care services, and facility and programming fees. Scholarships This year s Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Montgomery County 4 H Scholarship award recipients are: Natalie Brown Magnolia 4 H Taylor Cantrell Willis 4 H Kali Koy Champion 4 H Joshua Fleming Champion 4 H Savannah Martin Morning Stars 4 H Christian Webster Willis 4 H The winners were honored at the Texas Extension Education Association Montgomery County Scholarship Luncheon on May 3rd. 6 6 County Council County Council meetings are held the 4th Monday of the month at 7:00pm at the Extension Office, unless stated otherwise. All members are welcome and encouraged to attend. The next County Council meeting will be held on Saturday, August 20th at the Leadership Team Training at the Lone Star Convention Center. Watch for more information on the training. ELECTION RESULTS Officer elections for the year were held on April 25th. Congratulations to these 4 H ers on their recent accomplishment! They will be working hard over the next few months to plan the new 4 H year, prepare for the banquet, and set up the County 4 H Leadership Team Training. This is a great way for officers to learn their duties and responsibilities in the positions they ve been elected to, and for adult volunteers to gain the resources they need to better support youth members and projects. This year s training is scheduled for Saturday, August 20th and will be held at the Lone Star Convention Center.
