1 4-H Newsletter Special points of interest: Playday Series Information Howard College Lamb & Goat Camp Upcoming Validations Veterinary Science Skillathon Major Stock Show Results HEAD HEART HANDS HEALTH April 2010 Inside this issue: Junior Leader Lab 2 We had several kids attending the major stock shows this season. Here are some results. D Nae Johnson placed 4th at San Antonio in the Heavy Weight Medium Wool Lambs and Michael Porter placed 2nd with his York. Other exhibitors in San Antonio included Pake Jones, Colton Thompson, and Skylar Jones with their steers. Pake Jones placed 2nd at Houston with his Light Weight American Breed Cross and Dakota Greer placed 11th. Skylar Jones and Colton Thompson also showed steers at Houston as well as Jaycee and Dakota Johnson with goats. M;Keison Guerrero received the Showmanship Award in San Angelo. She received a buckle for her achievement. Taylor Roberts had Bread Champion in American Fuzzy Lop. Victoria Huckaby had the Breed Champion English Angora. Jackie Milton Had Reserve Breed Champion with her French Lop and Jersey Wooly. Sierra Isbell received Breed Champion with her Himilayan. Jessi Isbell was Breed Champion with her Jersey Wooly. Ashlee Graves was Breed Champion with her Netherland Dwarf. M Keison Guerrero was reserve Breed Champion with her Thrianta. Others who showed rabbits at San Angelo and placed were: Kara Grace Egan, Addie Quintana, Cord Isbell, Ashlee Graves, Jessi Isbell, Victoria Huckaby, Jackie Milton and Sierra Isbell.Other San Angelo exhibitors included Pake Jones, Colton Thompson, Dakota Johnson, Skylar Jones and Matt Tanner. Pake Jones was our only 4-H exhibitor to enter the Sandhills Stock show in Odessa and D Nae Johnson is entered at the Star of Texas Rodeo in Austin. Ft. Worth exhibitors included Pake Jones, Colton Thompson, Skylar Jones and Dakota Greer. Congratulations and job well done to all who participated. Its time to start thinking about next year. D-2 Rifle Contest 2 Calendar 3 Summer Job Opportunity 4 Roping School 4 Submit Bill to 4-H Congress 5 Horse Project 5 TSC Supporting 4-H Through Paper Clover Campaign The National 4-h Council along with the Texas 4-H Youth Development Foundation is pleased to announce the upcoming Tractor Supply Company Paper Clovers campaign. Beginning Friday, March 26th Sunday, April 18th, 4-H clovers will be sold in TSC stores in all 44 states for $1 or more by TSC store clerks and prominently displayed in-store. They are interested in seeing the 4-H ers and their families promote the event so that more funds are raised in their stores and go back to 4-H ers in their communities. Sixty percent of the funds raised by the paper clovers sold will go directly to the county 4-H program in which it was raised. If you would be interested in helping with promotions for this event, please contact the Extension Office.
2 HEAD HEART HANDS HEALTH 4-H Newsletter Page 2 Junior Leader Lab D-2 Rifle Contest District Roundup If you are interested in being a counselor at the North Region 2010 Junior Leader Lab you need to get your applications in. They are due April 1, 2010 and you must be able to serve from May 30 to June 3rd. The cost for a counselor is $90. If you just want to attend this camp, 4-H connect will open on March 29 and will close on April 16. This camp fills up fast and is on a first come first serve basis. The sooner you get signed up the greater your chances of getting the events you want. Don t miss this great opportunity. The District 2 Rifle Contest will be held on Saturday April 17. The deadline to enter this competition is Monday, April 12. You do not have to enter this event through 4-H connect. Watch the Extension Extras in the Post Dispatch for more information as it becomes available. District Roundup will be held Saturday, May 1 in Levelland. 4-H Connect opens up Thursday, April 1 through Thursday, April 15. Do not miss this deadline to sign up. Once they close this event it will NOT be opened again for late entries. 4-H Playdays Scheduled You know you re a horse person when your horse get new shoes more than you do. In an effort to beat the heat, the playday series has been scheduled for every Saturday in May at the Post Stampede Rodeo Grounds. This year we will hold five playdays with flags, poles, barrels, goat tie and a roping session. Anyone is welcome to attend. We will still have four age groups: 5 and under, 6-9, 10-14, and We will raffle off a pair of Jody Mason spurs again this year and will be asking all kids who attend to sell six tickets. All who participate will be eligible for a buckle and end of year prizes. We are hoping to have a end of season swim party again with all buckles and prizes being given before the Post Stampede Rodeo. Community Service Opportunity An excellent Community Service opportunity is to help with donations to help with the Close City School Restoration Fund. They will be having a community garage sale April 9 and 10 and need lots of stuff. They will take anything..clothes, kitchen/household goods, or furniture. If you don t want it, they will take it. The timing could not be more perfect with Spring cleaning upon us. They will pick items up as long as you are within an hour of Post. So if you need a community service project for your record book or just feel the need to help out, contact the Extension Office and we will get all the information to you.

Adult supervision is required at this camp. They only accept the first 200 entries and you will no be able to get a refund after May 1. The camp will cost $85.00 per person. It will include six meals and a camp tee shirt or cap. If you do not take your own animal, it will be an extra $ You need to bring all necessary show equipment if possible (electric clippers, blocking table, hand shears, wood cards, and chains if you borrow a goat). All participants must be nine years old or entering the third grade. The registration is the Sunday before the camp of your choice between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon at the Howard County Fairgrounds. If you need a registration form or would like to obtain a list of hotels in the area, contact the Extension Office and we can get the information to you.

Nomimate Someone for $2,500 Barron Prize The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes seeks nominations for its 2010 awards. The Barron Prize honors young people ages 8 to 18 who have made a significant positive difference to people and our planet. Each year, ten national winners each receive $2,500 to support their service work or higher education. Nomination deadline is April 30. Upcoming Validations Steer Validation and 2010 State Fair of Texas Lamb & Goat Validation The Steer Validation program is already upon us. The tags will be $10 and that is to be collected when you place your order. The deadline for ordering is April 16 at 12:00 noon. All steers will be validated between June 1 and June 30, Please note that validation does NOT automatically enter the exhibitor in a major livestock show or the county show. Please contact the office if you have any questions. The 2010 State Fair of Texas Lamb & Goat Validation is to be completed by April 14. Tags will be $10. This is only validation for the State Fair of Texas. Do not purchase these tags if you are not planning on attending this show. If you do not purchase your tags by this date they will be $25. Please mark your calendars. As always, please contact the office if you have any questions. 21st Annual 4-H Team Roping School The annual 4-H Team Roping School will be at South Plains College in Levelland. This school will be directed at the development of roping and horsemanship skills of youngsters 12 years old to 18 years. Participation is open to all districts of the state. The school will be held June 24-27, 2010 and application forms can be picked up at the Extension Office. The cost of the school will be $ per student plus a $25.00 stall deposit. This includes meals from Thursday evening through Sunday at breakfast, 3 nights lodging, stall rent, instruction, insurance, a cattle charge and refreshments. The stall deposit will be refunded at the end of the school when you pass inspection. The school is limited to 30 participants on a firstcome, first-served basis. A $ deposit must be received with the application by May 21, 2010, to confirm a reservation. The $ balance and stall deposit will be due upon arrival. This is a great opportunity and will fill up fast. They had a full house last year with some kids not getting to participate; so call for your forms today.
5 Page 5 4-H Members can submit a Bill for Texas 4-H Congress For 2010, any 4-H member regardless of age, has the opportunity to learn about the legislative process and submit a legislative bill for consideration by the 4-H members participating in the 2010 Texas 4-H Congress. Working with a volunteer/parent a young person can explore the issues affecting the youth of Texas and how those issues can be addressed. From research to vote, 4-H members, either as an individual or as a group, can research, write, and submit a legislative bill for consideration during Texas 4-H Congress. Bills selected will be assigned to a House and Senate member for the mock legislative process in Austin. For more information on researching, writing and submitting a legislative bill, refer to the Texas 4-H Congress website. 4-H Veterinary Science Skillathon is back The 4-H Veterinary Science Skillathon will once again be held at Texas 4-H Roundup in June With this still being a new contest, guidelines are still being finalized. Here s what we do know at this time: This will be a hands-on contest with multiple parts You must have been enrolled in a structured veterinary science project using curriculum for at least one full calendar year. Enrollment will be certified by the County Extension Agent. There will be an application process Applications are open to Intermediate and Senior aged Texas 4-H members The contest will be held on Thursday, June 10, 2010 at Texas 4-H Roundup We ll need adult volunteers interested in helping work the contest Applications are due March 26. If you have any questions, please contact the Extension Office. Important Dates for Horse Project A dog may be man s best friend, but the horse wrote history. The horse project will begin this Spring with many camps, clinics and shows coming up. If you plan on participating in the District Horse Show, all validation must be done by April 28, Watch the Extension Extras in the Post Dispatch for reminders and updates.
