The Bell County 4-H Exchange club is an organization which nurtures education and relationships with a similar group in another state, striving to learn about their culture and environment and teach them about ours in the great state of Texas. It is a two year commitment from our members with them traveling to visit the state they are exchanging with for a week and also hosting for a week the alternate year. This term our youth will be exchanging with Thurston County, Washington. If you would consider donating $25, $50, or $100 to sponsor event t-shirts for the current term, your business name will be featured on the back of the shirt and also featured in our end-of-term journal detailing our travels. 7 Awards ADULT LEADER AWARDS Bell County 4-H volunteer leaders and Bell County 4-H County Council will solicit nominations and vote to select two individuals to be recognized at the Annual 4-H Banquet for Distinguished Service. One will be chosen by the MAB and one chosen by 4-H members. 4-H volunteer leaders who are chosen for this award include outstanding club managers, leaders, project leaders, workshop leaders and volunteer leaders who go above and beyond their leader capabilities. OUTSTANDING LEADER AWARD- The Outstanding Leader Award chosen from the 4-H member requires an essay no longer than 1 page. The ESSAYS ARE DUE May 2, 2016! The essay should include the following: Name of Person Making Nomination Leader Nominated Date Why do you think this leader is an outstanding leader? What does this leader do that is outstanding? Examples: Teaches others new projects, takes 4-Her s on tours, leads club, etc. How has this leader helped you? How has this leader helped others? Nominations should be ed to siraley@ag.tamu.edu Bell County 4-H Awards All 4-H members applying for awards (Gold, Silver or Bronze Star; Rookie, Honor Roll, All-Star Letterman; Danforth, Senior Awards Outstanding Community Service, must submit the appropriate paperwork and applications by May 2, Award Interviews will be later in May at the Bell County Extension Office. Record books for county competition will be due in June. Awards age based on 4-H Grade as of August 31, 2015 Graduating seniors for the 2016 year, who are members of 4-H, may apply to receive a Senior Award, to be presented at the Bell County 4-H Awards Banquet. Seniors must have been active and meet the requirements listed on the application. Tractor Supply s Spring Paper Clover fundraiser will be held April 13-24, Up to 65% of the funds raised in the Temple and Killeen stores will benefit Bell County 4-H. Stores that have 4-H member participation during the campaign raise an average of 40% more than stores that do not have participation. If you are interested in participating at one the TSC in the county, please contact Barbara Wood at woodbtwice@gmail.com District 8 Rifle Contest Save the date! If you are interested in competing in the District 8 Rifle Contest that will take place on Saturday, May 14, 2016, in Buffalo. Entry deadline is April 22nd on 4-H Connect. This is a 3 position rifle contest and light rifle contest. Contact Sheryl Raley if you have any questions regarding this contest. Clover Kids Meetings & Clover Kids Fair April 16 Temple Public Library, May 21 Location TBD, and June 18 Temple Public Library The Bell county 4-H Clover Kids Fair will take place on Saturday, May 21, The location is yet to be determined. The Clover Kid Fair is a chance for them to participate in a fair for Clover Kids and show what they have been learning! This is a great opportunity for them to become more familiar with what to expect as a real 4-H member down the road. Starting time and length of this event will depend on the number of Clover Kids that participate. 9 Texas 4-H Congress A select number of 4-H Delegates will be allotted to each district. So don t be late applying!!! Bell County 4-H will pay for those who are accepted! Texas 4-H Congress allows 4-H members to experience the law making process first hand by writing, submitting, and then serving as a member of the House of Representatives, the Senate, the Press, or as a Lobbyist. From these roles, the 4-H members determine the fate of each bill submitted. Lobbyist for Texas 4-H Congress The Lobbyist group is designed for 4-H members who have attended Texas 4-H Congress in the past. The responsibility of the Lobbyist group is to identify certain bills and then lobby members of the House and Senate to either pass or defeat the bill. Lobbyist should be knowledgeable about Texas 4-H Congress and the schedule that it follows. Lobbyist members should be prepared to and have the ability to approach other 4-H members and persuade House and Senate members for support. The Lobbyist group will hold a by invitation only reception for House and Senate Members, along with Congress Leadership. Submit an online application through 4HConnect between February 15 to March 31, Press Corp for Texas 4-H Congress The Texas 4-H Congress Press Corps play an extremely important part in the success of the event. Press Corps members can be either first time or returning 4-H members to 4-H Congress. Individuals applying for Press Corps should have strong skills in writing, word processing, interviewing, photography, and focused on making deadlines. The press corps is responsible for the publishing of a daily newspaper and help maintaining a web page/electronic communication. Submit an online application through 4HConnect from February 15 to March 31, Submission of Legislative Bills Any 4-H member, regardless of age or planning on attending Texas 4-H Congress, may submit a legislative bill for consideration. Participation in the bill writing exercise allows 4-H members the opportunity to become engaged in the legislative process and the 4-H citizenship project. 4-H members attending Texas 4-H Congress will be required to submit at least one bill (this includes Texas 4-H Council, Tech Team, etc) prior to their registration to the event being accepted. To learn more on how to write and submit a bill download the Preparing a Legislative Bill for Texas 4-H Congress as well as work with your County Extension agent or a volunteer. 10 Livestock Project News State Fair Tag Orders 4-H members who plan to show a lamb, goat or barrow at the State Fair of Texas in 2016 must order validation tags for the number of animals they plan to validate no later than April 11, Call Heidi at the Extension Office to order your tags. Cost is $12 per tag. Horse Validation IMPORTANT~ It is that time again to validate your horses that will be competing at the District 8 Horse Show and/or State 4-H Horse Show. Validation via 4-H Connect is a requirement for the 4-H Horse Shows. Horses must be owned by the 4-H member, their parents, grandparents, legal guardian, or sibling. Horses must be validated by May 1st. A horse must be revalidated each year! The validation of multiple horses is encouraged. Validation instructions are posted on agrlife.org/bell4h Dates March 1 April 15: Cost is $10 per horse April 16 May 1: Cost is $20 per horse District 8 Horse Show: June at Bell County Expo Major Show Steer Tag & Heifer Barcode Orders Bell County validations are now REQUIRING everyone order and pay for their tags up front rather than at time of validation. ALL ORDERS MUST BE HANDLED THROUGH HEIDI OR SHERYL AT THE CEO. It is time to order STATE MARKET STEER & BREEDING HEIFER VALIDATION TAGS for 2016 State Fair of Texas as well as all 2017 Spring Major shows (Fort Worth, San Angelo, San Antonio, Houston and Austin). BCYF and State Market Steer/Breeding Heifer validation will be held on Monday June 27, 2016 from 4-7 PM at the EXPO! Cost of Tags: $12/per Market Steer tag ordered. $10/per Breeding Heifer barcode ordered. Deadline to have orders in the Extension Office is MONDAY April 11, ORDERS NOT PAID BY APRIL 11, 2016 WILL NOT BE ORDERED. LATE ORDERS WILL BE $20.00 PER STEER/HEIFER. Texas 4-H Equine Ambassador Program The Equine Ambassador Program is a special opportunity for advanced 4-Hers to develop their leadership skills to become future leaders in their county 4-H horse program and in the horse industry. Opportunities for growth and development through demonstrations, hands-on learning, leadership training, and fun activities are all part of this rewarding experience! The program is set for June 26-June 30, 2016 at the Lone Oak Retreat in Gainesville, TX. 11 FCS Project News Clothing and Textiles Board presents Sewing 101 This two part class will walk you through the sewing process. At the end of the two classes you will have a project completed that can be entered in the Bell County Youth Fair. RSVP: April 1 with your name and size of ready wear pants. Cost: will be $15 for pattern, material and supplies Skill Level: Beginners through Advanced; ages 9 and up April 11- Class 1 will include reading and selecting a pattern and cutting out the fabric. April 25- Class 2 will include the sewing of the shorts and tips and tricks for a professional finish. County Council & Ambassadors County Council May Meeting Officer Elections The Bell County 4-H Council will be electing officers for the H year during the May 9th meeting. To run for an officer position, you must submit an Intent to Run form to the County Extension Office on or before May 2, The Intent to Run form can be found on the Bell County 4-H website, Council Community Service Project Show your support to our troops with necessities, snacks, and fun activities! Tips: Soldiers appreciate basic hygiene items, no care package would be complete with some snacks, antibacterial wipes or baby wipes are a great item, pain relievers, playing cards or word finds, and a note of encouragement is always nice to remind them that someone is thinking about and supporting them. They help older youth develop leadership and communication skills, help the public understand the full scope of the 4-H program, and recruit new members from diverse backgrounds. Bell County 4-H Members must meet the following requirements to be considered for selection as a Bell County 4-H Ambassador: Be at least 14 years of age as of August 31 on the year of application. Submit a complete application, due on May 2, A formal interview will be given after all applications have been submitted. Members will be notified for interview times. Interviews will be formal dress. RENEWAL OF AMBASSADORS: Meet all activity requirements and minimum points by the application deadline, May 2, 2016, of the current 4-H year to be considered for renewal.
