2 Character Education Pillar Six Citizenship The sixth pillar of our six pillars of Character Education is Citizenship. Citizenship includes making your home, community, and your nation a better place to live for yourself and others. Citizenship is winning and losing gracefully, teaching and helping younger 4-H members with their projects, accepting instructions, and making sure you are a good representative of our community as well as our country when we go to various 4-H events and shows. 4-H members should also get involved in community service projects locally and abroad to help our fellow citizens any way we can. 4-H Sweetheart Contest The Sweetheart Contest was held on January 13 and there were three contestants. Congratulations go out to Rose Buffington who will represent Polk County 4-H as their Sweetheart for We all wish Rose the best in the Queen s contest at the Trinity Neches Livestock Show in March. No Pass No Play for Trinity- Neches Livestock Show 4-H members should keep their grades up in order to be eligible by U.I.L. rules to participate in extracurricular activities. 4-H members must pass the six weeks prior to the Trinity-Neches Livestock Show in order to be considered eligible to show your animal. Relay 4 Life Polk County 4-H will have a booth in this year s Relay 4 Life. We will be raffling a Western Basket. The basket will contain items that go along with the relay s theme, which is Rodeo. If anyone has any items they would like to donate for this basket please come by the Extension office. Polk County 4-H will be selling coke floats and sausage on a stick at the relay on May 1, All 4-H members mark your calendars to be in attendance to help with this year s Relay 4 Life. All proceeds will benefit the 2009 Relay 4 Life.

7 Rabbit Project Group It's getting close; your bunnies will be born soon. Just in time for the cold snap. Make sure to get something up to block the cold wind and lights hung above the cages or heaters in your barn are a good idea. We don't want frozen bunnies. Just be safe and don't burn your barn down! Remember, cold stiff bunnies aren't always dead. Sometimes they just need thawed out. We talked in our meeting a while back about putting them in a bowl of warm water and they'll usually come back. Just make sure to hold their little mouths and noses out of the water. It works! Don't forget about it! Please call me if you have any questions or problems. Day or night, I'm here to help. Also, Tina Smith started a yahoo group called "polkcountytxrabbits" This is a good place for you to post questions and get answers back from several different people. Just go to yahoo groups search out polkcountytxrabbits and send a message through applications asking to be allowed to join the group. Tina will you your approval and you can begin to make posts. Spread the word!! We also have some good info on our website on the how to page so feel free to check it out at ( Please make plans to attend our February 2 nd meeting. Pam Heaton who is a meat pen breeder in Huntsville will be doing a clinic on raising and choosing your meat pens. I think it's a great idea to get information from different breeders. No one breeder is the same. On February 7th at 9:00am there will be a showmanship clinic at the fairgrounds so try to make plans to attend that as well! This will help you to better handle your rabbits as well as prepare you for the Showmanship class at the Trinity Neches. President s Day Extension Office Closed on February 16, Shooting Sports Certification There will be a 4-H shooting sports coaches training held in Shepherd on March 27 & 28, There are several that have inquired on getting certified to help with the shooting sports project group. This will be the closest location in the state for the next several years to get certified. Polk County 4-H will cover the cost of the certification course. It is important to have leaders interested in getting certified to keep the shooting sports program in the county. Please RSVP by February 20 so that we will have time to get you registered.
