Please locate your meeting date and time and announce this to members in advance. If there is a conflict in scheduling, PLEASE CALL US AS SOON AS POSSIBLE IF THE TIME OF YOUR MEETING MUST CHANGE. Please submit the names and contact number for your officers on the attached form. This is to ensure the safety of the 4-H members. Blood & Guts Lesson We are introducing our yearly focus on Health and Fitness lessons. Seven consecutive lessons are being taught this school year that will address specific Grade Level Expectations (GLE s) and Common Core. Each month, we will teach lessons to help you learn to make choices that will enable you to remain healthy and fit. This month s lesson, Blood & Guts will give you an overview of the different systems found in the body. The human body has many organs, each with a different function. Major organ systems in the human body include the respiratory, circulatory, digestive, nervous, and skeletal systems. In this lesson, you will gain information that will help you to make wellinformed decisions concerning your own body. 4-H Fest One of our biggest contest days is 4-H Fall Fest which will be held at Evangeline Elementary School on Saturday, November 9th. The 4-H contests will include the Bicycle Rodeo, Health & Fitness Poster Contest, Rabbit Show, Pet Show, and the Commodity Cookery contests. Rules for these contests will be given to all 4-H ers at the October meeting. The day should be lots of fun. Please encourage all of your members to attend, and we hope to see you, too. Any leaders wishing to help with Fall Fest can call the 4-H office and sign-up. Dates to Remember October 1... 2 Join the Revolution of Responsibility Your club can help celebrate 4-H week by having special programs at school, making and displaying 4-H posters, wear green and white day, or preparing a 4-H exhibit in your school library for EVERYONE to see. We also challenge each club to Join the Revolution of Responsibility by conducting a service project at your school or in your local community during this week. Help your leader by thinking of ways to publicize your club, making part in activities and setting a good example for others. Enrollment Made Easy Please make sure that you proof your enrollment cards before sending them to the 4-H Office. All cards MUST be completely filled out, no initials or nicknames. Any incomplete cards will be returned to the leader for completion. This will avoid delays in your members getting their books. Leaders please send your 4-H Volunteer Enrollment Form to the 4-H Office as soon as possible so that you will be on our contact list. This will ensure that you get all of the up to date information. When sending your enrollment cards back please label the envelope with your school name. Celebrate 4-H! October 6-12 is National 4-H Week. The purpose of this week is to let everyone around you know what 4-H is about. can be used to give your 4-H club visibility. Here are a few more ideas you might want to use. 1. Utilize 4-H Facts on announcements 2. Schedule 4-H members to present at PTA and civic meeting programs. 3. Do a service-learning activity. 4. Display the 4-H flag for the week. Feel free to market your school club and the 4-H program in the best fashion that suites your club and membership! Festival Foods Contest If you would like the rules for the upcoming Cattle & Rice Festival cookery contests please call the office at Please make copies of the rules as needed and distribute to your 4-H ers. 4-H members participating in these contests are responsible for arranging to have their dish brought to the cookery contests. Annual Candy Sale Our annual candy sale is quickly approaching. We will be selling World s Finest Chocolate Candy. This fund raiser provides an opportunity to raise local money as well as help the parish 4-H Foundation. All clubs are encouraged (but not required) to participate. Please get permission from your principal before committing to this project. We must place the order by October 1st and must know how many cases you wish to sell. The candy sale begins with delivery on October 9. For those of you who have committed to sell candy, a separate letter will be ed with the delivery details. Call the 4-H office if you have any questions about this fundraiser. Policy Information In order to keep the 4-H program active and fair to all involved, we find it necessary to clarify some of our policies so that everyone involved is aware of how our program runs. Please take note of the following: No project books will be distributed to any 4-H er until October Meetings. Once a 4-H er pays membership dues, that 4-H er is a member for one (1) year. No 4-H er will be deleted from our files once they join 4-H. Make a Difference Day Slated on October 26, 2013, Make A Difference Day is the largest national day of helping others. Make A Difference Day is a celebration of the power of neighbors helping neighbors. Created by USA WEEKEND Magazine, this international day of service is held every year on the fourth Saturday of October. More than three million people volunteer, making a difference in communities around the world. Old and New Business In this issue of the Leader Update, you will find slips of old and new business which can be used during your meetings. You can cut them out and ask members to volunteer to read them during the business part of the meeting. This gives members who are not officers the opportunity to stand up and report on 4-H happenings. We will begin judging the club meetings in November for the Club-of-the-Month Awards. By taking advantage of the Old and New Business notes, you ll be better prepared and your club meetings will be better, and more business like. This is a good time for all clubs to make sure they have a set of flags. 3 Project Leadership Consider offering your club members the opportunity to do a Show & Tell, Project Talk, Illustrated Talk, or Demonstration on some topic from their project books. This could be presented as the Program Leaders program during the meeting. This past year, we submitted several project books for State Competition, and our books scored low particularly in the section entitled Main Project Leadership. This is where they have to list when they taught, coordinated, organized, or guided others specifically in their project area. For example: A) A younger child enrolled in the Rabbit project could make a poster on the breeds of rabbits and share it with the members. An older child might demonstrate how to groom one for a show. B) A child in the Six Easy Bites project might demonstrate how to make a simple healthy snack. A photo exhibit in the library can be arranged for the members that are enrolled in the photography projects. The program leaders can arrange this with the librarian. Be creative and help your members to arrange to do their demo or displays. Look in the front of the books for what is required or recommended activities. Of course this will have to be age appropriate. Some of the project books will list suggested topics of project presentations or you or the 4-H member or parent, may call us for suggestions at Not every child will be able to do this, but surely there are a few that are willing and capable. Especially, if they are interested in state records competition. Let s give them the opportunity and prepare them for success! 5 October 1, 2013 TO: ORGANIZATIONAL LEADER RE: Dear Leader: OFFICER TRAINING MEETING We are in the process of gearing up for officer training to be held on Monday, October 14 th, at Lafayette Middle School from 4:45p.m. until 6:00p.m. The school is located on the corner of Congress and University Streets in Lafayette. It is very important that you stress to your officers that they need to attend to learn and have a better understanding of their responsibilities as an officer. We are requesting that you complete the registration form and return it to us by Monday, October 7 th. To ensure the safety of the 4-H members, we are asking that whoever is planning to pick up each officer at the end of the training bring the provided Ride Pass ticket that will be delivered to each officers at the October club meeting. These should given to that officer in order to claim or leave with their 4-H member. Parents/ leaders must report to the assigned classroom for that officer and present the ticket before leaving with the 4-H member. Four-Hers may be picked up from their assigned classroom, and those classroom assignments will be posted on the wall in the school lobby. Parking will be available in the lot to the left side of the school. No parking is permitted in front of the school. Your cooperation and patience are greatly appreciated. Contests to be held that day will be the Dog Show, Pet Show, Bicycle Rodeo, Health & Fitness Poster Contest, Rabbit Show, and Cookery Contest. We should all try to attend and participate NEW BUSINESS #2 The Club-of-the Month Contest will begin in November. Our club will be judged on how we conduct our meetings.
