4 Physical Activity and Youth Obesity has quickly become a major health problem for Louisiana. Within our state, over half of the residents are either overweight or obese. Sedentary lifestyle and poor nutrition are among the main causes. Louisiana children are perhaps the 4 th most obese and overweight in the United States. This is attributed to the fact that they get little physical activity at home or in school. Overweight or obese children usually grow up to be overweight or obese adults. Being overweight or obese increases the risk for developing chronic diseases, such as heart disease, stroke, arthritis, diabetes, and some cancers. We can help to prevent these things by eating right and exercising. There are many things that we can do to increase physical activity during the day. Here are a few suggestions: Take the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator. Go for a walk instead of watching T.V. Get up and move during the commercials of your favorite T.V. show Ride a bike to a friend s house Here s some physical activity trivia: True or False 1. Using the stairs burns twice as many calories as walking. 2. It would take approximately 5 million steps to walk from the east-coast to the west-coast of Australia. 3. Well-trained athletes are extremely fit. Compared to them, the average heart pumps up to 36,000 more times per day and 13 million more times per year. 4. Running burns more energy than walking over the same distance. Answers. 1.) True. When you climb stairs your body is repeatedly raising and lowering itself, using all of the large muscle groups in your hips, buttocks, thighs and lower legs. This provides a better workout as you are required to use more force to climb each stair compared to each step you take when walking. 2.) True. 3.) Ture. In 1 minute the heart of a well-trained athlete pumps the same amount of blood in beats as an inactive person s heart pumps in 70 to 75 beats. 4.) False. Walking and running the same distance burns the same amount of energy or calories, walking just takes longer! Robin Landry, Area Nutrition Agent 1. Mill Broke paper scrap & trimmings 2.
