Welcome to a new year of 4-H activities! We are super excited that you ve joined 4-H this year and hope you are looking forward to a year full of learning and fun! So how do you know of all the fun things you can do in 4-H? Well, the first place to look to find out about what s going on in 4-H is The Cloverleaf you ll receive at your monthly meeting. Take it home to let your family know which events interest you. Information about 4-H activities - newsletters, calendars, forms, etc., - can also be found on our web site. Officer Training Helps Club Officers Get A Good Start On The Year Good officers are the key to an active and successful 4-H club. Have you been chosen to serve as an officer for your local club? If so, you have an important job to do for your club members. Our Officer Training Workshop is your chance to learn exactly what your responsibilities as a club officer are and how to best carry out those responsibilities. Our parish Officer Training Workshop will be held on October 24, from 4:45 p.m. to 6:00p.m. at the Burton Coliseum Chalkley Room. Club Leader Training Will Help Your Club Get A Good Start On The Year Fun and involved club leaders are the key to an active and successful 4-H club. As a club leader you have an opportunity to impact many young lives around you through this program. You also have an important job to make sure your club members are having as much fun as possible and learning at the same time. Our Leader Training Workshop is your chance to learn exactly what your responsibilities as a club leader are and how to best carry out those responsibilities. Our parish Leader Training Workshop will be held on October 24, from 4:45 p.m. to 6:00p.m. at the Burton Coliseum Chalkley Room. 4-H Camp Grant Walker Needs Your Ideas! Catch-phrase for Camp Contest! What s a good theme for 4-H Summer Camp? Send us your most creative ideas for a slogan -- in 7 words or less. To enable the campers once again to have more choice in the design of their t-shirts, illustrations must accompany the phrase and will be part of the contest. The contest is open to all 4-H Club members. The winning slogan will be one that is brief and catchy, capturing the spirit of 4-H Camp Grant Walker. The slogan will be used on all publicity for camp and on the camp T-shirt and the winner will receive a monetary award. Think fast the deadline is Friday, October 28, 2016! Submissions must also include the following: Full name and age of person submitting the slogan Parish/4-H Club Complete mailing address Telephone number Contest entries will be judged by the LAE4-HA Ways and Means Committee and the 4-H Camp Staff. After final selection, the winner will be notified and asked to sign a release for the slogan to be used in all publicity for the camp as well as on the T-shirt. 2 Project Clubs Organizing for the 4-H Year While you are a member of your school s 4-H club, you can also participate in project clubs that are a part of our parish 4-H program. Project clubs are groups that conduct all of their activities in one project area. If any of these project areas interest you, come be a part of the fun. You ll learn more about the project area, get to participate in 4-H activities outside of your regular school club and make new friends who have the same interests as you do. 4-H Shooting Sports Program Do you like to hunt, shoot trap or skeet, shoot archery, or want to learn about shooting? Shooting sports club enrollment is October 17 at 5:30 pm inside the Burton Coliseum. ALL FIRST TIME MEMBERS ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND THIS MEETING!!! If you are a first time member of the shooting sports club and you miss this meeting you will not be allowed to join shooting sports club this year. Returning members do not have to attend this meeting, but can if they wish. You do not have to have a firearm to attend or participate as our program has firearms to use. ALONE WE CAN DO SO LITTLE. TOGETHER WE CAN DO SO MUCH. HELLEN KELLER Horse Project Club Interested in Horses? Then this is the club for you. All interested 4-H members can participate in this club. You do not have to have a horse to participate, only a strong interest in horses. Some of the activities the club has planned are hands-on riding techniques used for basic horsemanship, horse care, and performance events. Club meetings will also focus on your project book and speakers from different areas of the horse industry. To find out more about the Horse Club please attend the October 11th interest meeting at 6PM in the outdoor arena at Burton Coliseum. This meeting is required if you wish to join the horse club. Those that miss this meeting will not be allowed to join the horse club this year. Do not bring any horses. Junior Leaders are Bringin it Home to Calcasieu Our Junior Leader Club is gearing up for an exciting new year and would like you to join! Junior Leaders have the opportunity to meet new people from across the parish, be a role model for younger 4-H members and spend a week on the LSU campus competing and making friends. Four-H members who are 13 and over are eligible to become members. The next meeting of the Junior Leadership Club will be held October 4, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. at the 4-H Office. Calcasieu Parish Food and Fitness Board Calcasieu 4-H is introducing a new project area this year! The Food and Fitness Board! While this is not a club, it is an opportunity for members 12 years and older to become a member of a select group of youth who have an interest in food and fitness activities. The board members will not only be responsible for assisting at contest day, but they will also be representing the parish and the 4-H program we have. Please contact Mrs. Carrie know if you have any questions and to receive an application packet! Applications will be due by October 21st!

3 Eat, Sleep, SHOW, Repeat! Livestock Exhibitors! Get Ready For The Spring Shows: Are you planning to show animals at the Parish, District, and State Livestock Shows? Animals to be shown at the parish, district, or LSU shows must be in your possession and under your care before the following dates: Miniature Cattle Nov. 14, 2016 Commercial Heifers and Beef Breeding Nov. 7, 2016 Dairy Commercial Heifers, and Dairy Breeding - Nov. 7, 2016 Market Lambs, Commercial Ewes, and Breeding Sheep Nov. 7, 2016 Market Goats, Commercial Does, and Breeding Goats Nov. 7, 2016 Market Hogs, Commercial Gilts, and Breeding Gilts Dec. 5, 2016 Meat Pen Rabbits Own does by Oct. 15, 2016 Breeding Rabbits Dec. 1, 2016 Anyone planning to show broilers at the parish or LSU show must notify the 4-H office by November 1 so the broiler chicks can be ordered from the hatchery. There will be NO validation days held by the 4-H office this year. Please pick up your validation kits at the 4-H office to validate at home. If you need assistance please contact Mrs. Jennifer Validation fee is $5 per validation. This fee will be collected when exhibitors submit their validation to the Parish Office, and are due by 4:30PM on the final day of Possession All checks should be made out to Calcasieu Parish Livestock Hardship Statement Hardship forms are available in the 4-H office and required when and unforeseen circumstance keeps you from validating your animals, OR if you do not have the means the house your animals on your own property. Hardship forms will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. 4-H Junior Beef Grazing Project The Beef Grazing Project is a way for our youth to be actively involved in the cattle industry. Project members will house a set of 4 calves on two and a half acres of grass. Most of the materials needed for this project are donated! You just need the cattle and the land. You are scored on the daily weight gain among other things. The Calcasieu Parish first place winner will receive a buckle donated by our Calcasieu Cattleman's Association plus recognition at their annual banquet. The state winners (Bulls, Heifers, and Steers) will receive a trophy, belt buckle, and $250 cash award. If you would like further information please contact Jennifer Cantrell at the 4-H office. The deadline to apply is October 15th. Livestock Showmanship Clinic November 19, 2016 Burton Coliseum Livestock Barn If you are looking the brush up your skills and learn new things about your animals this year, then the livestock clinic is your chance! Remember that this clinic will count as part of your premier exhibitor points during the Parish Livestock Show in January. If you have any questions please contact Mrs. Jennifer at the 4-H office!

4 4-H GROWS HERE Show Us What You Got! Contests Start this Month! Participating in 4-H contests is a great way to win awards, meet new people and qualify for district and state activities. In addition, if you are 13 and over by January 1, 2012, participation in at least one parish contest will qualify you to participate in 4-H University to be held in June on the LSU campus. Contest rules will be found each month in the Cloverleaf newsletter and are also available at our parish web site. Pet Show- October 27th - Burton Coliseum Registration: 6:00-6:30 p.m. Show Begins: 6:30 p.m. Each 4-H er can enter only one pet. 1. Categories of pets include dogs, cats, rabbits, fowl, fish, reptiles, any other. It does not include cows, horses, sheep, pigs, or goats. 2. Elementary and junior members will compete separately in categories where 5 or more pets are registered. In categories where less than 5 pets are registered, elementary and junior 4-H ers will compete together. 3. In each category, animals will be judged on characteristics such as best groomed, largest (height), smallest (height), most unusual, longest hair, prettiest eyes, etc. 4. This is a "fun" pet show. It is not necessary to have a registered animal. Grooming and cleanliness are important. Fall Food And Fashion Contest Day - November 5, Burton Coliseum Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.; contests begin at 9:00 a.m. Awards will be presented at 12:00 noon (subject to change). First and second place winners in all divisions of all contests will receive an award of $10 and $5 respectively to be presented at the end-of-the-year recognition program. The "sweepstakes" winner in each category will represent Calcasieu Parish at the area contest held in the spring. All dishes entered in cookery contests must be prepared at home, only 2 servings should be presented at the contest in a throw away container. Each dish must be chilled on ice and brought to the contest in an ice chest. No hot dishes will be allowed. Please bring a copy of the recipe you used with your name, age and 4-H club ON THE BACK. Bring only the dish, recipe and ice chest to the contest. No table decorations (flowers, utensils, placemats etc.) will be allowed! Beef Cookery 1. Each dish must use a minimum of one pound ground beef. 2. Two servings of the dish should be exhibited at the contest. 3. Contestants may enter a total of 2 dishes. Contestant may not enter 2 dishes in the same category. Categories include: Low Calorie Main Dish - a dish which has less than 300 calories per serving. List each ingredient on the recipe and write the number of calories beside each. Then total. Divide the total number of calories by the number of servings. One Dish Meal - a dish that provides food from at least 3 of the 5 main food groups. The amount is not specified, but it should be enough to provide some nutrients. Quick and Easy Main Dish - a dish that takes less than one hour to prepare, including cooking or baking time. List each preparation step separately on the recipe and write the preparation time beside each step, then total the time. Rice Cookery Contest 1. Bring prepared rice dish to the contest. The dish must contain at lease one (1) cup of cooked rice. Wild rice is not a cultivated rice in Louisiana and does not meet the requirement of 1 cup rice. Dishes containing rice products such as rice cereal, rice flour, etc., must also contain cooked rice. 2. Two servings of the dish should be exhibited at the contest. 3. The contest will be divided into two categories. Rice Main Dish - contains significant amounts of beef, poultry or seafood. Rice Side Dish - rice dressing is considered a side dish. Sugar Cookery Contest Please present the entire dish. 1. The recipe must contain at least 1 cup of sugar 2. Creativity and originality are encouraged. Use of previous winning recipes is not allowed. 3. The contest will be divided into 2 categories: Baked- (bread, cakes, pies, cookies, etc.) If any part if the recipe is baked Non-Baked- (candies, icebox pie, ice cream, etc. This does NOT include homemade jam, jelly, preservatives, etc. Seafood Cookery Contest 1. Contestant may enter only one category of the contest and may only enter one dish in that category. Seafood Categories are : Oyster Crab Shrimp Crawfish Fish Other Seafood 2. Each dish must use a minimum of 1 cup of seafood. The seafood must be fresh, frozen, pasteurized, or dried. CANNED SEAFOOD WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED Consumer Food and Consumer Decision Making Contests Contestant will be presented with example problems or situations for which they will have to rank items or products from best to worst choice for that situation. Ready to Wear Contest Contestants will be presented with a set of 4 garments and Full contest rules can be found in the leader guide and on Facebook! will be required to answer a set of questions pertaining to the pieces.

5 Egg, Beef & Rice Ambassador Contests Division I (Grades 4-6) Contestant (a) designs a standard poster 22 x 28 relating to one of the five topics concerning egg, beef, or rice (production, food preparation & nutritive value, food safety, processing, marketing), (b) presents a 2-3 minute explanation of poster subject, and (c) responds to questions from judges. Division II (Grades 7-9) In addition to the requirements for Division I, Division II contestant also prepares an essay not to exceed 500 words or 3 typed pages, double spaced, about the selected subject. Division III-(Grades 10-12) Contestant will present a 5-8 minute illustrated talk concerning egg, beef or rice. (Only egg illustrated talk requires a dish.) Information for ambassador contests can be obtained from the 4- H Office. 1. One table and one easel will be provided. 2. No dish is needed to compete in these contests with the exception of Division III Egg st place winners in each age category of Beef and Egg Ambassador will represent Calcasieu at the state contest in April. Clothing Contests Construction score will be worth 40 points, and appearance score will be worth 60 points, for a total of 100 points possible. All garments need to be modeled with appropriate accessories. Elementary (Grades 4-5) 1. Open to any 4-H member 2. May enter one for the three categories: Apron, Skirt, Shorts & Pants 3. Contestants will be judged on construction and appearance. Garments need to be modeled with appropriate accessories. Junior (Grades 6-8) 1. Open to any 6th grade member. 7th and 8th grade members must be enrolled in the clothing project. 2. Categories include: Skirt and Blouse: any type skirt-no sleeves or collar required on blouse School Dress: may be one piece dress or a jumper and blouse Sportswear: must make a complete outfit. Plants or shorts and blouse- plants/skirt, blouse, and jacket pantsuit-jumpsuit-culottes, etc. 3. Contestants will be judged on construction and appearance. Garments to be modeled with appropriate accessories. Senior (Grades 9-12) 1. Contestants must be enrolled in Clothing Project 2. Contestant may enter all of the following categories but not more than one outfit per category School or casual dress: includes one or two piece dresses suitable for school, sports activities, or casual wear. It does not include floor length dresses, dressy outfits, or pants of any kind. Pants Outfit: includes complete outfits such as pant suits, jump suit, sports wear, or casual wear. Creative Choice: Garments must comprise a complete outfit-any type or number of pieces (but not more can be worn at one time). Outfit must feature 5 or more construction techniques from the following list: 1. Bound button holes 2. Collar or other neckline treatment-other than place, faced edge 3. Creative stitchery 4. Cuffs 5. Design that must be matched 6. Gathers, ruffles, flounces 7. Handmade accessory 8. Lining 9. Pleats or tucks 10. Pockets 11. Sleeves 12. Special seam flat felled, French, lingerie, etc. 13. Tailored collar 14. Trim or decorative detail 15. Underlining 16. Use of unusual fabric 17. Waistband or waistline 18. Work on 2 or more fabrics of different weight or texture 19. Yoke 20. 6 Challenge Camp November 16-18, 2016 Each year the different regions in Louisiana 4-H put on a Challenge Camp designed just for seventh- and eighth-grade 4-H members. Campers have the chance to meet other 4-H ers from our region and learn how to work together on challenging obstacles and projects throughout the week. In the process, you will improve your communication and leadership skills, practice teamwork and make memories to last a lifetime! Challenge camp is $50.00 and registration is due in the 4-H office by October 17, Please call the 4-H Office for registration information.
