This is a teen event designed to build leadership skills and develop members' roles at the district and state level. This is an excellent opportunity to experience a state level 4-H event in a small dose. I would really like to encourage anyone interested in learning more about 4-H in North Carolina and taking that next step in developing their leadership skills to consider attending this event. I will provide transportation for our delegation to attend and we will leave the Rowan County 4-H office at 8:30 am on Saturday November 4. The state deadline for registration is October 9, but the Rowan County deadline is October 3. Youth who are 13 as of January 1, 2017 are eligible to attend. Please contact Mr. Matthew for more information. National 4-H Week National 4-H Week is October 1-7. This week is annually a celebration of all things 4-H and an opportunity for 4-H clubs across the country to show their pride in the greatest youth development program in the world! So I m issuing a challenge to the 4-H clubs of Rowan County...show me your 4-H pride! Send me pictures of your club taking part in National 4-H Week promotion...it can be community service, fellowship, marketing, or whatever...let your imaginations go over to the green side! Submitted pictures will be posted on our 4-H Facebook page and county website and the winning group will determined by the number of likes and reactions garnered. In addition to the recognition on social and print media, the club judged as showing the most 4-H spirit will be given a special club prize $100 to help buy club supplies. So let s all get out there and show our 4-H spirit during National 4-H Week! Enrollment Deadline Enrollment forms must be updated for youth and adult leaders in the 4-H office by November 1, All youth need to have a current membership form, health form, and code of conduct completed and filed with the office; all adult leaders and volunteers need to have a volunteer application, health form, and completed background check within the last two years on file with the 4-H office by this date. Youth and adults may not participate in 4-H events without a current enrollment on file in the office. Maybe you are a long time volunteer and want to see give your input into the direction of the program. Maybe you are a member and want to help guide your 4-H career. PALS is the place for you! PALS is the leaders group for the Rowan County 4-H program. PALS is charged with guiding the 4-H program, planning fundraising activities to help offset costs of programs, and building community within the Rowan County 4-H program. It is essential that as many voices as possible are represented at PALS to ensure that every member and potential member can be reached in an effective manner. If you care about the future of the Rowan County 4-H program, your participation in the advisory process is essential. The next PALS meeting will be on October 12 at 6:00 pm at the Rowan County 4-H office. RACE As PALS functions as an advisory and oversight group for the entire 4-H program, RACE exists to provide guidance and oversight to the horse program here in Rowan County. RACE meetings are open to any member, parent, or leader involved in the Rowan County 4-H Horse program. These meetings set policy and the group plans and implements all of the county wide horse events throughout the year. If you are involved in any way with the 4-H horse program here in Rowan County, please consider attending the next RACE meeting on October 17 at the Rowan County 4-H Office. The meeting begins at 6:00 pm. RACE Fall Open Show The next horse show is the Fall Open Show on October 21 at the Ellis Event Center. This is the final show of the 2017 year so don t miss out! The shows are always a lot of fun and a great way to build your horsemanship and riding skills in a fun environment! The shows are open to all; an d you don t have to be a 4-H member to participate. We are always looking for volunteer help at these shows and if you d like to help make the show a success please sign up at :

3 Junior Leader Club Rowan County 4-H is excited to announce the Jr. Leader Club. This club is for members age 12 (as of January 1, 2017) and older. Jr. Leaders will be a club focused on community service, leadership, and fun. When fully operational, the Jr. Leader club will serve as ambassadors for 4-H in the community and serve as mentors to younger 4-H members. Basically, this is the future leadership of our county s 4-H program. This will also be my primary marketing outlet for district and state activities and a great way to take your 4-H membership to the next level. This year s theme is We Are Rowan and our service learning will deal with giving back to our community. The next meeting of the Rowan Jr. Leader Club will be October 5, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. at the 4-H Office. The November meeting will be on November 2, Please call Mr. Matthew with any questions. 4-H Science Night Another new program, for me anyway, will be 4-H Science Night. On October 3, 2017 at 5:30 pm, come join Rowan County 4-H for a night of STEM exploration and participate in the National 4-H Youth Science Project. Youth will work in teams of 4-5 and design and build wearable fitness trackers! This program will be limited to 30 participants and is open to all youth in Rowan County ages To sign up for 4-H Science Night, please call the Rowan County Extension Office at Winter Food Show The annual Rowan County 4-H Winter Food Show will be on December 2, 2017 at the Rowan County Extension Office. The theme this year is Holiday Foods Around the World. Youth may enter up to two categories: beverage, appetizer, side dish, main dish, and dessert. Youth also need to provide all settings and table decorations for their entry. Entries are due by November 17, 2017 and all entries are electronic; the link for the Food Show entry form can be found below. Winter Food Show Entry Form Club Reporting As was discussed at the August Leaders Training, there is some new information that must be kept up to date with the 4 -H office. Clubs must keep a running 6 month plan of work, member roster, officer roster, and leader contact information. Mr. Matthew has created on-line tools to assist with this. 4 2017 Fall Festival October 14, 2017 A brand new program this year!!! Rowan 4-H invites all members to participate in the 2017 Fall Festival. This will be a fun day of contests, learning, fellowship, and just plain fun! We will have a county Fashion Revue, horticulture judging contest, wildlife habitat judging contest, and pumpkin decorating contest Rowan County Pumpkin Contest RULES 1. Fill out the entry form below on the back page and make sure you select your age group and category. Bring it with you to the 4-H Fall Festival. 2. Pumpkins must be completed at home (individual entries) or at club meetings (club entries) and brought to the 4-H Fall Festival. Pumpkins should be dropped off at the Extension Office BY 8:00 am on October 14, pumpkins will be judged and displayed and results revealed during awards ceremony. 3. Each club should enter the club contest; pumpkins should be designed and completed at a club meeting by the club members H Leaders and parents are encouraged to enter the 4-H adult competition...we can all have fun with this and make it a family affair! 5. Keep your creation to a 15 X15 area. 6. NO pushpins, punctures or carvings are permitted. Pumpkins can be painted; things can be glued on, drawn on, etc. NO CARVING OR CUTTING PUMPKINS AT ALL!!! 7. Judges evaluate entries by how well they embody the theme and fit in age group. It is expected that each entry represents the handiwork of the member entrant. 8. Please do not remove your entry from the display until pick up day ALL pumpkins MUST be picked up on October 20 by 5:00 pm. AGE CATEGORIES (age as of January 1, 2017) 1. Cloverbud Junior Senior H Adult Club Entry PUMPKIN CATEGORIES 1. Creative/Artistic: Let your imagination run wild! A place, thing, generic people, 4-H theme, or anything 4-H appropriate 2. Animal or Creepy Crawly: Any and all critters, Insects, Spiders, etc. NO HUMANS!!! 3. Character: A recognizable name from real life, fiction, culture, history, etc. (i.e. Mickey Mouse) 4. Scary/Spooky: If it makes you shiver or shudder, this is where you put it! 5. CLUB (club entries ONLY): Something representative of your club and its focus Wildlife Habitat Judging 1. 4-Hers may be required to identify the needs of wildlife in a particular kind of habitat and make recommendations on wildlife management practices that will improve the habitat for certain wildlife species. 2. Must be able to identify common wildlife foods and rank them as to their importance for certain wildlife species H ers may be required to identify wildlife animals and birds from photos H ers may be required to identify the different habitats that wildlife live in from aerial photos and rank them as to their importance for wildlife. 5 Fall Festival Cont d Horticulture Identification 1. Judging will consist of 4 classes composed of all vegetables, all fruits, all flowers, all ornamental seeds and plants to be judged on the basis of quality and condition. Frozen, canned, or processed vegetables and fruits may be used. Each class will be placed from top to bottom, from first to fourth place. Cut flowers, potted plants, potted ornamentals, and balled and bur-lapped or bare root nursery stock may be used in the flower and ornamental classes. This entire part will be based on those items of quality and other characteristics that a consumer looks for in buying horticulture crops and products. 2. Written reasons will be given on one class of judging. These will be used to break a tie. 3. Identification Twenty specimens of vegetables, fruits & nuts, flowers, and ornamentals. Plant parts, characteristic of the plant, may be used to represent specimen to be identified. All specimens will be plants easily found in North Carolina. Clothing Contests Elementary (up to age 10) 1. Open to any 4-H member. Cloverbuds (ages 5-8) will be given participation ribbons only. 2. May enter one of the three categories: Apron, Skirt, Shorts & Pants 3. Contestants will be judged on construction and appearance. Garments need to be modeled with appropriate accessories. Junior (Age 11-13) Categories include: Skirt and Blouse - any type skirt - no sleeves or collar required on blouse. School Dress - may be a one piece dress or a jumper and blouse. Sportswear - must make a complete outfit. Examples include: pants (or shorts) and blouse - pants (or skirt), blouse, and jacket - pantsuit - jumpsuit - culottes, etc. Contestants will be judged on construction and appearance. Garments need to be modeled with appropriate accessories. Senior ( Age 14-18) Contestants may enter all of the following categories but not more than one outfit per category: School or Casual Dress - includes one or two piece dresses suitable for school, sports activities or casual wear. It does not include floor length casual clothes, very dressy outfits or pants of any kind. Pants Outfit - includes complete outfits such as pants suits, jumpsuit, short sets, tennis outfits, western clothes, swimwear (must include a cover-up suitable for school), sports or casual wear.
