1 Geary County 4-H News A Newsletter for 4-H Families and Volunteers December 2018 Geary County 4-H Club Day 4-H Club Day will be held February 16, 2019 at the First Presbyterian Church in Junction City. Pre-entry forms are included with this newsletter and are due to the Extension Office by January 28, 2019 at 5:00pm. Event descriptions are also included in this newsletter, so you can be sure to sign up for the category that fits you. 4-H Day is a great way to practice speaking in front of others, practice parliamentary procedure skills, and showcase your talents. Start planning now what you will do for 4-H Day! 4-H Day Resources Central Kansas District 4-H has created a video about preparing and presenting 4-H speeches that may be helpful and can be viewed at Kansas 4-H Communication Fact Sheets and event score sheets are available at h/resources.html and may also be helpful to you as you prepare for 4-H Day. 4-H Day Judging Contests & Awards Ceremony Photography and Family and Consumer Sciences Judging will be two events all 4-H members can participate in at County 4-H Day. A 4-H Day awards ceremony will also be held again this year after all 4-H Day events have taken place. Check out the next 4-H newsletter for more details. Post-Secondary Education Scholarships Applications for 4-H scholarships are due to the County Extension Office by January 28 th at 5:00pm. The state 4-H website will provide a list of state-wide scholarships that are available. The County scholarships that are available this year are the Paul and Clara Gwin Scholarship, the Ralph Dietrich Scholarship, two Ray and Nellie Smith 4-H Scholarships, and the Flint Hills Preservation Coalition Scholarship. You can apply for all of the available scholarships by filling out the Kansas 4-H Scholarship Application packet that can be picked up at the Extension Office. This packet can also be found online at A new application form has been developed, so please do not use any form that does not say 2019 Kansas 4-H Scholarship Application at the top. Pitch Party Fundraiser Join us for a Pitch Party to raise funds for the Geary County 4-H Interstate Exchange Program. The party will be held on Sunday, February 10 th at the 4-H/Senior Citizens Center starting at 5:00pm. Check out the flyer included in this newsletter for more information. A limited number of spots for this fun event are available, so sign up ASAP!

2 4-H Enrollment Online 4-H enrollment for the year should have been completed by now. If you have not taken care of this, please do so as soon as possible. This will ensure that you continue to receive newsletters and project information. Find more information about enrolling online at h/forms.html. Enrollment Deadline The Geary County 4-H Foundation has set an enrollment deadline of January 1 st in order to receive any funding from the foundation for the current 4-H year. Please make sure 4-H members are enrolled by January 1 st in order to receive any event scholarship funds (including 4-H Camp) and/or post-secondary education scholarships made available by the foundation. 4-H Day with Wildcat Women s Basketball This fun 11 th annual event will be held on Sunday, January 13 th at Noon for the K-State vs. KU Women s Basketball game. Tickets are $22 each and include a ticket to the game, a t-shirt, and a $10 meal voucher that can be used at the main concession stands at the game. A flyer with all of the details for the event, including the online registration link, is posted at Registration deadline is December 20 th. Northeast 4-H Leadership Event Come see what leadership is like Sky High! The Northeast Area 4-H Leadership Event is designed for future and present day leaders to build their leadership skills. The event is open to youth 12 to 18 years old and will be held January 19 th from 9:30am to 4:30pm at Rock Springs 4-H Center. The fee is $30, but the Geary County 4-H Foundation will pay half of this fee for Geary County 4-H members who complete a scholarship request form that is available at the Extension Office or at If you are interested, you can find more information and register at (click on the green 4-H Event Registration button) or contact the Extension Office. Deadline for registration is January 3 rd. If you re looking for a one-day leadership experience with new friends, leadership skills, and great ideas to take back to your club then you should plan to attend! Citizenship in Action Would you like to have more influence in laws and rules that affect your life? Then you ll want to attend Kansas 4-H Citizenship in Action! This two-day event will be held Sunday, February 17 th through Monday, February 18 th, 2019 in Topeka. All youth who are at least 13 years old are eligible to attend. The purpose of this event is for Kansas 4-H members to learn how the state legislative process works and how their voice and participation in decisionmaking can make a difference in their communities. Registration is due by February 1 st. The fee is $175, but the Geary County 4-H Foundation will pay half of this fee for Geary County 4-H members who complete a scholarship request form that is available at the Extension Office or at If you are interested, you can find more information and register at or contact the Extension Office.

3 Beef Weigh-in Weigh-in will be held on Sunday, February 24 th from 2:00 to 3:00pm. We will be weighing and tagging beef cattle. Please bring $3.00 for each tag that you will need. KJLS & KSF Livestock Nominations The 4-H livestock nomination process for 2019 for the Kansas State Fair and Kansas Junior Livestock Show has not been completely decided at this time, but will be coming out soon. DNA will continue to be required in Forms will be available at the Extension Office. ALL exhibitors will be required to complete Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) certification to be eligible for either show in Chuck will be scheduling an in-person training to complete this certification. Look for more information coming out soon. Nomination deadlines as far as we know are as follows (if changes are made, they will be posted in future 4-H Newsletters): Market Steers and Market Heifers May 1 Commercial (Crossbred) Heifers June 15 Registered Breeding Heifers nomination not required, but registration papers must be in exhibitor s name by June 15 Market Lambs June 15 Commercial Ewes (Wether Dams) June 15 Registered Breeding Ewes nomination not required, but registration papers must be in exhibitor s name by June 15 KSF Market Hogs/KJLS Barrows June 15 Purebred Breeding Gilts nomination not required, but registration papers must be in exhibitor s name by June 15 KSF Commercial Breeding Gilts June 15 Meat Goats June 15 Horse Panorama This event is designed for youth to learn more about equine science and will be held at Rock Springs 4-H Center January 25 th through 27 th. Further details on the Panorama are available at the Extension Office or on the web at Online entry is due and checks must be postmarked by January 15 th. Horse Level Testing Now is a great time to get started on your horse Achievement Level testing if you haven t already done so. All District Horse Show participants will need to have completed the appropriate level testing by June 1 st (9-13 year olds Level 1, 14 and up Level 1 and 2). In order to participate in the 4-H horse show at the Kansas State Fair, 4-H members must qualify at the District Horse Show scheduled for July 1 st in Salina. Upcoming Youth Livestock Events at K-State The K-State Youth Livestock Program has some exciting events planned for the upcoming months. Mark them on your calendar now and plan to attend! Junior Swine Producer Day March 9 (early registration due February 15) Junior Meat Goat Producer Day March 30 (early registration due March 11) More information on these events can be obtained at the Extension Office or online at The K-State Youth Livestock Program has Twitter and Facebook accounts to keep everyone updated on information and deadlines. 4 Change to Fair Auction Participation Requirements for H members will be required to attend at least 4 regular monthly meetings of the 4-H club in which they are enrolled between October 1 and June 30 to participate in the project/livestock auction held at the end of the fair in Official record of meetings attended will be the club secretary s book. This requirement does not limit fair participation, only participation in the auction. The decision to make this change was made by the Fair Board after much discussion and consideration, and on recommendation to make a change from the 4-H Council. Notification was sent out via hard copy mail and along with being printed in the newsletter so families can plan ahead now to make sure they meet the requirement if youth want to participate in the auction. Northeast Kansas 4-H Judge Training This training for adults interested in becoming fair judges will be held in Oskaloosa on December 27 th from 5:30-8:00pm. Participants will attend a general session followed by project-specific breakouts. Projects to choose from include foods, yeast breads, table settings, fiber arts (specifically quilting), plant science, and woodworking. RSVP by December 20 th. We will discontinue use of the fair account and use the general 4-H account for all 4-H reminders, including fair related information. 9 Geary County 4 H Day 2019 Entry Materials Geary County 4 H Day will be held on February 16 th. Now is the time to start thinking about which events you would like to participate in at 4 H Day. The following are some descriptions of the events and some hints that will help you prepare. Also included is the entry form which is due to the Extension Office by January 28, If your entry form is not turned in by this time, you will not be included on the schedule. Remember that juniors are 7 to 12 years old as of January 1, 2019 and seniors are 13 and over as of January 1, All activities are judged and placed in a blue, red, or white ribbon category with a purple ribbon awarded to those most deserving at the end of the day in each 4 H Day activity, except Cloverbud 4 H entries and the Show and Tell category. All Cloverbud 4 Her s and those who participate in Show and Tell will receive a participation ribbon for their talks or talent numbers. (Although participation will not be competition judged, judges comments will be given.) PowerPoint can only be used for Project Talks and Demonstrations. 4 H Day is a good time to develop self confidence and poise. It s an opportunity to perform in front of others and share your 4 H experiences and talents. I hope every one of you will find something that interests you and will get involved in this activity! Parliamentary Procedure Contests Gavel Games A parliamentary procedure demonstration t Junior and Senior Divisions t 4 members per team plus an at large member (optional) t 20 minute maximum time limit t Senior team members will draw for the office of president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, member (if a 5 person team); Junior team members can pre assign officer positions t Each team will be required to do a certain number of specific motions t One junior and one senior team may be selected for Regional 4 H Day Model Meetings Shows example of a complete business meeting 35 minute maximum time limit (time will not include roll call) An agenda of the model meeting must be presented to the judge before the meeting is called to order. The judge will deduct one ribbon placing if the agenda is not made available. The secretary will be asked to turn in notes after the model meeting. No officer s books are required. (Up to date Secretary s book is required for Regional 4 H Day.) Recreation may be at any time during the meeting. (Recreation is not allowed at Regional 4 H Day.) Leaders should participate in the meeting as they normally do. Advice and counsel will be in order and may include announcements and reports. Each club will draw one parliamentary procedure problem to incorporate into their model meeting. The problems you will draw from are: Division of the house Division of the question Lay a motion on the table Take a motion from the table Previous question One entry may be selected for Regional 4 H Day

10 Public Speaking Project Talk A speech telling about a project in which you are currently enrolled. This speech may include your experiences and/or information relating to the project as well as promotion of the project. The purpose is to inform. o For 4 H members 7 to 12 years old o Time recommended: 3 to 4 minutes, 7 minutes maximum o Visuals are encouraged, but are not required o PowerPoint is allowed in this category. A Windows compatible computer and projector will be provided if requested by the entry deadline. Presentations should be brought on a jump drive. Also bring two hard copies of the presentation in case of technical difficulties. No internet access will be provided. o No questions are asked o A project talk includes three parts: Introduction The opening statement and attention getter Body The main part of the talk. Tell the main idea of your talk, then explain or illustrate important facts in developing the main idea Conclusion/Summary Repeat a few of the major points of your talk. o Two entries may be selected for Regional 4 H Day Demonstrations and Illustrated Talks A demonstration is showing and telling how to do something. An illustrated talk is just telling how to do something. Junior Division for 4 H members 7 to 12 years old; Time recommended: 4 to 7 minutes, 10 minutes maximum Senior Division for 4 H members 13 years and older; Time recommended 5 to 10 minutes, 15 minutes maximum Questions are asked A summary that reviews important points is required as part of the speech Should begin with a catchy introduction Either individual or team presentations The topic may be related to a project in which the 4 Her is currently enrolled The endorsement of brand names is discouraged All necessary equipment is provided by the 4 Her PowerPoint is allowed for both age divisions in this category. No set changes allowed. k No number limitations on participants k 45 minutes maximum time limit k 5 minutes will be allowed to set the stage before the play k Club is responsible for all scenery k Script must be turned in to judge before performance or judge will deduct one ribbon placing k 4 Hers should be in charge of stage arrangements including pulling the curtain and setting the stage k Introduction is important and is not included in time allowed k One entry may be selected for Regional 4 H Day Skits No number limitations on participants 15 minute maximum time limit Script must be turned in to judge before performance or judge will deduct one ribbon placing Introduction is important and is not included in time allowed Participants will be responsible for their own scenery, property, and props One entry may be selected for Regional 4 H Day Reading Junior and Senior Poetry interpretation or prose interpretation Dramatic, interpretive, humorous, or other type of reading Individual presentation only 10 minute maximum time limit Have an attention getting introduction that includes title and author, which also sets the scene for your piece A folder or book must be used as a prop, no other props may be used May be memorized, but needs to look as though it were a reading, otherwise it would be solo acting One junior and one senior may be selected for Regional 4 H Day Solo Acting Junior and Senior Must be memorized or judge will deduct one ribbon placing The material is generally something that was published as a script, but can be done from a story. The pieces may be single or multiple characters (one person does all the parts). 14 Fundraiser for the Geary County 4-H Interstate Exchange Program 10 Point Pitch Sunday, February 10 th 4 H/Senior Citizens Center (1025 S. Spring Valley Road, Junction City) 5:00 6:00pm Round 1 6:00 6:15pm Snack Time (bring your favorite finger food to share, drinks will be provided) 6:15 7:15pm Round 2 No age restrictions on players. A movie will be shown in the dining room for youth who aren t playing. Don t forget to bring some cash for the 50/50 raffle. We will be selling raffle tickets for $1 each or 12 for $10. The proceeds made through the raffle will be split evenly between the raffle winner and the 4-H Interstate Exchange program. $50 PRIZE For winning team of Round 1 and Round 2! Cost: $20 per person. Fees will be collected at the door. A limited number of spots are available, so pre enter today by calling the Extension Office at or ing gkopfer@ksu.edu. Teams of two or singles can enter. Singles will be paired with a partner through random drawing. 4 H Interstate Exchange programs are a series of learning experiences in which individuals from the county visit in the homes of 4 H members in another geographical area, and are visited by them in return. This results in many benefits to 4 H members and their families.
